First of all I love Cape Town and I love One&Only Cape Town. We used to stay in this hotel with our kids a few years ago and few years in a row. For last 4 years we did other itinerary, so had no chance to see the changes. Let me compare how it used to be and how it is these days. 1. Service is still very good, people are nice and proffesional, and few of them still working in the hotel as years ago. 2. Kids room : there is still Michelle who used to take care of our kids, and I believe the quality remains the same. 3. We stayed in Island room . Eventhough the booking and the receptionist said we have mountain view, there was actually no view at all , room 616 is facing into the windows of opposite appartment house. I want to believe that this wasn t because we didn t book via hotel directly, but via one of the booking sites. Sometimes it just happened that you simply get the room in booked category but the lowest quality.Next time we will stay in Marine room for less money and beautiful view, as we used to have before. 4. At the time of our arrival we had fruits in our room, but not fresh at all and very smelly extra duvet, we asked for extra one before arriving. 5. Room definitely need some reconstruction, the walls outside on the balcony and the armchair in the room as well. 6. Service around the pool was excellent. You can rent a special double bed for 6500 rands peŕ´day included seafood platter and champagne ( during our 4 days stay we haven t seen anybody to rent it). 7. There are 2 places for breakfast Reuben s and newly served in Isola restaurant by the pool. Isola is fine if you want small and private breakfast, more choices you get in Reuben s. And again , breakfast these days is more "cost effective", so definitely less choices than it used to be. We always memorised breakfast in Reuben s , it was always special, and after years breakfast here is just ordinary thing ( ok, you have dim sum and oysters, and that s it). Many of the things are a la carte. 8. At the time of check out we asked if we can leave the room at 5 p.m. instead of 11. a.m. because of our late flight. We knew that there was not only our room not booked that day but also others were not taken. The hotel manager asked us 3500 rands per 6 hours. I understand that this is a service and we should definitely pay for it, but during our stay we spent about 5000 USD in 4 days in the hotel and little personal touch or attitude of management in terms of letting the clients for extra 6 hours ( once there is a possibilty) for free before long flight to Europe would be highly appreciated. 9. Years ago the hotel had a nice service: a laundry service on the first day for free. It is not anymore available. Could be nice, because we usually end our trips in South Africa in Cape Town. 10. Nobu restaurant - a nightmare it used to be years ago and this didn t changed since that time. It is only average Asian restaurant , we gave it a chance again for dinner and 2 of 3 dishes my husband wished to order from menu were not available. Rest of the food was nothing special. 11. I like the Bastien pedicure, didn t change and it is still good ( unfortunately not available legendary One&Only Red polish any more). Reflex foot massage was also excellent. 12. Hotel is also fighting with rats, running through the terrace late evening. Overall we still love the hotel maybe because of many family memories with our already adult "kids". We feel sorry that the "cost effective" way of managing the hotel is so obvious. Maybe more little things, which don t cost nothing or not much, could be added to the service. And in very near future the rooms will definitely need the reconstruction in order to fullfill One&Only reputation and not to be just another old ordinary 5 star hotel. Collapse
