Perfect location in town, at the top where all the nightlife is. Free parking is worth a lot in town. The staff were surprisingly friendly and helpful (for a southern town). The breakfast was good and well priced. The hotel is a mix of modern, and worn. Most importantly it was clean. The room was well furnished but I didn't find any extra pillows and was reluctant to ask for one at 2am when we got in. Maybe I should have used the phone. The bed was comfortable. Nice selection of drinks in the hospitality tray including decaff coffee. The bathroom was adequate. The water supply was slow but adequate and it could have done with an extractor as there was no window. Sleeping in a street facing room would have been a problem before 3am Sunday morning as the street was nice and busy. The sash window was broken and didn't work very well. However, it doesn't suffer motorway or ring road noise like many other areas in Basingstoke so is very quiet at night apart from the pub noise. Overall pleasantly surprised considering the size and location. Collapse

We spent an enjoyable three nights at The Red Lion. We used it as a base to visit the Bombay Sapphire Distillery and the “Milestones” museum. What’s good? It is in a superb location just a few minutes stroll to Festival Place shopping centre. There is ample free parking and the front of the hotel leads onto the old part of the town and the market square. Our room was clean and tidy but a little on the small side for three nights. We noticed that larger rooms were available and we would have paid to upgrade had we known. There is free Wi-Fi (though you have to obtain a new code every 24 hours which is a bit of a bind). We had a blown light-bulb in our room and reported it to reception. It was fixed within five minutes! A full buffet breakfast is available. The food is good. As well as breakfast each day we had one evening meal in the restaurant. The food was superb. We had fillet steak which was delicious and rump of lamb which was equally good. Mollie looked after us during our meal and full marks to her for her efficiency. She was very convivial without being at all intrusive and is a credit to the hotel.. What’s not so good? It was a great shame that the restaurant was very quiet when we had our evening meal there. It was a pleasant Friday evening, the hotel was full (it was “Carfest” weekend) and everywhere else round and about seemed busy. The hotel needs to sell itself as a place to have dinner as the chef obviously knows his stuff. Tablecloths in the evening may serve to make the restaurant a little more cosy and inviting (and differentiate it from breakfast) together with tables that look to be “laid up” with wine glasses and cutlery. We’d actually booked a table (knowing that the hotel was almost full) but when we arrived (to an empty restaurant) a table had not been laid for us and we were left to our own devices. We chose to eat in the bar area as, had we gone into the restaurant, I doubt we would have been noticed at all. It seems a terrible waste to have such good food being enjoyed by so few people. The buffet breakfast is fine (especially the Black Pudding) but you need an appointment to make a slice of toast as the toaster is – to put it kindly – not very efficient. On our middle day a team of scaffolders arrived to erect scaffolding as the front of the hotel is being repainted. These jobs obviously need to be done but it was very intrusive at breakfast time (especially as it was warm and all the windows and doors were open). It was impossible to sit near the front of the hotel by one of the many window seats (at least if you wanted to chat). The work was undertaken across two half days, both in the morning. By lunch time when the hotel’s guests had mainly departed for the day, so had the scaffolders. I think the hotel management should have arranged for the work to be done after breakfast (and possibly after Bank Holiday weekend, which, coupled with the Carfest, must be among their busiest of the year). What’s a definite worry? The plate warmer at the breakfast buffet heats the plates to such a temperature that they are dangerous to handle. It must be known about because the staff issue copious warnings to anybody they see about to take a plate. This really needs addressing as it is my view that an accident will occur. Even with a handful of paper napkins it is impossible to hold a plate for more than a few seconds. Also, not something the hotel can do much about, but there is a nightclub next door. No problem when it’s open and everyone is inside doing whatever it is they do in night clubs. But it chucked out at 4am on Saturday morning. The customers seemed to congregate in the hotel’s car park (beneath the hotel rooms with windows open on a warm night) to say their “goodnights” – which seemed to last almost until daybreak! All in all a pleasant stay at very reasonable rates and the minor niggles did not spoil our enjoyment. Collapse

We stayed here on Sunday 27th for a friends birthday. It was the hottest night of the year. Although I can appreciate that in England we cannot control the weather the temperature in this room was unbearable.. we had a broken fan which offered no help and the window opened onto a brick wall. I would advise all to request not to stay in room one. After no sleep and having to go out a night to replenish drinks as it was £4.20 for two waters at the bar and after two visits was still thirsty, I feel on this occasion the hotel could of provided some water to compensate for the heat. The room itself needs some love and attention. Cracks in walls, shower head spraying onto the ceiling and the bed cover that dressed the bed stained. I would not rate this as three star and personally wished I booked into the premier inn. Having said this if you are looking for a central Basingstoke location this is great and the staff I had communication with were a great asset to the hotel. My overall experience from this visit is I will not be returning and was over priced for what we got. Collapse
