We've stayed in Marriott hotels before which were lovely but this one was designed very strangely. The restaurant was right next to the entrance doors & the pool area was next to the restaurant. It was one big room with just low level dividers between them. The bedroom was fine, no garden to sit in except for a designated smoking area. Majority of staff very friendly & helpful, the restaurant staff were foreign & we couldn't understand them very well. Collapse

We had booked this long weekend away at the Portsmouth Marriot a month previous, on arrival we were told no alcohol would be available at the hotel, very disappointing as I was driving around and it would of been nice to have an alcohol drink in the hotel before retiring to our room. What we cannot understand why we were not given prior warning that the hotel would not be able to serve alcohol, very disappointed no information was given only on arrival. We stayed 3 nights, Hotel was perfect in every way, staff was very attentive, the No Alcohol was the only downer. Collapse

Overall a nice stay though and would certainly recommend the food. Collapse

For some reason I can't quite fathom, we appear to have paid for our two nights not far short of double the amount that is being quoted for a similar weekend say at the end of September. Market forces, I guess, or there was an event on in the area when we stayed. Anyway, check in was fine. Parking is free to residents as long as you give them your registration number on arrival. We were also given a late checkout and free wifi (I should think so). Room was OK, if a little dated. The bathroom, on the other hand, was quite dated with a shower curtain hanging over the edge of the bath. I haven't seen one of those for about 10 years. There is a small, non-working fridge in the room with a notice forbidding guests from switching it on. So, why not just remove it? There is no mini-bar. Our room had two king size beds. My partner used the gym facilities on both nights and said they were quite good. We didn't try the pool but did have a look at it. It seemed fine. On the first night, we decided to eat in the hotel's restaurant. Unfortunately, there were no tables left so we were advised to eat at the bar where we could choose from the same menu. Fair enough. So, we went to the bar area and waited, and waited...... There was a waitress who was busying herself around but studiously avoiding eye contact with us. In the end, my partner went up to her and asked for menus. Two menus were thrust towards us without a word. On returning to the table, we found they were drinks-only menus, so my partner went back and asked for food menus. The waitress snapped back that she was busy. It was not her job to hand out menus and if we wanted some then we should wander round and find some for ourselves. Right. I went back to the restaurant where a chap looking like a manager was standing and I told him what had been said. He could not apologise more profusely and told me to go back and he would sort it. Eventually, after we had been sitting at the bar table for about 30 minutes, the original waitress, whose job was not to serve customers came over and gave us two more drinks menus before she took our food order. To be fair, I discovered that some of the black menus had drinks only in them, whereas others, looking the same from the outside, had both drinks and food within. From that point on, service was OK. The food arrived. It was unspectacular. I had the fish 'N' chips (sic). It was so, so. It was also perhaps the first time my fish had ever been served on a huge bed of garden peas and chopped spring onions. Still, always time for a first, I guess. My partner had the chicken and leek pie. It also came on a huge bed of garden peas, chopped spring onions and green beans. It was nothing special. Next morning when we went to breakfast, the same waiting staff as the previous evening were on duty but it was quite apparent that nobody really knew what they were supposed to be doing. I asked the chef cooking eggs for two fried eggs. My partner also asked for two fried eggs. I started eating the rest of my breakfast when I noticed, shall we say, a "foreign body" on my bacon. I called over the waitress who snatched the whole plate away to show her manager. The plate never came back nor did an explanation arrive as to what I had found on my plate. So, I went up and got a second plate of breakfast, this time without the bacon. I came back and had eaten that before my two fried eggs arrived. My partner asked the waitress where her fried eggs were. She promised to find out but never came back. So my partner went and asked the lady cooking the eggs. Her response was "what? you want them now?". Er, they were actually wanted about 15 minutes ago. On our second day, the breakfast service was much better and seemed to work OK. It was a different set of staff. Overall, though, we found the range of what was available to be pretty poor. There was no yoghurt on view on either day. On day one there were no croissants, though there were a couple on the second day. There was no honey. The cooked food was fine, though. And, there was a limited range of juices available. We didn't dine in the restaurant on the second night after our previous night's experience. We ate out instead. The heating in the room was almost non-existent. I didn't report it as sometimes, life is too short, especially when you go down to reception and there are many customers seeking to check out. We simply doubled up with the duvet from the second bed on top of ours. Just before we checked out, even though we had put a "Do not disturb" sign on the door, the maid knocked to see if we had gone. What's the point of asking the staff not to disturb us when they will do so anyway? So, all in all, things were generally OK in a certain sort of way but nothing really stood out and I didn't feel I had really got my money's worth in view of the large amount I had paid. I would seek out a different hotel next time. Collapse
