This hotel is a great base to explore the local area. Set in beautiful grounds and quiet at night even though close to an A road. Welcoming staff and good food. Would definitely return! See more

The hotel was adequate. The room was basic - large but only one chair for two people and the bed was small. It seemed as if the bed was for one person and they squashed two in. The restaurant service was very slow and poor. We asked to staff to turn the heating up, and they said I don't know what to do - they seemed to have a can't do attitude. When we asked for another jug of water, she told us we could go and get it ourselves from the bar. When we asked what the SuperBreak 'free' dinner menu included, the waitress had no idea. She told us you can go and enquire at reception - no offer for her to find out. The dining room was very cold. Service was very slow. The items on the menu were not accurate. For example ... one dish included 'sweet potatoes' but ordinary potatoes arrived. Another said it had a home made piece of shortbread with it, none arrived. Another guest asked why this was - she was told. Oh I don't know. Does it matter? We wanted a spoon for the dessert, and the waitress couldn't find one. We waited about 10 minutes for one to arrive. We asked at reception for a map of the area. None was available and also no leaflets of local amenities. We were promised a map of a walk to be printed off, but it was not done. Collapse

Just returned from a night away in Ross on wye, we spent the night at penyard house. What a lovely hotel, really nice communal areas and grounds friendly and helpful staff. We had a standard double room which was clean well equipped with a good size bathroom. The breakfast was great self service with plenty of choice, the only slight problem was the cooked breakfast was under hot lights that dried the black pudding out. All this for £65 I felt was great value . After a great day out in Ross itself we had booked a table for evening meal back at Penyard house this was spectacular great food at a very reasonable price honestly the four of us that ate absolutely loved the food my compliments to the chefI would happily recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay just outside Ross on wye. although this was just an overnight stay, it lived up to expectations. I had a comfortable, well appointed room which was spacious and very clean. Tea and coffee facilities, lovely fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and a modern TV all helped to make the short stay a good one. Breakfast was served in a modern dining area and consisted of continental breakfast or a tasty cooked alternative. There were plenty of pastries, toast and hot drinks too. The staff are all very friendly and helpful which made the stay even more pleasurable. I would have no hesitation in booking again. Collapse

We never actually got to visit Penyard House but it is the worst hotel I've had dealings with. We phoned to book for New Year's Eve and sent a deposit. There was no acknowledgement until we phoned to check it had been received. The same happened when we sent the balance. We also had to call to find out the dress code and the time the room would be ready. They sent a form for us to select our meal and we had to supply the envelope and stamp to return. Due to a family bereavement late on December 30th. we called on the morning of 31st to say we would be unable to attend. They called back to suggest we sell our tickets on. A place we shall avoid at all cost! Collapse

Arrived at Penyard House on 23rd December for Xmas travelled with Coach Firm. On arrival was greeted by very nice staff ,were given hot chocolate and Mince pies and then given our room key. Found our own way to the room which I can say was the best I had been in .Large double bed and big room Very Clean and well equipped with Tea & Coffee. Evening meal was good but could have been a bit warmer but in general meal was Ok. Breakfast was good except we had to queue and wait for food to be brought in from the Kitchen but was good when we got it. Xmas Day Lunch was very nice but it was the fist time I have had to Queue again .Starters and sweets served at the table. Early hours of Boxing morning started with Diarrhoea and sickness .after that everyone was confined to their rooms until we left the hotel on the following morning. The staff were good in bringing food to the rooms but I was very disappointed in the breakfast one croissant in a bag which I had to ring down for twice..I felt sorry for the people who were well and did not get fed as they should have been. It spoilt my Xmas holiday Collapse

We travelled down for a family funeral. Due to distance and timing we needed to stay over for two nights. My wife looked on the net and got a good deal for Penyard House. We arrived on the Sunday afternoon and were booked in by a very pleasant lady on reception. We were in rooms 4&5. These were on the first floor and there is no lift in this part of the building. There is a wide staircase and my mother and father-in-law had no problems climbing them even though both are in their eighties. Both were nice and roomy and had all usual requirements including iron and ironing board in the wardrobe. There was a nice view over the grounds at the front of the hotel. The television remote was missing but I told the girl on reception and a young man asked which room we were in. By the time I got back to our room there was almost instantly a knock on the door and a young man brought a replacement, great service. We went to visit relatives a few miles away in Llangrove and then later drove to the Beefeater at the Premier Inn some 3 or 4 miles away to meet another family member staying there. He had payed the same price as us but obviously we had breakfast included whereas his was extra. We ate with him at the Beefeater so I can't comment on the evening meal at Penyard. We went back and had a couple of drinks in the hotel bar which were about normal prices. There were also another couple of snug lounges. Our bed was one of the most comfortable that I have slept in and it was a quiet night as you are situated away from the road. There was a good choice on the menu for breakfast, I had the full English which was ok and my wife had porridge. This was proper home made and nice and thick. The service was good on both mornings but the hotel was quiet due to the time of year. We didn't eat in the hotel on the second night either as there was a meal after the fun ear so again I can't comment on the restaurant's evening meals. We had coffees with relatives on our final morning before setting off home and these were very reasonably priced. The main house and rooms are full of character and the nine acres of grounds are very well kept. The hotel is handily placed very near Ross-on-Wye and also between Gloucester and Monmouth. There is a nice garden centre two or three miles away in Ross and this has a small but very nice tea room. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would return. All of the members of staff that we came into contact with were very pleasant and helpful. Collapse
