But - There's always a but! We were lucky enough to have a week of perfect, very hot, weather. Reservations were efficient by direct contact, and reception pleasant and helpful on arrival. A pool view room with balcony and two chairs, was ready by the time we had a snack lunch. They are adequate size with big double bed but somewhat small bathrooms (which appear to have been refurbished in the relatively near past). The hotel celebrated 50yrs last year. A coffee machine is in the room but room service were pleased to bring a kettle and teacups - great for us. Golf is on the 'championship' course designed by Henry Cotton. Years ago it was a very damp soil but in recent years much work has improved the fairways a lot. Greens are good but sadly you can finish up repairing multiple pitch marks which others should have done. Resident green fees are reasonable but buggies (we are in our 70's and there are some long green to tee walks - as well as being hot) are 10-15 euro overpriced. The resort course is less well kept and somewhat flat and uninteresting, so its best to stick to the big course. There are good practice facilities. Our first night was to restaurant we know in Alvor - taxis 8-10 euro good value (we avoid hiring a car). Other nights we ate in as there is the upmarket Grill open each night, an Italian open 3 nights, a beach restaurant, and a buffet on the other nights. We are not evening buffet lovers but the one night in Sagres was excellent both meal and staff attentiveness, plus being warm enough to sit outside. The Italian restaurant had good choice but insufficient staff for numbers booked. Two waiters in tee shirts (5 star??) assisted for a while by someone seconded by the bar were overwhelmed. At no time in the two plus hours we were there did any manager appear to assess or more importantly assist. My wife was disappointed to find her fritto misto starter was of assorted frozen battered seafood in an area of plentiful fresh seafood. Some check table cloths and an Italian theme might have added atmosphere to a restaurant which was originally German themed. My carbonara and our mains were good. Ice cream took half an hour (staffing!) One night we went to Penina's beach restaurant at Alvor in their shuttle. It was somewhat soulless and lacked any real welcome or atmosphere. Having reserved, on arrival we were left hanging about for a short while before being directed to a table in the back corner of the terrace. We asked for an unoccupied table at the front but were told they were reserved - but not for hotel residents when they arrived later! Do hotel guests not get some degree of precedence? The Grill - we had such good memories. Clearly this needs an injection of enthusiasm and coordination. Presently, apart from Marianna(?) the head waiter and waiters were disinterested and chefs did not seem to serve items together. Rescue is on the way - on our first of two visits a new Maitre'd, Duerte was on his third day. He has trained in Galway, Seabourn luxury cruises which we have been on several times with high standards, and London. He has a task in front of him as the offerings, particularly fish, are good (the steak provider needs changing), but conversation with him twice was reassuring that he realises the problems and can tackle them. Pedro and the bar staff are very good, with pleasant live entertainment several evenings (and a happy hour). The clientele is a mix of grey top couples (us) and fours, and groups of mainly male, but some lady, golfers. Understandably these can get a bit noisy at times but its mainly golf, heat and beer into the evening noise and not overly obtrusive. They tend to go off to Alvor to eat and club. There was one group of exceptionally unsocial Scottish golfers to whom security had to speak, and we were pleased to see the back of them - why are such groups always from the UK. So that's why four rather than five stars. A few problems to iron out. We like Penina and will no doubt return - and hopefully to give 5 stars next time! I just hope JJF are willing to put more in than to try and take too much out. Collapse

Right let's start with the positives. Authentic Portuguese style hotel , set in beautiful grounds. High standards of cleanliness and exceptional pool area . Wonderful breakfast buffet. Staff discreet but attentive . Rooms light at airy ( we had a studio , great views ) Like most golf resorts the hotel charges double for almost everything you could get in nearby towns . (Nothing too unusual there )Communial areas looking a little dated . I noted the hotels replies from previous reviewers, they have the facilities of a 5 star resort but they must acknowledge customers have realistic expectations of 5 star standard ( we are more well travelled ) sadly Penina needs to improve in areas . Five star resorts offer a turn down service at night ,Spa facilities (steam room and sauna ) that are free to residents and of a modern and contemporary design. Now onto the courses , they are not exceptional by any means ( a good test of golf without being overly difficult). The Championship course certainly not of tournament standard . Both courses are quite scruffy in lots of areas and in need of improvement. Spanish courses are of a much higher standard . Played championship course on a Friday and paired with a couple of competent golfers , unfortunately it appeared that not all those. on the course had appropriate handicaps. The failure to verify handicaps ( don't just ask ) is causing excessive time of rounds and the course is being damaged . (Divots not replaced and pitch marks not repaired) resulting in 5hr plus rounds clearly the norm. Would I come back??? Sadly not enough positives. Collapse

The hotel and the course are very dated. Hotel states itself as 5 star which by modern day standards it is miles away from. Bar prices are 5 star and the rest. If you should visit and only earn average wages buy water elsewhere as they charge €5 for just over a pint! I discussed this with a manager who stated that they could justify the prices because it is a 5 star hotel. Perhaps it was in the 60's - 70's Collapse

Like most guests at the hotel, I was there to play golf. The hotel has a beautiful setting and sundowners on the terrace are special. The staff are excellent and the beds comfortable. The hotel is a little dated but in good decorative order.

We arrived at the hotel late due to a flight delay but our rooms were not ready. We had to cancel and rearrange our original tee time as we couldn’t access our luggage. This meant we only played 9 holes when our package was for 18 The hotel needs some refurbishment. It seemed to be the most complicated pay system I have encountered once you manage to attract the attention of the waiting staff!!! Some of whom were quite surly. We were given a couple of bottles of bubbly to compensate for the 9 holes of golf. We are in the grill twice the first time being without incident. The second time was another story! First of all they had no record of our booking. The service was appalling and my Tournedos was so tough I couldn’t eat it. It took 3 hours to receive and eat 1 course!! After speaking to the general manager we did not pay anything at all but this wasn’t how we wanted to spend our last night The staff at the golf pro shop however were very efficient Collapse
