The hotel was very good. Staff were friendly and helpful. The WiFi worked well. Tea and coffee is available for free in the lobby 24hours a day which is great. It is in a good location and close to the train and also the palace.

e were booked into this hotel as part of an organised bus trip. Reception staff were polite and organised. The room was clean, adequately furnished and the bathroom was fine (and equipped with toiletries and a hairdryer). The shower was over the bath and the water pressure and hot water were very good. Breakfast was on a buffet basis but offered a very good range of hot and cold food including a (new to us)pancake maker which was brilliant! The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the Royal Palace and the Cathedral both of which should be on anyones itinerary The city circular C1 and C2 buses stop outside the hotel and its a flat 1.5 euro fair for a complete clockwise or anti clockwise circuit. The 3 prinipal galleries are a 20 minute bus ride away. There are a few basic bars and "Meny del Dia "Restaurants close by which were good value beside the hotel and the popular Opera area is a 10 minute stroll away. Overall we found this hotel to be excellent value, situation was perfect for us and we wished we had taken a 5 day ,or longer ,stay -maybe next time Collapse
“Your hotel booking has been cancelled” – not what you want to hear when you arrive at reception – however…

After receiving this body blow – take a deep breath & don’t panic – the staff at the Principe Pio couldn’t have been more helpful. They found us a room for the night, tried to contact Secret Escapes for us to resolve the situation (at 6:00pm on a Saturday night always a long shot) and arranged a time to sort it out after breakfast the following morning. The room we were given did have the view of the Royal Palace (as we were expecting) illuminated against the night sky. It was warm & comfortable with an excellent bed. After a good breakfast the next morning and after managing to speak with Secret Escapes the reception staff were able to confirm that everything was okay and that we could keep the room we were already in. Well Hello Madrid! The hotel was in centrally located only a few minutes from the Principe Pio Rail station. We had transferred from the airport using the Renfe C1 train line. The journey took about 40 minutes, the train was modern, clean & punctual – there was plenty of room and for 2.60euro each: a snip. Out of the hotel & turn left will take you up the hill to Plaza De Espana, just before you reach it the park to your left has the Cervantes Monument with a fine sculpture of Don Quixote & Sancho Panza. Turn right at the Plaza and you enter the Gran Via with plenty to see & do. We used Di Bocca an Italian restaurant on two occasions and weren’t disappointed. We made our way to Puerta del Sol so my wife could show me the sights she’d visited when she made her first visit with my elder daughter some years before. They say all roads in Spain start here. The Plaza Mayor was one of our favourite places, a huge quadrangle with a Christmas market already set up. We went there on the Sunday and it is on that day that the Stamp & Coin Collecting sellers are there in force attracting large numbers of collectors from far & wide – the biggest we’ve ever seen. Very interesting. The Mercado de San Miguel is a must see place – an old market that houses bars & tapas sellers – it was too crowded on the Sunday afternoon but spent a pleasant time there the following day. Two other food/drink stops we liked were El Riojano on Calle Mayor, an old fashioned café with excellent cakes & drinks, and El Anciano Rey de los Vinos, a bar opposite the Catedral De La Almudena on Calle Bailen. During our short stay we managed to do the almost obligatory bus tour, but for 31 euro altogether we thought it very good value (Madrid City Tour - the Red bus). You can use the ticket all day and pick up/drop off at any of the 21 stops. We also visited The Prado with its fine collection of art. Goya, Velasquez & El Greco are very well represented there but you may find the promenading very tiring. The only surprising feature of the city was the large number of homeless people sleeping rough on the streets, we’ve not visited any city with such numbers visible to the visiting public. Madrid is an attractive city and has lots of things to do for those on a short city break. We found that the Hotel Principe Pio offered a very good location to base your stay – give it a try!
