Very central to trains and buses, money changer and small shop for essentials. Two buildings but all eat breakfast at biggest one. Staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms very big with views. Breakfast was a great variety each day.

Our travel agent picked the spot.... Great locale... Fort Canning Park was spectacular. The hotel is exactly what I expected... Friendly staff... Excellent breakfast buffet.... Clean and good sized rooms for a couple.... However the best find was the Beauty and Wellness House across the road in Peninsula Plaza.... Had the best foot massage ever... Amy was gold.... It's a tiny shopfront just beside the information desk... But pure gold.... Treat your feet after a day out exploring... Collapse

Stayed 3 nights and visit to Singapore was after a lapse of over three decades to see the changes to the city. The location was perfect within walking distance to Bugis Street, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, etc. And if walking was a bit much in the heat, City Hall rail stop was very close to the hotel. Didn't eat at the hotel other than a snack with cocktails in the lounge on the 22nd floor which had a spectacular view. Worth having a quiet break up there for that alone. The cocktail menu was interesting as it had drinks that I hadn't seen for years. And so I opted for a Snowball which was Advocaat and lemonade. Opposite the Fire Station around the corner from hotel is a street food centre which had plenty of locals eating and drinking. We thought that it must be good, and weren't disappointed with the cheap local cuisine. Next to the Fire Station is an entrance to Fort Canning Park. The stairs were challenging but we persevered and headed for the Battlebox to do a tour of the WWII structure. Well worth the $18 and I couldn't recommend it more highly. The park is very nice as well. The room was spacious as was the bed and comfortable. Ample power sockets, good complimentary wifi, efficient hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities, safe and 2 complementary bottles of water each day. Bathroom was showing a bit of ageing but was clean and in good condition. Shower had good water pressure and was over the bath, so would prove difficult for some older guests. Did have non slip dots in the standing area of the bath though which was appropriate for safety. We booked the hotel through a third party site and got a good rate that we were happy with. Would recommend to others and would stay again. Collapse
Not all what I expected

I do not normally write a long review (and I have been a member of Trip Advisor for many years). I was stationed at Changi Airbase in 1964 up until 1967 so this visit to Singapore was mainly Nostalgia inspired. It was a long journey overall for my wife and I so we were tired when we arrived at the Peninsula Excelsior. We booked in notwithstanding a Three Hundred Dollar deposit (against breakages). For 75 year olds that was inappropriate I thought however . . . The Room: Spacious? Yes. Tidy? Yes. Quality Furniture (No) - something out of the 1960`s so I suppose I should have been at home. Wall Sockets - most of the time I couldnt get them to work properly. Storage - not much (I have had more storage space on a number of cruises I have been on). One wardrobe for the two of us with 7 coat hangers (two of which were in use for robes for swimming). Hardly adequate for a 10 night stay wouldnt you say? Drawers? Well there were a couple but not adequate once again for two people. Complimentary Tea and Coffee adequate (not really). Small bottle of water at five dollars. I used the water out of the tap and so did my wife. Bathroom: Well firstly the hairdryer didnt work nor did the shaver socket. The shower was a relic once again and when you got it running, the head started rotating side to side. Had to jam a sponge behind so it stayed relatively stable. Minute touches on the control to get warm or cold and if not careful you got tea making temperatures. The was a bath below the shower which had an impression of a non-slip mat. Not good enough for 74 year olds so I asked for a proper one. Never got it. There was no loo brush. I asked for one - no, dont have any of those. Shower curtain could do with a good wash. Running the sink water was fine - no problem except when water was let out, the sound down into the drainage system seemed louder than the monsoon drains. Room 1305: Looking out over one of the swimming pools plus all the construction work going on alongside and up above us (cranes included). Go outside to sit and eat at the second swimming pool (overlooking the Fire Station) and the construction noise took your eardrums for a walk. Oh well, Singapore is growing!!! Central Fire Station nearby so we knew when there was a call-iout at night Room Servicing: was a bit erratic. Had the do not disturb button on once so my wife could wash her hair. Finished that a found a note under the door saying couldnt service the room because the DND button was on. If we wanted the room serviced then make an appointment with the housekeeper!! We eventually managed that. Lifts: Yes, Ok once you mastered the coding system with your key-card. Breakfast included: Yes. Absolutely no complains about hygiene, quality of food, variety of food - great and enjoyed it. Coffee wasnt that great but at the end of the day where can you get good coffee wherever you stay. Sky Lounge - great and the views fantastic. Food was OK but I dont like eating in a `quality dining room` with two televisions mounted on the wall to distract you. Staff - very polite and efficient. Menu - just the same as in Coleman`s cafe down below. Colemans Cafe: Fine: The waitresses looked after us very well and well done to them. Some problems at times. Ordered soup for the two of us and 40 minutes later still hadnt arrived then it dawned on everybody somebody had forgotten the soup. Apologies and a plate of sliced melon as compensation. Same price though. Very skimpy on the wine which was itself quite expensive. Still, we were on holiday wernt we? The one thing that drove my wife and I mad was the uninvited attention of the Senior Restaurant Manager (Noordin). He seemed to suggest we were `special` when we were not (as he did with some others). He always seemed to be there when you didnt need him. Wanted to shake your hand, suggest what you do for the day, have his `special coffee` no extra charge. Suggested we could have a reduction on certain meals. If he didnt see us on entry to the breakfast room or Colemans he certainly looked for us and as soon as he did he was there. Was he hoping for a nice tip - he didnt get one. Lobby Staff: couldnt fault them. Fine bunch of fellows. Spinellis - nothing special If I were asked to rate this hotel I would say it was not a 4 star but a 2-3 star at best. Probably on a par with the Skylane or one of the other overnight hotels at Gatwick Airport. Collapse
