An already "very-good" hotel which once planned changes have been implemented will be "excellent"!

I work for a humanitarian agency of the UN, and stay regularly in Ramada hotels from Islamabad and Colombo, to New York and Zurich, because they offer a known-value: comfortable accommodation and facilities beyond the basic budget-chain offering yet at still-reasonable prices. My review of The Ramada Cambridge is therefore written from the perspective of the business traveller. This is a small hotel which has only recently been upgraded from a Days Inn, so it is only fair to bear that in mind when writing (or indeed reading) my review. For example, it doesn't yet have the full range of services the business traveller expects, but under the dynamic leadership of Manager Pavlin Petkov, the team is finding its feet, and willing to grow and expand the services they offer, and it is this "can-do" attitude which I believe will lift this friendly hotel to the next level. I didn't see it before the recent refurbishment, but I have met other guests who did, and all agree that there have been some very welcome changes, and still more are planned - notably the addition of more rooms. I need to work for several hours of the day, and whilst I feel that a dedicated business centre with secure, reliable WiFi would be a great asset, I really appreciate the large, comfortable, well-lit desk area in my spacious room as well as the free, unlimited WiFi - although it does drop from time to time. In fact, the large wardrobes, the wealth of drawer space, the generous hospitality tray (complete with biscuits!!), and the simple yet elegant bathroom all combine to make the rooms comfortable rather than just basic, although housekeeping standards could be improved. Since life isn't only work-related, it's worth mentioning that each room has a modern, wall-mounted flat-screen TV with some 60 available digital channels, and there is a small but well-equipped fitness-centre - a real plus in a small hotel! I also appreciate the restaurant, with its small but well-thought-out menu and wine list, and little touches like large, well-folded real napkins and candles on the table show an attention to detail that is admirable in a modest hotel, and all the more impressive because prior to the upgrade the hotel didn't have a restaurant at all. From my point of view, the lack of even a soup-and-sandwich lunch-time menu at the bar, or 24-hour room-service (both of which are advertised in the room information folder) is a drawback, but I know that this concern is being addressed, and will change soon. As will the current lack of a laundry service for guests. Once these changes have been implemented, and in view of the already impressive room standard, and superb staff commitment to the guests, this hotel will definitely merit a 5-star "excellent" review before long. It already is worthy of a highly-positive 4-star "very good", and I have no hesitation in recommending it. Collapse

The hotel is handy for those travelling and is cheap and cheerful enough at around £70 per room. A bed for the night when traveling is all it will be and what you need to expect No atmosphere in the bar area so don't arrive too early unless you like silence and being ignored by staff. Stayed here a few times purely for business and the check in is always painful as the ' systems are always down ' so may not have your booking. Even though I presented my booking confirmation I was told they don't have the booking. After several minutes of arguing my case I managed to get my key. ' not the receptionists fault I was told as if you book on line, it goes to the USA and they then send it on for the receptionist to manually add on?? Time difference I guess even though it was booked 3 days in advance!! Staff are miserable and there is a little fella with an 80s perm on top who is always arrogant and thinks he's the head honcho of the Bellagio the way he goes about his business. Your a Travelodge! Always good amusement watching him. Collapse
Very helpful staff

Arrival at reception excellent as was service within restaurant both breakfast & dinner excellent as was quality of food & presentation. However where hotel let its standard down was the lack of housekeeping checks. Room 114 the shower glass door from waist height down was thick lime scale with the ceiling paint peeling making what is a very good spaced shower look dirty! The bed side lights on the right side of the bed did not work , small points but relevant to a guest staying here. Collapse

Friendly staff. Quiet hotel with good facilities and friendly staff. Would have scored higher were it not for the dubious brown goo on the bathroom floor. Other than that it was scrupulously clean and comfortable.
