This hotel is a great base to explore the local area. Set in beautiful grounds and quiet at night even though close to an A road. Welcoming staff and good food. Would definitely return! See more

The hotel was adequate. The room was basic - large but only one chair for two people and the bed was small. It seemed as if the bed was for one person and they squashed two in. The restaurant service was very slow and poor. We asked to staff to turn the heating up, and they said I don't know what to do - they seemed to have a can't do attitude. When we asked for another jug of water, she told us we could go and get it ourselves from the bar. When we asked what the SuperBreak 'free' dinner menu included, the waitress had no idea. She told us you can go and enquire at reception - no offer for her to find out. The dining room was very cold. Service was very slow. The items on the menu were not accurate. For example ... one dish included 'sweet potatoes' but ordinary potatoes arrived. Another said it had a home made piece of shortbread with it, none arrived. Another guest asked why this was - she was told. Oh I don't know. Does it matter? We wanted a spoon for the dessert, and the waitress couldn't find one. We waited about 10 minutes for one to arrive. We asked at reception for a map of the area. None was available and also no leaflets of local amenities. We were promised a map of a walk to be printed off, but it was not done. Collapse

Booked a 'suite' for two nights as regular room not available for consecutive nights. Apparently the room according to a member of staff was the 'bridal suite' thankfully we were not on honeymoon as we would have been extremely disappointed. Wonderful view across the grounds from the very large bay window - bay radiator not working and if it was difficult to reach - two smaller radiators tepid - full length curtains covering the radiators so any heat lost. Washbasin in bedroom - step up into the bathroom which had just a toilet and bath - shower curtain not touching bath so water over floor! Radiator in bathroom not working - no shelves - cistern took ages to fill. Could hear the people in the next room snoring and their cistern filling!! We did in fact move the next day to a perfectly adequate room and received a refund for the one night in the regular double room against the higher rate for the suite. Staff pleasant and self service breakfast was as expected. Whole hotel feels as though it needs updating to give it atmosphere and bring some of the rooms into the 21st century. Collapse
So pleased my first choice of hotel was not available. Best breakfast as well!

I lucked out when booking this hotel. Working in Hereford during the week and only deciding to stay at the very last moment i.e. on the day. Could not find anywhere in Hereford (not even a Travelodge). Looked further afield found Penyard House. It was way below my budget so I took a gamble not expecting too much. Just under 2 miles outside Ross on Wye, it is set in very well maintained grounds with plenty of parking. I then realised it was a conference / meeting / venue / hotel of which I had stayed in something similar in Maidstone (which is the same company). The building looks well maintained. Through the automatic door you are presented with a lovely interior. Whether you were here for a wedding or conference you should be very satisfied. The first thing that really stands out is the friendliness of the staff. Greeted by a very friendly and helpful lady on the desk. Offering advice on where to eat and if I wanted to bring back a takeaway; that would be fine. Paid for the room, found the room and although quite basic it has everything I needed i.e. Desk, Iron, big telly, lovely bathroom plus a bed which was comfy. Not Hilton comfy but certainly good enough for a good night sleep. Found the local takeaway (see previous reviews - 2 of them) and settled in for the night. Free Wi-Fi which was free, fast and consistent. I did not test the speed but watching YouTube and Netflix there was no issue with buffering. Breakfast in the morning starts at 7 although the first two days arriving just after 7 it was not ready. 2nd day the hot food was not out until 20 past. Not an issue as after the coffee, fruit and delicious croissant it was ready. Staff here also very friendly and working hard to get everything ready. Perhaps you should think about starting breakfast at 7 for those who want continental with hot food from 7:30 Still should be early enough. Last day there were not many guests for breakfast and hot breakfast was cooked to order. I have to say this was one of the best breakfasts I have had all year. In the last two weeks I have stayed at a Hilton and Mercure and their breakfasts do not come anywhere close to the one here. The ingredients are first class and it was cooked and seasoned absolutely perfectly. Compliments to the chef. Checking out just as easy as checking in. A great stay and for the price I can only give it 5/5. I will definitely go back if in the area, although this may not be your first choice, for around half the price of a Premier Inn it is a no brainer. Collapse

The accommodation offered on Booking.com is not the room you will stay in. Misleading advertising. The bed was very uncomfortable, the bedding of poor quality. One chair in a room booked for two people to stay. Breakfast was poor with hard lumpy scrambled eggs and other food obviously having sat on the warming plate for a while. The staff were all very polite and cheerful. The hotel requests payment on arrival so I would advise asking to see the room first to see if you have what you think you have booked. Collapse

Nice grounds, nice hotel, clean, nice staff, buffet breakfast ok'ish, drinks very expensive £5.70 for a bottle of beer ! , food in restaurant is hit and miss, starter was lovely main was rubbish ?, bathroom fan sounds like a plane warming up, strike plates missing on window so it rattled in the wind, niether of the bedside wall lights worked and one didn't even has an on/off switch? , staff gave us a lamp to put beside the bed but no plug sockets near the bed, cleaner done well though she took our two glasses and two dirty mugs and helpfully replaced them with one of each but gave us enough towels ?, this is mutton dressed as lamb, if none of this bothers you its very clean and staff are very nice, and I have to confess that the staff have done there best to resolve these issues that should never have been issues in the first place.
