Stayed here for just over a week in November. The double bedroom was fine, with a reasonably comfy bed. The room had international as well as SA power outlets. Some of the bedrooms had fridges, however the only power points near a mirror were behind the fridge. So you could either have warm drinks and easy access when doing hair, or cold drinks and messy hair! I booked on a room only basis, so I could decide what suited me better for breakfast. The hotel breakfast was OK, but was a little over priced to other options. The garage within the complex sold really nice filled rolls and croissants, and next door in Spur, cooked breakfast was 29 ZAR, with unlimited coffee for 19 ZAR. So cooked breakfast and coffee for £2.70, or $3.50. Amazing Within easy (and safe) walking distance within the complex are Spur, and Green & Gold restaurants. Green & Gold offered a much wider menu choice, and is still really cheap by European standards. We ate there as a group several nights. Quality of service within the hotel was generally good, the person who checked me in would always address me by name when she saw me, a nice touch. The only area where the hotel let me down was on fire security. The main stairs are also the fire exit. On two of the four levels the fire doors did not close properly, one actually had the door closer removed. Every day I stayed there were trays of leftovers from room service just behind the doors leading to the stairs. In the event of an emergency, these represented a real trip hazard to anyone trying to quickly leave the building through the main stairwell. I did report this to reception staff, but next day the problem reappeared. Maybe this is not unusual for South Africa, but was well below European standards. I added two photos taken the day after I had reported the problem to the hotel. Collapse

I arrived at the hotel and was checked in by staff who I can only assume are new to the job. Although the hotel is part of the Marriott group, it is by no means a Marriott standard hotel. The hotel is located in the West Rand area of Johannesburg and is within a business park. As with all hotels in Johannesburg it is not necessarily safe to leave the confines of the park after hours. The room provided to me was adequate comprising a bed, sofa bed and work desk. The room did not come with any amenities to write home about. The hotel does not provide an iron so if you have clothes that have wrinkled during your journey, you have to either wear them as they are r pay for laundry services. Internet in the hotel is quite expensive (although 600mb per day is provided free of charge) with 2Gb costing 600 Rand which during my stay equated to around £35 GBP. The hotel restaurant was quite a disappointment; the breakfast buffet spread was quite limited. The hot food options were also cold. The coffee provided by the hotel during breakfast was not filtered properly and tasted “grainy”. On the first night I went to the restaurant next door “Spurs” and the food here was nice. After my meal I felt like having dessert so I looked at the room service menu and decided I wanted to pancakes. However, upon phoning downstairs the staff were quite reluctant to want to let me order and wanted me to come down to the buffet (to pay for a buffet when all I wanted was pancakes!!!) Eventually the agreed and I ordered a local dessert which was tasty. After my dessert I placed the tray outside my room around 2000 only to find the next morning that the tray was still outside my room (and had invited a few guests in the form of ants). The hotel provides a free shuttle to local businesses which is quite erratic and even if you book the shuttle the day before, the shuttle driver appears to be surprised when the hotel staff ask him to drive you somewhere. Being a Marriott Gold member, at a minimum I would have expected free internet but I was not even recognized as being a loyalty member of the Marriott program. Although conveniently located to where I needed to be, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and if you can book somewhere else I would. Collapse

We arrived early after our flight from the UK and were given a room straight away without any fuss, apart from my credit card having been stopped. Help was forthcoming when needed to log on to the internet and all in all this is an average priced hotel offering an average no frills service. There is an American themed diner next door serving reasonable food.and a much better value breakfast. A conveniently located, for me, South African "Travel Lodge", that I am returning to next month. We enjoy staying at the Protea Hotel Roodepoort. It's close to many shopping center and has a steak house right next store. The restaurant also has a nice play area. You can request a joining room if you have a large family, but make sure you request it ahead of time. Beds are comfy and sofa couch can make into a bed. Staff is very pleasant and always helpful. I left my hotel room in a hurry and forgot my iPad on the bed. When I returned it was missing and I contacted the front desk. The gentleman came with me and we did a thorough search of the room. I asked him to please ask the housekeeper where the iPad was since My son said he left it on the bed. The gentleman returned from the front desk with my iPad saying someone turned it into the lost and found because it was left at the reception area. I'm just happy that I was able to receive my iPad and I could enjoy the rest of my stay. They also have a cute Protea activity bag they give smaller children if they are available. I enjoy staying with my family in this hotel every year. Collapse
