For those who have read my reviews, you can usually tell when a hotel has left a good impression on me as I take the time to write a full (sometimes lengthy review) and I'm glad to say that The Palace Hotel located in Sliema is one of those rare hotels that have truly impressed me. A 5 star hotel rating in Europe usually can't be compared to say a 5 star hotel in the Caribbean for example. However, The Palace Hotel (part of the AX Hotel Group) truly does deserve the 5 stars accredited to it. Specifically, this hotel surprised me with a few things I have never received in terms of hotel amenities but I'll come on to that. The hotel might be tricky to find but only because this is the way Malta roads are but most taxi drivers familiar with Sliema seem to know where the hotel is and if not, try using St James Hospital as a reference point as its only a couple of hundred metres from the hospital. The promenade/waterfront is only a 7-10 minute walk away and there are plenty of bars and food places around. The area (as well as all of Malta) is very safe and you wont be disturbed by the traffic or crowds nearer to the waterfront so for me, the location was a perfect balance between being far enough from the hub to remain tranquil, but not too far as to be far to get to. Hotel staff were very polite throughout and after check in, I was taken to and shown around my room by a member of staff who was not a porter (which is usually what you dread in terms of not having any small change on arrival for a tip). The fact that I was shown around my room by someone who didnt offer to take my bags (I didnt require this so for anyone who would have liked their bags taken up I'm sure it could have been requested) and therefore didnt expect a tip was the first clue that this was a very different hotel. The room itself was very large and spacious, although in my case, I think I was given an accessible room hence perhaps having a bit more space than perhaps the other rooms have. Although I booked for myself, there were three single beds (which didn't bother me at all) and I was asked if I wanted any removed which I declined. There was a large study desk and moderately sized outdoor balcony with a table and two chairs which comfortably fit on the balcony. I didnt have a sea view, and in fact, the view was of the forecourt area, so nothing spectacular, but either way I appreciated having a balcony to sit out on and relax! The room also had a stocked fridge (additional cost on consumption of the beer, wine, sparkling water etc) but one point is that [the fridge's internal temperature seemed a little warm and there didnt seem to be a way to change it. As such, it took quite a long time for my store bought beverages (Scotts supermarket just 200m away) to cool down]. The wardrobes in the room (which were clearly very new) had 2 dressing gowns and 3 sets of new slippers to make use of which was a nice touch. What really did surprise me was the amenities in the room. Not only the slippers and dressing gowns, but also an electronic safe (at no charge to use) and shoe polish. In the bathroom, which had two sinks, a rain shower and separate bath tub, there were also the expected shower gels, shampoos and body lotion, but I was pleasantly surprised to also find that shaving kits (with shaving cream and disposal razors), nail files, and a dental kit with toothbrushes and toothpaste were also provided. Perhaps I haven't been to a 5 star hotel in a while, but this was the first time I've been to any hotel and been provided with a shaving kit and dental kit. Also provided were 3 hygenically wrapped plastic hair combs. Now ok, they were plastic but again, I was still impressed to even see that they had been provided! The only bathroom issue (which is completely forgivable in the overall context) is that there was no shelf in the rain shower unit to place the provided shampoos/shower gel etc, so I ended up having to keep these on the floor while showering. This might just be an oversight, and may not even be an issue in other rooms as I was in an accessible room. Under my business booking, I was given the option of having one buffet meal during my stay (breakfast was included for every day however). Dinners in the hotel are themed nights, I dined during the Grill Night and was impressed by the selection of grilled meats (beef medallions, chicken medallions, ribs, maltese sausage, grilled prawn skewers, grilled salmon and tuna along with plenty of sides from fresh salad, to couscous, rice, a wide selection of cheese) - There was such a large variety of food to suit everyone's taste and dietary requirements and I never saw anything running low either and if it did, it was replenished with a fresh (hot) new portion straight from the kitchen within moments. Drinks were reasonably priced too. Breakfast in the mornings is a similar affair in that, there is a large variety and selection, from hot breakfast items (bacon, beef or pork sausages, beans eggs pancakes etc) to more healthy choices such as fresh fruit, cereals, pastries, yogurts, breads and conserves. Again, if you don't find something to eat and enjoy, then you;d have to be a very picky person! The pool deck on the 9th floor is amazing with a gorgeous almost 360 degree view of the surrounding area and a great view from the infiniti pool. There's an outdoor pool bar serving drinks and snacks/lunch throughout the day and the 9th floor is also where you will find the fine dining restaurant TemptAsian. I didnt eat here unfortunately, but it looked impressive. You'll also find an indoor bar here, and it really is worth coming up here in the evening and either having a drink inside the bar, or outside on the beautifully lit pool deck. Although the TemptAsian restaurant may be pricey (its a very highly rated restaurant in Malta) the drinks are fairly reasonably priced. I bought a Long Island Iced Tea for €8. There is also a spa and gym however, I did not manage to visit these although I can only imagine that it would have been equally impressive. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel for couples, business travel but perhaps not necessarily for families with younger children, only because I'm not certain the hotel is necessarily set on catering for families with young children. That said, I don't think young children would not enjoy their time here if only staying for a few days but if a week or more, you may wish to consider a hotel with more facilities for younger children. I really can't fault this hotel at all. It's very well maintained, the staff are friendly and helpful and the facilities and amenities are top rate. I only hope that this is maintained because I certainly will return again for my next business trip to Malta without a question. Collapse

This is a fine hotel but is let down by little things that a 5* shouldn’t, i.e. our refreshments tray was left with dirty mugs, ok we could rinse them but we are 5*. The bath towels are too small, as are the robes; we borrowed towels from the pool which are far better. There was a small hole in our bed quilt cover, but you do have the option to have fresh bedding every day. The bed was too soft for me personally. Then there’s the Asian restaurant t on the roof. This is a must for any guest, great choice, well-cooked and presented with great service all watched over by Mark the maitre d’ with super views over the harbour and Valletta. Fireworks are a national pastime and we were treated every night. The roof pool is fine, big enough to swim, again with city views and we were well looked after by Ash with lunch, drinks and ice creams. The Hotel is far enough from the bars and restaurants’ of the harbour to not be affected by the noise but there is a 10 minute uphill walk back. The reception is fine, friendly and welcoming, and then there’s Andrew the concierge, he’s there when you taxi stops, helping with cases and he makes you feel like a long lost friend, surely he’s one of this hotels best assets, would we return, absolutely. My husband and I have just returned from a 7 day holiday staying at The Palace. The hotel is lovely, very clean, staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. Our room, a superior double, was on the 5th floor, very spacious and the view was lovely. We were on half board and enjoyed both the breakfasts and evening meals. The Asian restaurant was exceptional and well worth a visit. It was my husbands birthday when we were there and the cake they made for him was delicious! We will definitely return to The Palace but next time under our own steam rather than via a travel company. Collapse

Well what can I say after booking a week, half board. Whilst breakfasts were really good because 100% of guests would consume breakfast those of us who were half board only had one of several restaurants were we could eat in the price of our holiday. The food was cold, tasteless, meat was tough nothing complimented anything else the whole experience was not of a five star hotel not even a two star. On two evenings our restaurant was closed and we were able to eat at no extra cost at any of the other restaurants . First we visited Asian truly fab and then italian again very good so why was this standard of food not available to us. Drinks were through the roof 8 to 9 euros for a pint and half a shandy.
