We travel around the world and always stay in luxury hotels and we were expecting a lot from this hotel based on the owner's profile. We were very disappointed. The hotel is very well appointed and the staff are pleasant enough. However, we would not class this hotel as being 5-star when we compare with other 5-stars around the world. We were disappointed not to have a minibar or tea/coffee facilities in the rooms (we were charged euros5.50 for a cup of tea). We also had to pay euro 25 extra each to use the hot tub - this was after paying over euros 800 for two nights. The dinner was very nice but the breakfast was just average. We asked for brown toast but were informed that only brown soda bread or white toast was available. To my mind they should have gone to the shop and bought a brown loaf since we were paying so much. I cut my knee trying to get into the bath with the overhead shower and had to ask for the first aid kit . From it I opened a tube of antiseptic cream which was out of date in 2005 !- when I said this to the concierge he went on the defensive saying it was another staff members responsibility -and didn't even bother to see if he would get me a replacement. Very overrated. Collapse

We had blue book vouchers and chose to spend them at this hotel and I'm glad we did. Firstly the service and hospitality of the staff is truly exceptional. From the bar manager to reception to dining areas, I was really impressed by the professionalism of the staff. Properly trained staff who clearly take pride in their job and know how to run a hotel . Our arrival was lovely with the staff coming out to the Car park to meet us and help us with bags and although our room was not ready as we were quite early, we left our bags in the hotel and strolled down the town . When we arrived back our bags were already in our room and check in was seamless. We waited for nothing and wanted for nothing from that moment. Secondly ... And the reason we initially chose to go to this hotel is the location. It's rare to find a blue book property located in a lively town , that has fine dining , great spa and is also in a spectacular setting overlooking the bay. It's actually a super location with the Main Street of the town literally two minutes walk from the hotel. They are also beautiful woodland walks within the grounds of the hotel if you wish to avoid the town . Best of both worlds. Our room was beautiful - spacious, warm and comfortable overlooking the water. the breakfast is great - with full table service . No queuing for the dodgy toaster here! And the coffee is excellent. There were a number of cosy open fires burning around the hotel which really added to the warmth and appeal of the hotel. At night the bar manager was so efficient and friendly and had even remembered our drinks order from the previous night . Usually old style hotels are not my thing and I favour modern hotels but this a different experience with quality of service and staff leaving a lasting impression. Lastly I would say the hospitality and friendliness of the local people we met in Kenmare was overwhelming . I would have no qualms about coming to this hotel or town as a single traveller. Stroll into any pub or restaurant and pull up a seat at the bar and you will be well looked after. We met some great characters in Murchu's on Main Street where everyone was enjoying Cheltenham races! There were a small number of families, including small children staying in the hotel and I think it would be a really nice break with a young baby particularly. The staff think of the minor details including a baby changing unit stocked with wipes, powder and towels outside the main bathroom . Likewise there's lots of areas to relax and stroll with prams . Highly recommend. Collapse

Overall we were disappointed with this hotel. On the plus side, the staff were pleasant and the food was of a high standard - especially the tasting menu in the main dining room. The spa area and pool were lovely. Oh but the rooms.... they are in need of a major refurbishment. They are dated, dark and dingy. We had to change rooms as the first one had a very strange smell and a strange noise all during the night which turned out to be a kitchen extractor duct in the wall behind our bed. The bathroom was very basic with a very low over bath shower which was impossible to shower under without bending. Our second bathroom was somewhat better - the extractor fans did not work in either bathroom. Certainly the location of the hotel is excellent but it's unacceptable to have to pay five star prices for three star accommodation. Collapse
