Hotel has good location for shopping and leisure. Whilst I was there on business the office I was visiting was only a 10minute walk. Whilst the hotel advertises discounted parking this is only if you arrive after 5pm and leave before 9am. Not much use for a leisure break. Staff were friendly. The breakfast was ok although the orange juice was over diluted and the coffee weak. Room was great size. Be sure to ask for a sea view or you may end up looking on to empty land Collapse

The Park Inn by Radisson, Southend is an imposing building. With the original name “Palace” still in place, this prestigious and long-standing Southend hotel has maintained its stature after being taken over by the Radisson group. It is located on the cliff at the end of the pier, right next to the town’s main shopping centre. The insides are modern and tasteful with the restaurant and bar enjoying fantastic views over the estuary. When booking on Experia, we asked for two adjacent or adjoining rooms, if possible, and were not disappointed. The rooms were adjoining, with a substantial double door separating them, a further co-ordinating touch being that one room had a walk-in shower, the other a bath. Both were very spacious with a large double and large sofa bed in each and still a great feeling of space. Two large windows in each room faced the sea and the natural light of the place was enhanced by all the lights always being left switched on by staff (why? A little notice asked us to consider the Planet when not dirtying too many towels, so there is evidently some inconsistency in the environmental policy). The furniture, fittings and carpets were all really high quality and the overall feeling was one of comfort and space. The beds were comfortably firm but would be improved by thick mattress protectors, especially covering the join between two single beds. This high quality made the lack of maintenance (of what is surely a renovation dating back very few years) even less understandable. The large windows were very hard to open and, when they did, impossible to close. The key cards kept malfunctioning and the little holders for the tubes of liquid soap kept falling off the wall. There was a light switch which had dangerously fallen to bits exposing live wires and a disconnected toilet seat. I could not even bring myself to complain – in the length of time we were there, it could not have been fixed and there seemed little point moving to another room with almost certainly the same or equivalent problems. And, since the problems were so numerous, I did not feel it my place to inform the management of their failings. There was a TV, safe, internet which worked and a kettle in each room, although I would have liked a greater selection of teas and some biscuits. Breakfast was nice. Not the biggest choice I have experienced, but each of them items was fresh, tasty, correctly cooked and well-presented with a few unusual extras like fresh carrot juice and roasted butternut squash on one day. We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant once. This was slightly less impressive as our order was confused. However, they put things right as quickly as they could, and the meal was not over-priced as this kind of hotel usually is. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful (especially on reception), although I take a dim view of being told that I could not have the key to my room for ten minutes as the person responsible was on a rest break. One final gripe…. and this really did spoil the fun a bit. The only car park is the public one opposite the hotel. This means that, if you leave your car there all day, you will pay an additional £15 on top of your bill – something which the hotel fails to make clear on its website. I contacted Radisson customer services twice and they failed to respond. However, the Hotel Manager took a sympathetic view and assisted us. I suggest all customers complain about this poor practice until they come up with a better solution. We had a two-day break in Southend and thoroughly enjoyed it, including our stay in the Park Inn. I feel that a lot of money has been invested in making this high quality establishment; now they need to invest a little more in the local management. Collapse
