Great championship course. A really good test for the lower handicap golfer of the back tees. Warm up and practice facilities are superb, but range balls massively over priced, so if you take kids, you could spend a fortune on their practice. Pity that they are greedy with that as the hotel (staff, pool and food) are all excellent. Only saw the marshall on the course once in 4 rounds, and it was slow. Don't expect a round in under 4 hours, and some will take 5. Course is up there in my top 10 all time. Some holes you really have to think about off the tea. Collapse

We had not visited Penina for about 30 years. Pleasantly, not much has changed. It has retained the traditional look and the staff aim to please. We were greeted with glass of port and news of an upgrade to a suite overlooking the pool. Luggage was promptly delivered by the bell boy. The suite was spacious, well equipped and comfortable. Bedroom, bathroom, toilet, sitting room, two balconies and hall. Very peaceful and charming. Excellent maid service. Breakfast was a welcome buffet and included in the very reasonable room rate. Delicious orange juice, fresh fruits and hot items including eggs cooked to order. The coffee could be better and we sometimes found it difficult to order a refill. Lunch at Henry Cottons or the pool is excellent with a good choice at a reasonable price. No rip offs here. Dinner was a real treat, whether in the Grill where flambes were served, or in the main dining room (Sagres) or in the excelllent Italian named l'arecchino. Booking here is essential. Wines are excellent and cater for a variety of pockets. Most of all, the resort is not only geared towards golfers but also families with an excellent kids club with pool, trained staff, etc, etc. Superb value considering that children eat free up to 12 years old off a special menu when dining with parents. The swimming pool is very large but not cold. It features two shallow parts with a deeper section in the middle. Entertainment is somewhat limited. There are two lovely grand pianos which were never touched during our stay - a pity. The Keyboard player whilst not the greatest Elvis impersonator meant well and put his whole heart into livening up the audience! All in all a fabulous resort for relaxing and of course playing golf. There are many other leisure facilitites but the weather was so good we spent most of the time by the pool! Would we return...most definitely. Collapse

Stayed unexpectedly for a night whilst visiting family. The hotel is an established Golf resort and the grounds are beautiful but somehow the hotel and staff seem to "Miss the mark". The hotel interior and the room we had were just a bit tired looking and not reflecting it's 5* status. It was a pleasant enough stay, rooms reasonably priced but drinks very expensive and poolside service poor. We would return but have lower expectations. Collapse

We booked it for the price we got, when looking for a 5* hotel. It was the best decision made. The rooms are spacious, comfortable beds and pillows. The furniture is old, but perfectly acceptable. Great, big bathroom, well lightened. It has (I believe) the biggest swimming pool in Algarve. The surroundings are well protected from the wind. Shadows from big trees in the shallow part of the pool (from 17h on). The employees are very nice, all the time. The kids club is very big, with swimming pool, big shadow area, 3 employees all the time. They have reptiles and birds shows every week. Also free golf lesson. Restaurants are very good, with healthy food. The Grill is great. The buffet "Sagres" is good, but not all the time. The pool bar is very good also. Children (until 12) don't pay any meal, not even beverages. Cleaness in the room could be much better. WiFi doesn't work in every room, but it is broadband. The surroundings (golf course) and the walkable path (4 km) that stretches through it is formidable. It is a 50 years old hotel and that's the best part. Driving range, many greens and the golf course are just a step outside. Breakfast is great. It is presently the best deal for a 5* in Algarve if you have children, and we've been to many of them. A must. Collapse
