There seems to be a common theme with Irish hotels suggesting they are 5 star hotels. I think maybe the hotel assigns them themselves but they are definitely not on a world ranking of 5 star hotels. This hotel is in dire need of an update. The food was awful. Our room was extremely outdated and used. Our door handle was broken and found outside in the back garden. The heating system in the room was an old fashioned actual heater. The room was also very old and uncomfortable. We could not sleep because we could hear everything above and below the with the fellow guests. The service was very slow. I would say the only positive slightly was the spa but for the price the hotel is charging it is definitely outrageous and by no means a 5 star. I would say know 3 star hotel. The hotel needs to look into a massive update renovation and new chef. Collapse
Old, out of date, understaffed

This hotel in Town is a bit outdated. The wifi is sketchy, the showers aren't easy to get the right temp, the door locks are old fashioned and not very secure. There isn't enough furniture in the rooms to be comfortable. The outlets and mirror locations make it impossible for a woman to do her hair. The decor is a couple of decades out of fashion. There is limited staff available. They do work hard but that doesn't always help. Time for a radical overhaul here! It is a beautiful old hotel on beautiful grounds and in a great location. Collapse
Over priced, outdated, not nice for family travel.

My husband, 2 year old son, and I stayed there for 4 nights in Sept. for part of a 11 day vacation in Ireland. We travel a lot and stay at a lot of nice hotels and chose this one bc it was recommended by Fodor's and had many good online reviews. We should've listened to the negative ones before paying $500 a night for this place. Pros: Location--2 min walk to restaurants and shops in Kenmare, drive to Killarney Natl Park and the Ring of Kerry. Grounds and public spaces-- beautiful grounds with lots of trails for walking, next to the lake. (You don't need to stay here to use the trails). Dining rooms and sitting rooms are really pretty with views and fireplaces. Service -- helpful and friendly for the most part. Lots of activities on site. Food -- tasty and reasonably priced Spa -- world class Kids -- they have high chairs, cribs and seem to welcome young families visiting. Welcomed my son w a toy and cookie with his name on it. Cons: Rooms -- We were on the first floor of the unattractive new section built in the 60s. The room is simply dingy: peeling wall paper, mismatching charmless furniture, dimly lit, faded murky green carpet. The plumbing is seriously in need of updating. Our bathroom smelled like the gutters and needed airing for a couple of hours to get rid of the smell, which is inconvenient when it's 50 F outside and there's no radiator in the bathroom for heat. The hotel said that this is just how bathrooms in Ireland smell.... which hasn't been our experience. There are none of the standard amenities like tea or coffee makers, or mini fridge. Feels more like a 100 than 500 euro room. Concierge -- we had a very helpful guy on our first day. Then, we had a lady who told us a lot of totally wrong things in a very confident way which caused us to waste half a day and miss seeing a lot of stuff. The person who cleaned our room forgot something everyday. One day, he/she forgets to leave us water. Another, there are dirty wet rags left on the floor. Kids: they put us in a wing in what's essentially a basement that's half submerged on one side, facing a rock garden and wall that blocks all the light on the other side. Our wing had three rooms all set up for families (bunk beds, etc). I think they try to keep all the kids away from the other guests. That's understandable, but also very annoying since we're not old in advance (in which case we wouldn't have stayed here) or get a discount for staying in significantly inferior rooms. I've never faced this in any other establishment. Similarly, in the dining rooms, they'll only put high chairs by the tables in the back. So you can never have a good view if you go with little kids. We found this quite unreasonable and pointless. Comparison: we stayed at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin right before. Same price range, but the Merrion is what you expect to get -- a notch or two higher in quality than the Park Hotel. If you stay, definitely ask for a sunny room on the second floor with a view (they're very pretty). We wouldn't stay here again. It might be a bit better without kids, but I think it'd still be very over priced for what you get. There seem to be many luxury hotels renovated from old country homes around here. I'd look at the other options. Collapse

We spent three nights at the Park Hotel last week and loved it. It is a great location from which to see the Ring of Kerry, Ring of Dingle, Killarney, etc. (and even play golf at Waterville) but you may not want to leave the hotel once you get there. The service is exceptional, the food very good, and the spa is world class. (My wife is a spa junkie and she thinks Samas is possibly the best spa she's visited anywhere in the world.) A slightly comical but serious cautionary note: The towel warmers get very hot and the switch to turn them is unlabelled making it easy to activate inadvertently. I gave myself a fairly serious burn on an embarrassing spot when I backed into it. Nuff said... :-) Collapse

Although the decor of this purpose-built Victorian hotel is perhaps a little tired now, the hotel is service driven and the staff don't disappoint. We spent two nights here and couldn't fault anyone who works there. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a view of the bay and the hotel's grazing horse (do find him a friend, Park Hotel, he looks so lonely), but it felt a bit 1980s and could do with freshening up. We enjoyed the 7-course tasting menu with pared wines in the fine dining restaurant on our first evening and it was outstanding. We could barely move afterwards, however, so would probably opt for the 5-course version next time! We used the outdoor spa pool next day, which was billed as private (at €25 per person, we assumed it would be) but which we had to share with four other people. Slightly disappointing, but we still enjoyed our water pummelling. Kenmare is a pretty town to explore on foot, then we had dinner in the hotel's other restaurant, overlooking the terrace, which was less grand but very tasty. Service throughout our stay - from the lad who carried our bags, to receptionists, restaurant waiting staff, housekeeping and the person who kindly and unexpectedly cleaned my car windscreen (nice touch!) - was exceptional. And that's what you pay for at an hotel such as this. Collapse
