My family just spent 5 nights at the Residence Inn in Edinburgh. Overall we had a good stay and I would stay again. For full disclosure we were not originally planning to stay there, but at another Marriott property. However, there was a problem that required us to change hotels a week before the stay. I had read reviews on multiple sites and everything was the same. No AC is a problem. My TA research helped me know to request a corner room where there is a larger window and another one in the bathroom. With temperatures reaching into the mid 70s, I never felt uncomfortable (and I am used to air conditioning any time the temp gets close to 70). I read it was impossible to have the curtain drawn and door open. Not true!! We closed the curtains but cool air at night still came in. The fan spread the cool air effectively. I can see how the smaller rooms with only one small window could be stuffy, but Edinburgh weather is cool enough most of the year to only make that an issue during summer. That out of the way, there are many more positive things to say about this hotel. The towels were big and thick. The kitchen was very helpful for keeping a morning Diet Coke and evening wine chilled. We washed 3 loads of laundry which was awesome for a 12 day trip with a 10 year old boy who gets his clothes dirty. A guest who had been at the hotel for a month have me helpful hints. Otherwise a load can take multiple hours to complete. There aren't many instructions but make sure to empty the water basin of the drier or your clothes won't dry (top left of drier). One of the biggest pluses of the hotel was that we could accommodate our family of 3 in a larger Queen studio. It was a very spacious room. Breakfast was plentiful. We never had a problem getting a seat. It is a real plus that it is included in the basic room rate. Collapse

The Residence Inn Edinburgh is right in the heart of old town. They provided the high quality service that is expected at any Marriott property. We never needed to use any public transportation to get to all the sights around town. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and even assisted in booking us a taxi to take our family of 7 on a day trip to St. Andrews. The breakfast provided each morning was really good with lots of choices. I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Edinburgh on business or pleasure. Collapse
Great area to stay in but I think maybe not a 4 star hotel

The hotel is located in a great location for the university (especially graduation at McEwan Hall next door) and for the city centre and not far from the train station. Right beside a lovely park area too. Plenty of shops and cafes nearby. We had a queen bed suite which was big enough for us but it was an upgrade so the one bed studio may be quite small. The staff are pleasant and helpful.Free Wi-Fi . Breakfast was included and was fine but nothing special, and the seating area is slightly cramped. There are some downsides . The bed moved on its wheels if you sat up, which is annoying and the building seems to have been built without air-conditioning , which is strange for a modern glass building. The corridors were sweltering , as was our room. We did not sleep well at all. There was a small electric fan provided . The hotel is part of a huge new development ,so there is building work which looks as if it will go on for years and there is some noise if you open the window , which we had to do. It is fine for a stay of a day or two. Collapse

Four of us stayed here following a fantastic meal at Tom Kitchens in Leith. The hotel is in a perfect location with bars and restaurants within easy walking distance and everywhere else a short walk or taxi journey away. The rooms are spotless, well equipped with large comfy beds and all you need for a short break away. I could not recommend highly enough. The staff could not be more pleasant. Collapse

The Residence Inn is situated in the University area, high above the city. It's an area with extensive rebuilding going on and I found it very difficult to find. I felt it was too far to go out again after a day's sightseeing, so was very relieved to see the room had been kitted out with a microwave, a fridge and cutlery. The room is more like a mini apartment. It's all very modern, but doesn't quite hit the spot. My room was large and airy, but the bed moved on its wheels constantly as soon as I sat or lay in it. I had to wedge the bed against the chair and the side shelf. The bathroom was awful. Well, the shower was nice, but the grout was mouldy and the paint was peeling off the walls where it was getting constantly wet. Breakfast is a buffet, horrid sausages but nice little scotch eggs. It's served in the bar area which is featureless and cramped, like a railway cafe. The hotel is just around the corner from Starbucks and Sainsbury's, so you can easily get supplies. To conclude; this hotel has great promise, but misses the glossy quality of so many modern hotels. The workmanship in the bathroom was shoddy and cheap and it's starting to show. Furthermore, in my opinion the location is poor if you want to be near the centre, and it's an uphill climb all the way to the Quartermile. The area is dead as the students have all left for the summer. It would actually be a great hotel if your daughter or son was at Uni there, as it's so close. They need a few tweaks though! Collapse
