This hotel is a great base to explore the local area. Set in beautiful grounds and quiet at night even though close to an A road. Welcoming staff and good food. Would definitely return! See more

The hotel was adequate. The room was basic - large but only one chair for two people and the bed was small. It seemed as if the bed was for one person and they squashed two in. The restaurant service was very slow and poor. We asked to staff to turn the heating up, and they said I don't know what to do - they seemed to have a can't do attitude. When we asked for another jug of water, she told us we could go and get it ourselves from the bar. When we asked what the SuperBreak 'free' dinner menu included, the waitress had no idea. She told us you can go and enquire at reception - no offer for her to find out. The dining room was very cold. Service was very slow. The items on the menu were not accurate. For example ... one dish included 'sweet potatoes' but ordinary potatoes arrived. Another said it had a home made piece of shortbread with it, none arrived. Another guest asked why this was - she was told. Oh I don't know. Does it matter? We wanted a spoon for the dessert, and the waitress couldn't find one. We waited about 10 minutes for one to arrive. We asked at reception for a map of the area. None was available and also no leaflets of local amenities. We were promised a map of a walk to be printed off, but it was not done. Collapse

Bought via Wowcher. Booked via telephone efficiently and checked in efficiently also. We booked dinner on the first night and our reservation was not on the table booking list. The waitress asked us to speak to the barman who apparently dies the bookings. I instead went back to reception and the lady who took our reservation who had a word with the barman and we were shown to a table. My wife had the lamb shank which she enjoyed. I had a soup starter with small finger rolls. The soup was very nice but the rolls were hard as wood with no exageration. I had to force the knife from the soft end and split it open. My main mean was pork belly. The black pudding was lime the rolls, a knife could not cut through. Other than that the food was good and breakfast also except the black pudding which was a little brittle. I'm not fussy in the least and enjoyed my meal regardless and I'll assume the chef was just having a bad weekend as our last stay the food could not be faulted. Staff were pleasant and helpful and our room was decent as expected. I could be fussy and nit pick dust ,mould, flaking paint ,a rip on the beds etc but my home is very presentable but not perfect so why some people not pick I don't know. We had room 24 and it was more than adequate and clean as well as modern enough. As per our previous stay, the hotel inside and outside including the grounds were immaculate. We had another peaceful and tranquil stay. You can't but enjoy your stay and the local area. Collapse
Fabulous! Exceeded our expectations.

Stayed at Penyard House for a weekend with my boyfriend. The booking included a 3-course dinner on one night of our stay and breakfast both mornings. I couldn't fault a thing about our stay. The food was fantastic, and included in the booking presented excellent value for money. And the room we had (7) first floor at the front of the house was spectacular. It was huge! We were so pleased. And everything was lovely. The hotel had a huge event on the first night of our stay but you'd never have known it - it was so quiet and peaceful. There are plenty of beautiful lounges to retire to and two bars so once you return from a day exploring you don't have to spend the evening in your room. Ross on Wye is about a 20 minute walk away and it's paved all the way. Perfectly comfortable to walk in the daytime but it's pitch black at night so would recommend a cab back to the hotel. We did this twice and both rides on meter cost us £6! Amazing value and the cabs work late too so they're easy to book last minute - unlike with some countryside hotels we've stayed in! Book dinner at No.3 in Ross one night too. It's exceptional but it books a month ahead on weekends so don't wait to make a reservation at the last minute! All in all a fantastic stay at Penyard House and we wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend it to others. Collapse

Just returned from this hotel . The hotel itself is very nice, some minor decoration required but that's normal for most hotels! The meals were very nice with evening meal in the conservatory very well presented and really tasty, well done chef! We paid extra for the "suite", let me warn you Do Not Bother! There is no way it could be a suite, there was only a doubly bed, one comfy chair and 2 high backed chairs! The bathroom was so small there was only a bath and toilet in there, with the sink being in the bedroom! Not hygienic at all having to wash your hands after using the toilet either in the bath or spread your germs to the bedroom!! Also the drains smelt terrible in the bathroom all the time! The view from the room was very nice, in fact about the best thing about the room! The grounds were lovely and very pleasant for a walk around in the early spring sunshine. Monmouth and Gloucester within easy reach and Ross-On-Wye very close. The staff were very friendly on the whole, although when we arrived there were raised eyebrows when they opened our booking on the computer and saw we had booked through super breaks! Nothing was said to us but they appeared not to be very happy about it! Overall we enjoyed our stay but we definitely advice not to pay the extra for the "suite". Collapse

Chose to stay here for a night close to Valentines day. We love the area and this sounded a great place to come and stay. We arrived and thought what a fabulous place and were immediately intrigued about the history to all it. Lovely grounds and building. Staff were great and welcoming. we were put into the annex building due to a large wedding party staying here this weekend and also a reception party for the wedding. I was called in advance of this and pre warned, thence being asked if we wanted to swap rooms, i was very grateful to this and accepted. We were a little surprised at the room and did not find the bed that comfortable and lacked extra available bedding. We felt the room was a little tired and could do with some updating. The price was good and could not complain at that. The shower was difficult and would not warm up, and the toilet seat was lose so moved! Breakfast was okay, good choice and nothing wrong with quality but lack of customer care in that it was busy so under staffed and lacked enough cutlery. Usual shenanigans with the toaster that everyone was complaining at, not sure these buffet breakfast ideas are the most effective for a large hotel, although economical i would think. Would stay here again as the location was so great and i do believe in supporting the non corporate giants! Collapse
