To my surprise this friendly, well designed and efficient hotel is the best I've stayed at for 'business' in the U.K. Terrific breakfast, good gym facilities and pool and the friendliest of staff. My room overlooked the river and had a view of the cathedral. It was clean and spacious. The dinner could have been better but the chef was making a real effort. Collapse
Good location, comfortable large rooms ... few tweaks would improve further

Hotel is in a good quiet location next to the river; short walk to the town centre. Rooms are large, modern, comfortable and pretty well equipped. Staff friendly and helpful. A couple of simple improvements would have improved things. Given the room rate, I don't think a parking charge for residents is justifiable - not a fortune (£8/night) but it detracts from the experience. Also very unusual not to find any biscuits with the tea/coffee making facilities - again not the end of the world but smacks of trying to cut costs and hotel multi-packs can surely only cost a few pence. Nice to have something to go with a cup of tea after a long trip. Finally, whilst I was not surprised, the hotel was unable to loan an umbrella (we forgot to bring one!) for a walk into town when it was raining. Most people will walk from the hotel so a big (missed!) opportunity to provide some branded umbrellas and advertise the place. A returnable deposit would prevent people walking off with them and would be a nice touch. I suspect the reaction will be that the hotel does not want to have to deal with a pile of wet umbrellas once they are retained but this could easily be sorted and just needs a little imagination. Fine but not outstanding for all the above reasons. Collapse
Terrible leisure facilities.

This review relates specifically to the leisure facilities. The pool area and changing rooms are now in a state of disrepair. There are broken tiles, and stained ceilings and floors throughout. After a workout or swim, male visitors have the option of a cold shower (dial has been fitted incorrectly) in the only private cubicle or in the communal shower with the missing partition and door. In essence, there are no suitable showers at the time of writing. It is disappointing for users that the shower problem has surfaced, as the fiasco of lockers without locks has only recently been solved. Unfortunately, a large proportion of members continue to leave belongings in them over night, so good luck with finding one. Changing room and toilet fittings tend to be broken, as are straighteners in the Ladies changing. A tap continues to run, several months since the fault arose, wasting god knows how much water. During busy times the poolside tends to be swimming with water and towel fluff, which trails all the way back to the changing rooms. Just hope no one enters the changing rooms with muddy shoes, because that tends to be how the floors are found due to sporadic cleaning. Basically, cleaning seems infrequent and is lacking in the detail that you would expect from a 4* hotel/spa. Despite complaints to management on several occasions and one to Group management, the facilities have seen little improvement and the facilities continue to suffer from bad workmanship, lack of investment and poor management. This has been the case for several years now. Considering that this is supposed to be a spa and 4* hotel, the whole offering is extremely disappointing. Collapse
Would definitely stay again...

This hotel is in an excellent location in Durham, just a 5 minute walk to the centre... we arrived early, but the rooms weren't ready until 2 so left our luggage in their luggage store. Room was very clean with everything you could need for a nights stay. Car parking is available for £8 per night. Only issue we had was phoning reception to borrow some plates and then needing to re-ring 30 mins later as still no plates - but this wasn't the end of the world! If I was returning to Durham, I'd stay here again! Collapse

I visited this hotel a couple of years ago and did actually make a complaint to the hotel at the time. I visited the hotel for a conference and they didn't book everyone in for the second night. Despite being one of the lucky ones who was still booked in, my room was changed without me knowing. I went to my room to collect an asthma inhaler (as the one I had on me had just ran out) and a pair of trainers for a trip out as part of the conference. My keycard didn't work no matter how many times I tried. A cleaner spotted me trying to get in and I explained my problem. She wouldn't let me in to even retrieve my inhaler (I was perfectly willing to let her come in with me to get it), but despite being obviously wheezy she wouldn't. I had to go to reception to sort the problem out, the problem being my room had been changed without my knowledge. They gave me half an hour to pack my things up and take my things up to my new room. All of this meant I missed the trip out as well as almost having a full-blown-call-an-ambulance asthma attack. The only reason I gave the hotel two stars and not one was I loved both meals I had in the hotel. If it wasn't for me not wanting to give money to the hotel over what happened, I would use that restaurant whenever I'm in Durham. Collapse
