However, to echo others comments, no a/c, at least not in the rooms. While window opened, it was not really enough to get a breeze. Fan was helpful. Thankful that we were not there in hot weather. Shower had mold/mildew on grout. Bed was not up to Marriott standards. One of the few hotels I have seen that provides a handicapped refuge in emergent situations - high kudos on that. Collapse

The hotel is in the Old Town and very walkable to the train station, Royal Mile etc. The easiest way from Waverly Station is to head across the North Bridge, pass High Street (Royal Mile) and continue to Chamber Street. Right on Chambers (dead ends at Greyfriars Bobby), turn left and take right fork (Forrest Rd) and keep going, cross a main street and it turns into a walking/bike path. Turn right at the stores and the hotel is in the third building. Sounds like a lot but it's a 10-15 walk even for slower walkers. The room - very spacious with king bed, 2 night stands with drawers, good bedside lighting, safe, TV, desk & chair, pullout couch, easy chair with pullover writing table, lots of light. Very clean and very modern. The shower is large and roomy. The kitchen area, which is the entry hall, has a microwave, dish washer, refrig, sink, lots of dishes and cooking materials. The buffet breakfast is excellent - eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, whole and cut up fruit, yoghurt, cereals, pastries, juices and lots more - even haggis, I think. The service is excellent. Judy is especially helpful. There is a small bookshelf with books written in several languages besides English for guests to borrow (and probably donate their recently read book). There also are complementary washing machines and dryers behind the reception desk as well as soap. I'd consider the room fairly expensive for one person but you do get a lot and the location is good - right in the middle of lots of University students. Collapse

This hotel is about 15 minutes walk to Royal Mile, and is in a quiet location, except that there is construction right across and workers start at 7 am. Wifi was great, although it was not working for 2 days but got fixed. Room was spacious with a kitchenette, small fridge with no freezer and microwave. Also tea kettle and tea. Breakfast buffet has plenty of options including fruits, cereals, yogurt, eggs and more. There are small boxes for take away in case you have to leave. It is usually busy around 8:30 am. Staff was very attentive and helpful. Parking is £12 a night, make sure to get your ticket validated at front desk. Parking is right next to hotel and is owned by a private company. Sometimes the validation doesn't go through when you pay at the machine so just press button for assistance. Keep in mind that you might not be able to use your credit card unless you have a PIN number. I did find very helpful that if your key does not work you can call front desk from phone by elevator and they will assist you. There are 2 washers and 2 dryers, soap provided, however drying cycle is very long, it could take up to 3 hours to dry. I did wash at 1 am since it was very busy during the day. There are a couple of coffee shops nearby that are very good, also Starbucks and a grocery store. Overall an enjoyable stay. Collapse

I always choose Marriott hotels when I have the option when traveling for work or pleasure because of the consistent, excellent experience. I've stayed over 150 nights at Marriott hotels. I was excited to find a Residence Inn in Scotland for my vacation! Unfortunately, we were not met with the consistent experience that I had become accustomed to at my past Marriott stays! First of all, I used the "mobile check in" option and our room was not ready at the normal check in time because the hotel was "too busy". When we finally were able to get into our room, we were extremely shocked and disappointed to learn that there was NO AIR CONDITIONING, and the only window was a small one that opened only about 6 inches. "Don't worry", we were told, "you have fans!" The fans provided were coated in dust (see photos). Next, I looked at the beds...six of the pillows had stains on them...very noticeable stains! The couch in the room was also worn and stained, as were all of the decorative pillows on it! The safe in the room had holes drilled in it with no lock, with a note stating "it was not in working order". We finally settled into our room, trying to adjust to not having air conditioning. The house keeper came to change the dirty pillow cases and stated, "it is the laundry company we are using, they are clean, but still have some stains on them!" The next thing that occurred was the Wi-Fi was not working on Saturday. We called the front desk and they said, "we know it is not working and it won't be fixed until sometime on Monday!!" It still was not working when we checked out on Monday afternoon...three days without Wi-Fi !! Because of this we could not check in for our flights or print our boarding passes, which in turn cost us $150.00 for the airline to do this at the airport!! This really soured our vacation experience in Scotland. The breakfast provided was good, and the lobby was nice, but the location was not within walking distance to the touristy areas. It was a 10-15 minute Uber ride away. The hotel staff was very professional and tried to handle the issues mentioned above as best as they could. This hotel is NOT Marriott quality/consistency. I do not recommend staying here despite the accommodating and understanding staff. Collapse
