My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. There was one little hiccup but I will come on to that later. The room was spacious and quiet. I was personally pleased that the TV in the room had Sky sports free to watch, so whilst my partner relaxed bathing, beautifying and other girly stuff, I watched a bit of footy-how massive!! The check in was smooth and continued to make the most of the facilities. Parking is added extra to the bill-£8.00 per night. The reason I haven't given it 5/5 is for the following: I thought the breakfast was just far too expensive, so we didn't partake and chose instead to have a walk into Durham and eat at 1/2 the price. Although the Leisure facilities are superb and free to guests, on the two occasions that we used it, it appeared like it wasn't well staffed. On Sunday afternoon we were booked in ok and the guy was very polite telling us the ins and outs etc, but there was no one around when we left. During this time there were also three young unsupervised, unruly, children in the Jacuzzi, causing a few "tutt's" from the users of the swimming area, so when we left the fitness suite, as said, there was no one to report this to (we mentioned this when we checked out of the hotel) as well as having to guess where to leave our used, wet towels. On the Monday morning when we used the facility again, we signed ourselves in and helped ourselves to two towels. We had waited a while to be seen to, but there was no one around. The fire alarm was set off during the evening but that was no fault or slight on the hotel in my opinion, as they have health and safety issues. Collapse
OK - but worth the premium price?

I've stayed in a few Radisson hotels (the hotel in Edinburgh is one of my favourites), so on a business trip to Durham, this was a hot contender! The hotel is well situated (albeit next to the soon-to-be-demolished modernist Milburngate building), although just over the river from Durham town centre, and is modern and clean. What it lacks though, is any character whatsoever. The public areas are large and somewhat cheerless, and service is average to slow. My room was huge and well maintained, but again (perhaps given the size), somewhat soulless. Breakfast was average buffet fair and coffee was tasteless and weak. The hotel just offer a gym and pool (free to residents), but whether this warrants paying more than £30/night more than the nearby Premier Inn (where I had a very lovely stay a year ago) is very debatable. And so, there's nothing really wrong with the Radisson, but nothing that great about it either! Collapse

First time we have stayed at this hotel. Found the reception staff unfriendly and officious. Room was nice. Bar staff were stressed and couldn't cope with the number of clients. We were first in the restaurant for breakfast the next morning and although there was a good selection of items to choose from the cooked breakfast (apart from the sausages) was cold. Staff didn't seem to be surprised or care and no alternative was offered. Certainly not the standard I expect from the Radisson chain. Collapse

Overall hotel has not changed significantly in recent years, and different problems still keep occurring. It is either TV not working, or a fridge inside is warmer than outside, or other things... But what has changed - is some new staff (that I have not seen last time) and the staff's attitude. I understand that different things might happen to anyone at any time - they are called accidents. But the way dealing with them in this hotel is completely different now than a year ago. BIG THANK YOU to MATHEW - this gentleman works in reception area and is most professional and polite staff member amongst all staff in all Radisson Durham. The hotel can be very proud to have MATHEW representing them in front of their customers. I came to the reception to report a problem with my room and - not like a year ago - this time I did not need to wait ages to get things resolved properly. Everything was done immediately, leaving me impressed and entirely happy with the outcome. With any further questions I was coming back always to MATHEW - and he was never irritated, but polite, professional nad meritorical at all times. So making a long story short - big improvement in Radisson Durham in last 12 months - and all that due to completely different (spectacularly better !!!) staff attitude. BIG THANK YOU MATHEW !!!
