This hotel is a great base to explore the local area. Set in beautiful grounds and quiet at night even though close to an A road. Welcoming staff and good food. Would definitely return! See more

The hotel was adequate. The room was basic - large but only one chair for two people and the bed was small. It seemed as if the bed was for one person and they squashed two in. The restaurant service was very slow and poor. We asked to staff to turn the heating up, and they said I don't know what to do - they seemed to have a can't do attitude. When we asked for another jug of water, she told us we could go and get it ourselves from the bar. When we asked what the SuperBreak 'free' dinner menu included, the waitress had no idea. She told us you can go and enquire at reception - no offer for her to find out. The dining room was very cold. Service was very slow. The items on the menu were not accurate. For example ... one dish included 'sweet potatoes' but ordinary potatoes arrived. Another said it had a home made piece of shortbread with it, none arrived. Another guest asked why this was - she was told. Oh I don't know. Does it matter? We wanted a spoon for the dessert, and the waitress couldn't find one. We waited about 10 minutes for one to arrive. We asked at reception for a map of the area. None was available and also no leaflets of local amenities. We were promised a map of a walk to be printed off, but it was not done. Collapse

Beautiful setting, helpful staff and an excellent meal in the restaurant, which was very good value for money. Only negative was the bed was rather uncomfortable and we were asked to move our restaurant reservation to 45 minutes later.

We booked a one night stay but considered cancelling after reading some adverse reviews. We are very glad we didn’t. We had an excellent stay. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room clean, well equipped and well maintained. Very good value for money. The extensive hotel grounds are impressive and well kept. The hotel has several comfortable sitting areas. We would recommend Penyard House for a good value stay. Collapse

The evening I visited it was raining, but if it had been a better night I could have taken advantage of the lovely grounds that surround Penyard House. Breakfast buffet style, good choice of both cold and hot food. I would definitely stay again if I was visiting the area. Collapse

Initially booked for one night and changed to 2 nights which was a mistake! We were given a room in the annexe which had no meaningful directions to enable you to find it. Our room was dusty and long past its sell by date in this day and age and if you decide to stay, remember to take your own bath towels (the towels provided are unacceptably small for your average adult! - I quote ' we don't do different sizes , only small ' !) , take a bottle of water for night time thirst and 2 x tumblers for bathroom plus a box of tissues. There is no information book on how telephone works, what time breakfast, dinner is or even a menu, no general local information - nothing, zero, nyet! The only thing you will find in a drawer is a lonely hairdryer. More worryingly, there are no Fire Escape instructions and a shelf built across the window which prevents you being able to open the window to escape in an emergency unless you are extremely athletic. There was no plug for our bath so we requested one when we went out in the morning and there was a plug there when we returned in the evening but no attempt had been made to attach it to the chain! This really typifies the lack of attention to detail here. We were not looking for a Four Seasons experience at the price we paid but for less money in a Premier Resort you will get modern furnishings, a comfy bed, decent towels and somewhere for a decent meal close by. We wish we had just gone there. Our search for a last minute break ended up here as all other central hotels were fully booked and it is now clear why there was still accommodation available here ! Ah yes...dinner! We were directed to the bar where we were told a booking person would come and slot us in! Having been told there were 100 people being fed that evening we would have to accommodate the chef's timescales. Totally appreciate that the chef can't ,make 100 meals at once but the we counted maximum of a couple of dozen people over the course of the evening. Seated in a badly lit bar area with an emergency exit, bare windows and no real furnishings we weren't considered important enough to be seated in the adjoining conservatory where there were dozens of empty tables - this wasn't as important as the food when it eventually arrived. The description on the menu bore no resemblance to what appeared. The chef should really acquaint himself with what a terrine looks like , the buttered potatoes were not and looked like previous night's heated up, The fish was grey but edible and the vegetables uncooked. puddings are of the 'bought in variety' but we ate it given we were very hungry. We ate elsewhere for the rest of our stay. We highly recommend The Royal in Ross on Wye with stunning views, great food and wonderful service. At least their barman knew what a Martini was and how to serve it! At Penyard House the barman looked aghast when I ordered an gin martini and promptly shoved a measure of gin and a measure of martini in a water tumble with some ice thrown in as an after thought. When I politely said I never have had a martini in a water tumbler before (and by the way, could I have a twist of lemon please)I was given a long explanation about how the hotel had organised a James Bond themed evening and no-one asked for a martini so that's why they don't have any appropriate glasses! If you should want a cocktail I should think the bar staff would faint so take your own glasses with you too. Papers?? We were asked if we wanted papers. Yes please, we did - but we would have to get dressed at 7am on a Sunday morning to go outside and into main hotel to collect them. Couldn't they leave outside our room? Oh no - we couldn't do that! Well ...we would like you to as one of the small pleasures of having a weekend away is the Sunday papers in bed for a quiet read . Very reluctantly they agreed but it was too much to expect that they were left outside our room for two mornings! Of course not - we had to go and collect them. These are all small things but when you add them up as one thing after another they are very annoying. We have stayed in the most humble of B&Bs to the very best 5 star hotels worlwide and everything in between and expect the appropriate experience so we weren't looking for more than what we were paying for so this was a huge disappointment. Would we go again? definitely not. Would we recommend it ? Defintely not. Only the decent breakfast elevated our rating from 1 to 2 stars Collapse

Hotel looks lovely has you drive in, on arrival reception was ok, I had booked a suite, has this was the last hotel stay on our trip, very disappointed with the room, although very large, the carpet needs to be refurbished, it only had one bedside lamp, one easy chair to sit in, and two dining chairs? The bathroom was so small that the basin was in the actual bedroom, the distance between the bath and toilet was approx an inch each side if that ,I will just say not very pleasant when going to the loo, also a large step into the bathroom, (which should have a notice to advise as per Health and Safety) on the plus side it was clean. We booked a table in the restaurant, when we arrived we were told we were eating in the conservatory as as the restaurant was for people who were on the tour! The staff in the bar and restaurant were really nice and helpful and the food was fine, breakfast however, was not so good, we went Down at 8.15 to a buffet breakfast which had been sitting and a little dry, this hotel stay was a let down to a lovely week away. There was also no Info in the room, advising hotel amenties. Collapse
