Normally we stay the first weekend in Dec at O'Callaghan's on the Green, but as we left the booking late this year, we stayed at the Davenport instead and we were not disappointed. 8 of us had a mixture of Jnr Suites and twin rooms - the suites are enormous - so much that 8 of us could comfortably hang out in my mother's room for a coffee, wine and a chat. The twins were also a good size - all rooms were scrupulously clean and very comfortable beds. Of course this is what you would expect for a 4* hotel, but the staff add the extra star - check in and check out was totally painless; Staff were helpful, attentive and very patient, accommodating all my 86yr old mom's needs without any fuss or comment and the barman made one of the best cocktails I have had in a while! Breakfast was good, a full 'Irish' is always something to look forward to, good selection of hot and cold food and replenished regularly. The location is great, less than 10mins to Grafton St and Trinity, Oscar Wilde in louche form can be seen in Merion Gdns and for aficionados of Joyce, Sweny's Pharmacy (Leo Bloom's lemon soap) is around the corner. We ate in grand style at the Trocadero and at the Bon Crubeen - both highly recommended. And for us no trip to Dublin would be complete without a visit to Neary's Bar (no music no TV) - lovely convivial atmosphere and fabulous smoked salmon with a glass of white wine! Roll on Dec 2017 Collapse

Stayed here on recent visit to Dublin and we got a lovely spacious room with attached sitting room which was very comfortable. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Car parking was about 100 metres away and cost 12 euro per day. Breakfast was good but not excellent. Bar was comfortable and pleasant with quite good bar food available. Very pleasant stay but we paid 200 euros so it had to be at higher end. Collapse

From the start this is not the usual type of place or location we would stay at when in Dublin. We tend to gravitate to the less expensive offerings of say Lower Gardiner Street. As a treat our Irish friends booked us a night here as a farewell to Ireland. This is an impressive building that used to be a posh church and now it's a very posh 4* hotel - historic indeed. The foyer is quite beautifully decorated, getting into the Christmas spirit. We found the reception staff to be inviting and helpful and checkin was quick and smooth, even though we arrived early (thank you Jifferson). We loved our room - the decor had a warm, cosy feel about it. The only negative was the smoke detector was located above the bed which had a strobe light that flashed every 10 seconds, it actually felt like we were having our photo taken repeatedly throughout the night. We mentioned it at checkout and they know it's a problem... but then they just fall back on the tried and true "it's rules and regulations you know". Equipment that just shines a small green light would be much less invasive and likely just as good for the rules and regulations. The room we were in, 7400, is not for the claustrophobic. It's a big room, but internal - the only window looks down into the lobby and obviously can't be opened. So even with the heating switched completely off, it took a long while (about 4 am) for the room to cool down overnight - no way to let fresh air in. Definitely would not stay in that room again. This is the reason for not giving it a 5 star rating. In the dining room for breakfast we felt like we were sitting in a stately house, looking out and watching the world go by. Breakfast was a buffet affair with a huge selection of continental dishes - fruit, cereals, cheeses, meat and pastries. Hot offerings included the famous full Irish fare which we never tire of but we think our waistlines will be glad to see the last of these culinary delights (bacon, sausages, puddings, mushrooms, eggs, tomatoes). For us this was a perfect way to finish our stay in Ireland and we love visiting Dublin especially at Christmas. Collapse

On the last day of our stay in Dublin, me and my family decided to have a stroll down the city center. On the corner of some park next to goverment buildings you'll find gorgeous Davenport O'Callaghan. Insides of the Hotel is kept in cold stones and classy interiors, which we liked a lot. We thought of restaurant but apparently only bar area is open for the evening meal. Bit disappointed we decided to stick with drinks and sat in "presidents bar" Few moments later we were approached by a waiter and after introducing himself and welcoming us he offered food menu, told us about specials, and offered glass of water with explanation that it is good to give a small heads up to your stomach and liver ahead of some drinks. For the rest of the evening BART gave us his complete attention and whenever around our table he offered some snacks ( popcorn ) he kept our pint glasses full, told us about surrounding areas and made fantastic host. We were bit picky and fussy and he made us feel very special. Even my mom was delighted, and she is not an easy one to please. We haven't stay in the Hotel, but visit to the bar in the quiet evening like ours is a must when in the area. O'Callaghan Davenport - keep up the good work and your train your Staff the way you do as it is an extraordinary example of Irish hospitality and so called CRAIC that you all have in You. Thank You for the amazing night - Dave & Jess with mum and Dad Aurora, IL Collapse
