"This is really so good" were the words with which my greater authority (who has very high standards) prefaced most comments about the Park. Indeed it was, with one notable exception. The welcome from the concierge in the grounds as I parked the car was warm and fulsome. He took the bags and led us to the reception where check in was speedy and courteous. Dinner arrangements were finalised without fuss. Dinner itself was a masterpiece. The dining room is set out mostly for couples with some larger tables in the centre. It is the first dining room I have been in where every diner has a view to die for. Not one seat faced a wall. The menu was the tasting menu where diners could opt for five or seven courses with accompanying wines, if desired. We started with a nettle and squash soup accompanied by fresh kitchen baked breads. This was followed by a crab meat salad, with the crab meat wrapped in a gelatin envelope, which kept the meat manageable. The next course was a scallop dish with pomegranate. The scallops, although small, were full of flavour and perfectly cooked. The duck breast was was also a delight, served with a selection of vegetables. Desert didn't quite match the standards set earlier. The mango mouse lacked the lightness one would expect as it was served as a standalone block. The accompanying coconut ice cream, however, was a perfect foil to the sweetness of the mango. For the seven course enthusiasts there was also ham hock and apple pie to tickle the fancy All in all a tasty meal that had been conceived with care and cooked with class. The accommodation was what one would expect of a five-star resort hotel decorated in the traditional sense. Our room was the result of joining two decent sized rooms together. The large bed occupied one half and a sofa and chairs the other half. The bed was very comfortable dressed with very fine bed linen. The notable exception to the high standards was the shower. It was an added fitting to the bath. The controls were a mystery until I eventually figured out which tap was for the shower. There was also a temperature control, which was clearly an independent spirit. The shower temperature fluctuated from cold to moderately warm, even with the control set at its maximum. Breakfast is waiter served with the usual offerings of cereal selection, juices, fruits and hot meals. The hake tasted wonderful and was so fresh I was surprised it was not still twitching. It was served with a wedge of lemon. A serving of tomato or mushroom would have taken the bare look off the plate. Checkout was efficient and we were quickly on our way. One final touch was a little card on the windscreen to tell us it had been washed so our views of Kerry wouldn't be spoiled. Thoughtful and typical of The Park Kenmare. Collapse
Well worth the splurge.

When we travel abroad, we are somewhat budget conscious. We mainly stay in mid range hotels but try to find one really nice place to stay during our trip. The park hotel was incredible. During a recent visit to Kenmare, booked afternoon tea at Park Hotel. Staff are professional and attentive without being intrusive. Presentation of the Afternoon Tea was 5* and was very tasty and enjoyable. It was very good value and we opted to have Afternoon Tea with Prosecco. Only feedback to improve the experience would be, our leftovers to take away was presented in a tin foil dish similar to those used in Take Away's. At the Westbury in Dublin, left overs from Afternoon Tea are presented in a beautiful bag to take home, very classy and 5*. Also, using plastic chairs for children is not in keeping with the hotels 5* presentation. A suggestion would be to have one of the local artists who hand carve wooden furniture to make a bespoke chair(s) more fitting for the hotel and its standing. Collapse

We received a very warm welcome on arrival to the hotel. The 5* venue lived up to our expectations in that it is a beautifully refurbished old style hotel. Our visit was to enjoy dinner at the restaurant on Saturday night , and we chose the "Tasting Menu" . All courses were beautifully presented and were delicious in all elements. However, we were a little disappointed with the portions served, in fully understanding it was a tasting menu, it fell short in this area. The dining room was very quiet and some light music would have helped the atmosphere. Its a shame to have other conversations overheard in the silence. Our waiting servers were very pleasant and contributed to our enjoyment of the evening. Overall it takes my rating from excellent down to very good. Collapse

We stayed here last summer for 2 nights - the weather was lovely and really Kenmare is gorgeous on a sunny day. Mid afternoon on day one, we went to the bar - feeling great about life and decided to have champagne - this is the Park Hotel after all. The bar man was a sullen youth, who was unhappy when we requested the wine list (I'll have to bring it from the dining room), but eventually arrived with the list. I ordered a bottle of non-vintage champagne, very pricy at Euro130, and after about half an hour was served up the bottle, warm, on a cooler (not an ice bucket!) which was already half filled with ice - ludicrous, and more sullenness from the bar man. We left him at it, and having complained to the porter (a kind gentleman who seemed to be on duty most of the time we were there - don't know when he slept) were eventually sent up the said bottle, still warm, but this time in an old fashioned ice bucket. The bar itself was like a scene from Fawlty Towers - no customers, threadbare carpet, zero atmosphere, and non-existent service. Our room was spacious, with very shabby old furniture - simply old and second hand, not antique by any means. The bathroom fittings were poor, with exposed pipework. The final surprise on our first day was to discover a plastic bag of stinking dirty underwear in the back of the wardrobe - no idea how long it had been there - and the ubiquitous porter came to take it away. We dined in Kenmare, had ourselves a good old time, but on our return to the hotel shortly after midnight found the door locked - it took several minutes for the night porter to arrive and let us in. Said night porter was a young French man, quite obnoxious, most reluctant to serve us a night cap - after one drink we went to bed. Bedding and sheets are good - the standard we expected. At 8am next day, still sleep in bed, we were alarmed to be awoken by the porter in the hall of the room asking loudly "where do you want the fan"? What fan? He bade a hasty retreat encourage by a shout from me and that was the end of that. Breakfast was excellent both days - good food, lovely local service. The property itself was dark and shabby in the public areas, and also in the bedroom. My room cost 500euro per night - 5 star price but 2 star quality. Never again - it has taken me a year to recover the patience to write this review. On a positive note, we left some clothing articles behind us, which upon advising the hotel were sent on to us immediately. Collapse
