Stay here quite often for business. Great location, very clean and the food was excellent! Had a Superior Room, but not sure why it was Superior as it seemed just like the normal rooms..... although it did overlook the river. Always hate two single beds put together.... always fall down the gap, so this wasn't brilliant. Air conditioning could be better, was a bit stuffy even with the window open. Collapse

The hotel has a good position, close to the old town centre. It has a spacious car park and good leisure facilities. The reception staff were lovely. Very welcoming and informative with a good sense of humour. The room was large and spotlessly clean with superb, large fluffy towels. The rooms and indeed the hotel itself is a little soulless, quite minimalist with few extras but perfectly adequate for a short stay Collapse
A visit to Durham spoiled by a bad hotel experience

I was looking forward for some time to my return visit to Durham where I had studied as a young man many years ago, exploring the old city once again, visiting the splendid Cathedral and to meeting up with the wife, now in her 95th year, of the Principal of my old College, the Bernard Gilpin Society. All these things I did, making it an excellent visit to a city that will always have a very special place in my life. Unfortunately however, my visit to Durham spoiled by a bad hotel experience. I had managed to find a good deal for bed and breakfast in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Durham. Its location on the riverside by the new Millennium foot bridge linking it to the old city made it an ideal location. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the room was very good and had excellent views across the River Wear to The Sands and the old city ... I had paid extra for a room with a river view. The view was excellent and the room was spacious and well laid out with comfortable chairs to relax in as well as a desk and chair to work at. In the evening I went to the hotel restaurant for dinner. For an hotel boasting good standards the the menu was uninspiring with only a few choices in each section. Indeed it looked like a gastro pub menu from the 1980's! As a starter, I decided on the “Mini Ploughman’s Platter” which offered a mini pork pie, honey roast ham, local cheddar cheese, home made chutney and crusty bread. Sounded interesting but was not so interesting looking when it arrived. The slice of ‘honey roast ham’ was quite dry and thick and the ‘mini pork pie’ had an unusual taste. All was well until the early hours of the following when I awoke with severe stomach pains and was very sick. It was the re-appearance of the ‘mini pork pie’! It took me a long time to settle into sleep again and my appetite for breakfast in the morning was very poor. I asked to speak to the duty manager. Richard appeared during breakfast and was very understanding when I told him of my suspected food poisoning. He explained that he would pass on my concerns to another manager who would deal with things. Later I was approached by “Tom” - no surnames, it appears to be a first name regime - who I presumed was the morning manager. He listened to my tale and said that I would need to “fill out a form” which would enable him to “check it out”. I met him later in the morning and he completed the form, asking me questions, which I signed. I met him again in the early afternoon when he reported that the hotel was not at fault as all their sell-by dates, temperatures, rotations, etc were in order and that I must have eaten something else which caused my upset ... which I did not. He was uncompromising, appeared uninterested and, while he did not say so in as many words, seemed to be saying that I had made it all up. I did not! The Radison Blu group claim to offer “100% satisfaction - guaranteed” adding “We’re committed to ensuring every guest enjoys 100% satisfaction” adding: “If you’re not satisfied with any aspect of your experience, let us know during your stay and we’ll make things right ... that’s our promise to you!” I did this but feel that I was not lsiened to ... and worse! I regularly stay in hotels in the UK and others parts of the world and have never, every before been made to feel that I was being untruthful. My experience at the Radisson Blu, Durham, has not been a good one. It is in a good location, so my advice is to stay there but to eat at the wide variety of locations close by and a short distance over the pedestrian bridge across the river in front of the hotel. I normally come here to the Lime House spa, and sit by the pool and workout in the gym. I was here also for a friends wedding a few years back when I was a bridesmaid, it was a great day, I enjoyed it alot.
