My first trip to Paris outside of CDG and I'm here at the Marriott Opera in Paris and have just experienced racial profiling. It is not the first time and because of my travels I'm sure it won't be the last. I have always used Marriott Hotels for years because of the comfort and courtesy and because of all the money and time spent on them I have earned the Executive privilege. I was the first person to enter the lounge of the hotel mentioned above and after about 5 minutes the woman decides to ask me for my room number. 6 people walked in right after me (that did not look like me) and she never once opened her mouth to ask for their room number. I brought this to the attention of the front desk and they told me it is policy for her to ask for the room number. I told them they are full of it because she didnt ask anyone else for their room number and how would I have gotten in without a key. Marriott Opera will not see me again. Collapse

We stayed for 7 nights. Our group had 4 rooms. Everything was perfect. We ate in the restaurant and spent time in the Executve Lounge. We interacted with the concierge desk on multiple occasions. We also spent a number of evenings in the hotel bar. The staff across all areas was accommodating and friendly. Our rooms were immaculate and well maintained. Location was awesome. We will return when we are in Paris again. Top notch!!! Collapse
Not up to Marriott standards

Firstly the good points - this hotel is well placed with a metro station only a few hundred metres away and the major stores, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps just a little bit further. The area has lots of other European chain stores nearby too, such as Sephora, Benetton, Celio, Minnelli etc so it's a good location if you want to shop. The hotel is clearly an old building and it has been renovated to modern standards with care. Our room was spacious and well laid out and we were pleased to see it had a separate shower. Showers over the bath are dangerous as people can slip when climbing out. We were staying there for my wife's birthday and the hotel kindly left a small bottle of champagne and fruit in our room for her. This was a nice touch, but as is described below it was the only time we felt the hotel cared. Now the down side. It is noisy hotel as it is on a busy road and though the rooms are double glazed, it doesn't solve the problem. Currently, there is a construction site on the opposite side of the road that begins work early in the day too, but I guess this is only temporary. Also the walls are wafer thin so noise passes from room to room. So when the people in the adjacent room decided to have a fight at 1am, we heard everything. The morning after the conflict in the next room we were woken at 7am by banging and screeching sounds from above. We later found this was housekeeping rearranging the room above us. Surely anyone with a modicum of common sense would plan activities such as this to be carried later in the day if they are expected to generate such a lot of noise. There was a shaving mirror in the bathroom which initially my wife planned to use to apply some of her make-up. However, it was smeared with finger prints when we arrived and still like that when we left four days later. What else do they fail to clean properly? The buffet breakfast was poor. A choice of only two cheeses in France (one of which was Swiss!) was a surprise. The coffee is dispensed by a machine and although it makes decent coffee, including espresso, only large mugs are available. Putting an espresso in a large mug guarantees it is cold by the time you get back to your table. Not providing espresso cups shows a lack of attention to detail. Cups and saucers for tea would be a nice touch too. In fact cups and saucers for everything would be better - mugs should not been seen in nice hotels. Extra is charged for omelettes, poached eggs etc that most other hotels are happy to do as part of the breakfast package. What I found most disturbing was the way the cooked buffet was presented. There were four containers, one for scrambled eggs, one for tomatoes and sautéed potatoes and a third for pork sausages and bacon. The fourth container contained veal sausages and mushrooms . As a vegetarian I was appalled to see meat and vegetables in the same container, especially as only one pair of serving tongs was also provided. When challenged the staff told me they only had four containers. Surely an organisation the size of the Marriott Group can afford another container. However, a better idea would be to stop serving breakfast in the joke of an executive lounge which would provide another container for the main restaurant. So if you only want to shop or hop on the metro this hotel will suit you. If you want the finer touches that show the management and staff care about their guests this is not the place for you. I stayed here for 3 nights in February and found it to be an incredible location, excellent customer service, and the view of the Eiffel Tower from the Executive Lounge each morning for breakfast was amazing. Bed was so comfortable and the room was clean, roomy for Paris standards and larger than most Paris hotels where I have stayed. Nespresso machine in the room was also a nice addition. I found the service to be attentive. Our room was not ready when we arrived early in the morning, but they quickly preoared it while we ate breakfast in the lounge and found us to alert us. I will be returning to Paris again in the fall and we will stay here again. Collapse
