There is an old fashioned elegance to this place but any glory it may have had is long since faded. Sold out to a chain it is tired, grumpy and worn out. The staff were friendly in the main until I came down for breakfast and stood by the entrance to the bar/restaurant while 3 of the staff standing by ignored me. Eventually a worn out looking lady, who turned out to be the er, maitre d'e, I suppose, enquired as to what I wanted - well breakfast actually - I was told in an irritable manner 'breakfast is from 7 to 10'. Concerned I had set my alarm too early and I must have been an hour early I asked in much earnest 'oh sorry, what time is it?' Three members of staff standing around reading things looked at the clock together and went 'ah, oh right, er, it's 5 past 7'. The miserable maitre d'e muttered something about someone calling in sick and I was then ignored for another 5 minutes. Eventually I asked 'well how long will it be?'. Sorry sir and I was walked into bar/restaurant where the food wasn't yet ready...eventually it was and it was one of those dodgy all you can eat buffets. The maitre d'e had a stinking cold and I swear walked around, sniffed, wiped her nose on the back of her hand, laid some cutlery, sniffed, wiped her nose and so on...So aside from that the bed was comfortable, the room was clean but if you scratch beneath the surface there are light sockets missing (literally holes in the wall with old wires taped up inside), the hot tap spun around when you tried to turn it on, the TVs (including the one in the bar/restaurant) had really bad quality connection and literally kept dropping signal, I didn't think TVs even did that anymore. Kind of reminded me of my old days backpacking around Thailand. To top it all off the fire alarm went off at 3.30am, I spent a while getting warm clothes on as it was below freezing that night to find the Manager berating someone down the corridor who I assume had been smoking a cigarette in their room. When I came out to trudge outside the Manager said not to worry to go back into the room - eventually the alarm stopped and it took me another half hour to get back to sleep. I think what worried me most about that was the fact they had an alarm system that would be set off by a cigarette, sounds safe maybe but in a weird way that shouldn't happen. So yeah, that's it really, what should be a quaint independent Hotel with a bit of charm is a cut price mess, part of a chain where the owners are far away telling the Accountant not to spend too much on renovations or staff. A shame as it is a good location. Collapse

On leaving the "Hotel" (22.30, 14th Dec 17) I was unfortunate enough to use the Customer Toilet. It was literally awash with urine... plus a nice fawn, soggy carpet as an entry feature. Fortunately I had sturdy, urine-proof hiking boots on. But not since darkest Delhi - or the infamous Conti Club in Manchester 40 years ago have I felt safer from mustard attack. I complained. 1) We are going to clean it, 2) They are temporary toilets...... Obviously, it is not their fault.... Silly me.... it must be the customer's fault for using the toilets. Collapse

Hotel interior was dissappointing and outdated. There was renovation works ongoing and and limited service available. It would have been better if they had advised this in advance and we could have stayed in the Alexander.
