We came to Manchester for a few days after a hectic week in London and were happy to find out that there was a free tram from the train station that stopped half a block from the hotel. However, the first impression of the hotel was definitely unfavorable. The exterior is the ugliest, grungiest, gray cement block behemoth I've ever seen; reminded me of the Communist era Soviet bloc tenement buildings. Once you entered through a tiny lobby door, it just confirmed my fears. The lobby is so minuscule it's almost non-existent. The website pictures of spacious sitting areas in the lobby are actually just that, photographs!! Photographs of bookshelves and furniture plastered on the walls to deceive people into thinking the space is bigger than it is. There was no bellhop in sight. You cannot roll your luggage to the elevators either because there are several steps you have to maneuver. As a Platinum Marriott Elite, I was upgraded to a large room which had thankfully had some renovations done but the bathroom was so tiny you had to close the door to be able to get to the toilet and tub. The hotel is located around a lively area of bars and restaurants, which is why you will see multiple reviews from UK country residents who are weekenders coming into the "big city" for their jollies. This is NOT a hotel befitting the international standards of the Renaissance brand name. I would not come here again for sure. The only reason for the second star was the gracious servers at the breakfast buffet, which on a Sunday morning before all the overnight revelers went back to their regular lives, was a complete, utter madhouse. Lastly, make sure to check your hotel bill against the currency exchange rates. The hotel added another 7 pounds surreptitiously to my bill after check-out. Good thing I had the print-out of my folio to dispute the extra charges with my credit card. Collapse

This 4 star hotel is located in the city centre. Although a perfect location, this hotel is out dated and needs a lot of refurbishment. Bar is ok, breakfast is not what you expect from a 4 star hotel. Rooms are spacious although old fashioned, especially the bathroom! Mattress is ok. TV, although flatscreen, has signal of bad quality and has almost exclusively English channels. Disappointing for such an 'international' hotel. Collapse

We were pleased with this hotel during a recent Saturday night stay. The Marriott Renaissance is a 5 minute walk away from the Victoria train station and a 5 minute cab ride away from the Piccadilly train station. The room was clean and quiet and the king size bed was exceptionally comfortable. Breakfast was a typical buffet style English Breakfast. Collapse

I attended the hotel with my wife, who was attending a training day in the hotel's function rooms. Before attending, we tried to phone ahead to enquire about the details regarding parking. This turned into a bit of a nightmare as there was no direct number for the hotel and we were transferred to an American call centre where the call taker didn't appear to know where the UK never mind the car parking facilities at our desired hotel! We gave up and travelled anyway. Upon our arrival, the roads outside were busy and so we assumed that the parking was in the NCP car park directly next to the hotel. It wasn't until we had parked and walked out of the car park that we then noticed the sign outside stating that this wasn't the hotel car park!! As it turns out, it is actually the same car park but the entrance is on the other side of the building and gives access to a separated section with keycode access. The price for 24 hours was only £4 difference so we just left our car where it was. I'd definitely park in the proper car park if I visited again though. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who, after booking us in, then gave us some great tips on local places to eat and provided us with an annotated map to help us around the city centre. Our room was on the 13th floor (unlucky for some) and was relatively close to the lifts and stairs. Ours was a nice big room with a king size bed, a lounge area and lovely bathroom. The lounge area had a small chaise, a relaxing chair, small coffee table, a desk with chair. We eventually found the small fridge hidden in the wardrobe and an ice bucket in the cupboard under the TV. The room also had a Nespresso machine with a choice of capsules and a couple of bottles of water in the fridge. The bathroom was clean, fresh and had all of the toiletries that you'd be likely to forget! There were also slippers in the wardrobe. The views from the windows weren't exactly awe inspiring but then again it is the city centre so you can't expect much. the hotel is ideally located for shopping in the centre or visiting the many museums or the theatre. All are a short walk from the front door of the hotel. there are plenty of places to eat but if you're after a light bite, the small pizzeria next to the hotel is a family run business who make fresh pizzas to order and they're delicious. We had breakfast in the hotel in the morning and, to be honest, I wasn't impressed at all. It was the only real issue I had whilst staying at this hotel, hence only 4 stars. I expected quality in such a beautiful hotel but I'd have had better at the local Wetherspoons. All in all though, it was a great hotel and, if I was to stay in Manchester again, I'd definitely have this hotel at the top of my list. Collapse
