This hotel is a great base to explore the local area. Set in beautiful grounds and quiet at night even though close to an A road. Welcoming staff and good food. Would definitely return! See more

My husband booked a surprise trip for us both as I Was recovery from surgery We had a very friendly welcome and asked if we needed any help with our luggage When we arrived in our room we were very happy with ok it could do with a update but every where was clean Had a meal in the restaurant which was superb and we were well looked after by James and Luke I went up to our room and left my husband in the bar ! The breakfast was also very good I was worried after reading prevous reviews but we were more than happy with the choice and friendly service The second evening we were going to eat out but decided to eat in once again an excellent meal The following morning had a lovely breakfast again The third night we thought we might eat out as the restaurant seemed very busy but ate in again there was a Calvery which my husband had he was very impressed and home made Yorkshire puddings ! I had steak which was cooked to perfection so our compliments to the chef ,you are lucky to have him good chefs are few and far between ! My husband stayed in the bar again was very unhappy with the lack of service which was the only complaint bar seamed to be very short staffed Ok the hotel could do with a face lift but over all we were very happy so happy that we are returning !! Can't wait !!! Collapse

We stayed for one night, room was OK, clean and tidy and as they have a restaurant we decided to try it for dinner. We had a lovely meal which was well cooked, so all good so far. For breakfast however it was make your own tea by dunking a tea bag into a mug using water from a hot water dispenser, not boiling! You really cannot make tea without BOILING WATER. Toast was DIY, but there were no tongs with which to select the toast from the drawer and place it onto the toaster or indeed to take the hot toast from the machine and place it on the plate. The buffet breakfast was awful, as everything was sitting on hot plates, the sausages were cooked to death and would have made ideal replacement soles for ones shoes and there was such a huge pile of bacon that the rashers at the bottom would never be eaten, just such a waste. So I wanted two soft poached eggs please and was presented with one nicely poached soft egg and one that had obviously broken when being put into the pan, but had been cooked and presented as hard poached as one could imagine. The small things meal a lot especially when you boast a 4* rating, the breakfast presentation and tepid tea simply means we will not return. There is no lift and many steps, so although there s a disabled entrance I am not sure how you would get to the upstairs rooms. Collapse
Nice hotel set in elegant grounds.

Stayed there overnight en route to Pembrokeshire. Made to feel very welcome, but bar service was poor. There didn't appear to enough staffing duty. On the plus side, good was excellent and room was very nice.

One of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in - certainly in the UK. This is a hotel that claims to specialise in wedding receptions and it looks grand when you arrive, bit it isn't. Maybe it used to be, but it certainly isn't now. First, we checked en route that the restaurant would be open when we arrived at 1pm, and were assured it would be. It wasn't - we were told the bar was open (although no staff to be seen) where we could order soup and sandwiches, but that was it. Not exactly a restaurant. So we went into Ross-on-Wye to eat as our rooms weren't ready yet. Got to our rooms at about 3pm. Two floors up and a long walk but no lift and no offer to help with baggage, even though we were carrying cases and instruments. Room very hot during the heatwave, but no air-con, not even a fan. A friend's room still had the heated towel rail on full and, despite complaining, nothing was done about it. Rooms also had dorma windows that acted like a magnifying glass. It was like a sauna in my small little room that also wasn't particularly clean. We went out in the evening and, when we returned to the hotel at around 10.45pm, we asked if the bar was open and told it was, which you'd expect in a hotel at 10.45 on a Friday night. We went to the bar, which appeared to be closing up. The surly member of staff behind the bar told us we could order one drink, then he was closing. I asked for a Cointreau with ice but was told they didn't have any ice. A bar, with no ice! I said I'd only want it if they had lots of ice so he reluctantly said he could go and get me some. About five minutes later he returned with one ice cube. We said we'd like to order another drink before he closed, which again he reluctantly agreed to. So I asked him if he could go and get me some more ice for the second drink - lots of it. It was like I was asking him to find me some treasure buried in the hotel grounds. So we got our drinks and were just sitting down to enjoy them when another unfriendly member of staff (possibly the 'manager') arrived and told us we had to leave the bar as they were closing it, but we could sit in the lounge. So off we went to the lounge, sat down to relax and, five minutes later, the fire alarm went off. Eventually some staff arrived and told us to leave the building, so we did. One member of staff said it was probably someone smoking in their room. More likely is the fact that every bathroom door has a sign telling you to shut the door when showering as the steam can set off the fire alarms. So at 11.30pm we're outside in the rain with our drinks and precious ice and all agreeing this place made Fawlty Towers seem very reasonable. It just carried on like that. Next morning, the breakfast was terrible. Everything overcooked, sausages rock hard, the worst scrambled eggs I'd ever eaten (if there were any eggs in it), no tea bags - had to ask for some when eventually I found a member of staff. I could go on but I'm boring myself now. All I'd say is, do not use this hotel and certainly don't think about having your wedding reception there. Why get your married life off to a bad start? One of our party did complain when we left the hotel in the morning but the reaction was little more than a shrug. The truth is, if you expect staff to work in such a terrible environment, their standard of service will be just as bad. Nobody could care less. Dreadful. Collapse
