The view from the hotel was beautiful, the outdoor pool nice and cool - specially for this hot summer days. I got an upgrade being a Marriott platinum member, which was really nice. The staff was very helpful all the time - even if there were a lot of communication problems, since they mostly only understand/speak Italian. The BAD part about this hotel is the restaurant. - if you can, AVOID the restaurant. The food is overpriced, the wine is overpriced, and the service is really bad. You have to make a reservation, even if the restaurant is half empty. The breakfast is also HORRIBLE. The eggs are form a box, the orange juice tastes like chemical, the bread is old. There are enough delicious restaurants in Barga, with very reasonable prices. Do not fall for the "trap" of staying dinning here just for the view. Collapse

I stayed at the Renaissance Il Ciocco the last weekend of July to celebrate my first year anniversary! The road to arrive to the resort is really funny and you are dived into the wild Tuscany! Also working in a 5 stars hotel, I have to say that the service was up to such an hotel! We have been welcomed at the front desk and the check in was spotless and very smooth, the receptionist (don't remember his name, but please say thank you again from our side!) greeted us and wished us a happy anniversary! The room was on the 5th floor and then from there on the 3rd floor. The room was cozy and very neat, super clean and really comfortable! We had a balcony and the view from the room was STUNNING! After 15 minutes we received a cupcake as little welcome gift for our anniversary! We used the SPA facilities and spent some time at the swimming pool, had a coffee there and enjoyed our time, as well the day after! Francesco advised us for some options for dinner, in couple of different little towns around there! We went to Scacciaguai and Francesco was really right about the restaurant! Thank you Francesco! The day of departure we had an AMAZING buffet American Breakfast on the terrace restaurant and it was really worth it! Giulio C. Checked us out with the assistance of a trainee! Both of them have been super kind and very funny and the check out was smooth and without any inconvenience! Il Ciocco is the best place to stay in the Garfagnana area and we will definitively be back very soon! :) Collapse
A Sad Day for Marriott, Especially Platinum Members

Where to start... If you enjoy a 40 minute check in process with a Dragon Lady Manager, and no, not the beautiful Daenerys Targaryen Queen of Dragons from Game of Thrones, but a fire-breathing manager that made the process hell after traveling all day, then this is your place. The process was one of complete disrespect, horrible acknowledgement of a Platinum guest (PAYING FOR A ROOM, and not on POINTS), and bleeding us for every Euro - it started my Tuscany trip off very badly. Unlike the U.S., when Italians ask for the EXACT number of people in a room, it so they can charge you for every person in the room, even though it is a room with two single beds (again unlike the U.S.) where they give you 2x queens and 3 people are easily accommodated. She proceeded to charge us 30E/day for a cot, because the hotel will not accommodate my 7 year old son and the rooms here are horribly small. Again, a simple money-grab and no accommodation for Platinum guests. The she-devil Manager stated I was emailed the details, but somehow they were emailing my wife, even though my wife's email IS NOT associated with my Platinum profile... Let's go to the hotel amenities. The food is AWFUL, EXPENSIVE (for no reason), and the restaurant services is rude. The check-in associates plainly stated that the hotel REQUIRED breakfast reservations, when in-fact, the restaurant was almost empty (all week) while we dined during breakfast. It caused us to rise extra early on vacation so we could enjoy the Platinum amenities. The restaurant manager was also abrasive and rude with other guests. Unwilling to clean tables to offer guests a better dining experience with a view, and finally people just cleaned and arranged their own tables to get what they want. The lone bright spot was a sweet girl that managed the check-in desk during breakfast. Always polite and happy to greet us with a smile. The bar dining is also terrible. Again, expensive, minimal menu and mostly fried. It was nearly inedible. Plus the girls waiting the tables were among the slowest encountered anywhere in all of Italy. The outdoor pool closes at 7:30 p.m., the rules are ridiculous and because of its close proximity to the restaurant, requires it to close ridiculously early. I also would be shocked to know that the pool was kept at close to 80 degrees. As a pool owner myself, this is ridiculously cold for a mountain resort. The indoor pool was a welcome respite, given there was a private sun-bathing lounge, the pool was at 92 degrees and it was mostly unoccupied. Again, VERY strict rules, no children policies during set hours etc. Overall, the hotel is in a sad state of repair. It poorly reflects on the Marriott standards of other International Renaissance-level properties. Peeling paint, water damage, broken down amenities etc. The beautiful lobby, courtyard, and other areas of the hotel do not make up for the disrepair of the rooms (poorly draining sink and showers), sagging mattresses, etc. and other communal areas. The check-out process, normally a non-issue in the rest of the free world, was again, over-complicated and made a complete mess. We were leaving VERY early, and the desk clerk informed me there was a problem with my credit card. That cause me to call my bank, ask for assistance back in the U.S., confirm that the card was in order etc. THERE WAS NO ISSUE with my card. It was a desk clerk issue and a lack of training. It delayed our check-our by another 15-20 min. Besides a beautiful view, excellent proximity to Barga (a Tuscan gem), and having some great local restaurants in the immediate vicinity, this property exists to rip-off other European travelers, not use to the exception service and amenities enjoyed world-wide at other Renaissance properties. Spend your money at other Air B&Bs, Private villas etc. You will be best served to avoid this property. Collapse

Awesome views from our room (ask for a high level floor), the pool, and the outdoor terraces. Having dinner with such views truly enhances the experience! Service for the most part was excellent except for the very long wait to have a cocktail on the terrace above the pool. Front desk was very helpful in guiding us for visits in the area - especially our visit to Lucca. Have the front desk make a reservation for a meal in Lucca at Buca di Sant'Antonio! Collapse
