Nice place to stay. Great location for shopping ! Could use more amenities. No shop for sundry items and restaurant will be closed until the middle of 2018. Staff very nice and accommodating. The smallest bathroom sinkI have ever seen in a hotel.

Let me preface this review by saying I wanted to stay somewhere a little "different" than our typical Marriott/Courtyard/Residence Inn type of visit. I searched Marriott brand hotels only as we are Platinum Elite members so we are loyal to Marriott brand hotels. The Renaissance 57 was certainly not the cheapest option, or the most centrally convenient choice given our touristy itinerary but it appeared unique from the website photos so I opted to pay a little more for the memorable experience. I am admitting that a portion of our not so great experience is my fault. Upon check-in we were told that hotel was at full capacity so there was no upgrade available. Not a big deal but as we absorbed the weirdness of the hotel, I immediately regretted my decision to stay someplace "different." This place is truly very weird. From the super dark entrance, to the "take the elevator up ONE floor, walk across the hall and wait for another elevator to go up another two whole floors," to the yucky weird carpet, and the halls so narrow to our room that I had to pull my bag BEHIND me, not beside me; this place was really bizarre. Even the elevator call buttons looked like some creepy Alice in Wonderland creature things. It was just outside of my comfort zone. Our room was disappointingly spartan. Very basic and lacking anything other than the most basic amenities. We were told that the restaurant was being remodeled but we were not told that the rooftop was closed for renovation so that was a real bummer. We also noted that other floors appeared nicer than the third floor, where our room was, so perhaps the rest of the hotel is nicer than the third floor? It's possible. The real disappointment came on day two when we arrived back to our room at 1 am (after being gone all day) to find that our room hadn't been cleaned leaving us with no fresh towels, no coffee for the morning, and no fresh products. I called the front desk and an associate arrived immediately with fresh towels, coffee, and products but in the meantime, we had discovered that there were hair pins all over the carpet that we hadn't noticed the night before. Clearly, not only was our room not cleaned on our second day, it had not been vacuumed before we arrived. That's just GROSS. Upon checkout, I informed the desk clerk that I was very disappointed that our room hadn't been cleaned and even more unhappy that it hadn't been vacuumed BEFORE WE ARRIVED. He told me he would have Catherine, the manager, contact me to discuss. Catherine called me almost immediately and was most apologetic. She said that had I spoken to her the night before, she would have moved us to another room. I truly appreciate how responsive she was and that she would have corrected the issue had I contacted her sooner but, I really don't think we wanted to change rooms at 1 am. So again, I'll share part of the blame for our less than great stay. I will say this... all of the staff was extremely friendly and I am very impressed with Catherine's speedy response to my complaint and genuine willingness to correct the issue. That being said, do your homework before booking a room here. Read the reviews and ask yourself if you like dark, weird, places with no restaurant and no rooftop and paying more money than you could book a Courtyard down the road. If that sounds appealing to you - go for it because the staff and management are really nice - but this place just wasn't for me. Collapse

The Renaissance 57 is a convenient locale for all of mid-town Manhattan. The hotel has a boutique feel but is beginning to show its age. The elevators are slow and a bit creaky. There are only three, counting the service elevator and one can wait for up to 10 minutes at busy times of the day. The hotel restaurant currently is closed for renovations which is no hardship given the plethora of restaurants in easy walking distance. The M-Club has a light breakfast option and hors d'overes in the evening. The rooms are small but comfortable with a European feel. My room lacked a club chair or divan, but others have extra seating. The desk has ample electrical outlets and USB charging ports but none for foreign connections. Collapse

Upon arrival you are greeted with a standard (but small) reception area. Up one flight of stairs is the lobby - both are fairly fancy but quite dark with their interior. You are told at check-in that this is a 'budget hotel' - why they feel the need to tell you that is beyond me - maybe to pre warn you to not get your expectations up once you see your room?! We were given a standard room, and it is exactly that, very standard, and dark. Everything was wood - a wooden side board that housed the air-con unit - a full wall of wooden panels, mingled in with a wooden wardrobe...it definitely felt like you were stuck in the 90's, BUT, it did its job. The red carpet looked old and I was glad I bought my travel slippers with me because I wasn't too keen on walking on it bare foot. Space wise, there were 2 of us and we struggled. I wouldn't suggest booking a standard room if you have more than 1 suitcase each. 1 of ours had to go in the wardrobe, and the other just by the door. If one person opened the wardrobe door, the other person couldn't get passed to the other side of the bedroom. It got rather annoying! However! The bathroom was lovely and spacious, and both modern and clean. It had both a bath and a nice powerful shower. Complimentary Aveda products were provided and lots of large towels. Internet is NOT free here (I learnt the hard way). You have to go to the lobby if you want to use their free Wi-Fi. There isn't an on-site restaurant here however there is a gym that is free of charge. Area wise, if you want to spend a lot of time in Central Park, this maybe for you. If you want to be in the hustle and bustle of Times Square then you're looking at a 25ish minute walk. It wouldn't be my first pick of hotels (this came in a package) but if push came to shove I wouldn't object staying here again. Collapse
