My wife and I booked into the hotel on Saturday 4th February for a week. We paid in full on arrival. On Wednesday morning we were woken by hammering at 7.30 a.m. which went on and on. When we went down to breakfast were told it shouldn’t have happened as the builders conducting the refurbishment were not due to start work until 9 a.m. We were offered profuse apologies and assurances that it would not happen again. We were treated to complimentary drinks in the bar that night. As far as the episode was concerned we felt it was over and done with - acceptance of a cause for complaint, remedial action and compensation. On Thursday morning we were woken again at 7.30 by someone hammering. I rang Reception twice to complain however the hammering continued. When we went down to breakfast we complained to management. A manager came to see us during breakfast and told us it should not have happened and it would not happen again. By way of putting things right the hotel would move us to a different room and refund us the cost of a night’s accommodation. We agreed to this. On Friday evening, when we were having a drink in the bar having eaten out, we were approached by a manager who told us that he had been trying to contact us to offer us dinner and a nice bottle of wine by way of recompense because the hotel could not make a refund due to the fact we had booked through Booking.Com and had paid in full on arrival. (Really?? The meal offer was extended to Saturday night, had the manager done his homework he would have realised that we were leaving on Saturday morning. On being informed of this he offered a voucher, for a free night’s stay later in the year, which would be emailed to us on Monday 13th. It is now the 15th and we are still waiting. I wouldn’t stay here again given management’s failure to deliver a comfortable stay in the first place or recompense in lieu. A place to get hammered? Our stay should have been comfortable and peaceful but it wasn’t due to the determination of builders refurbishing the hotel who started hammering at 7.30 a.m. Complimentary drinks together with assurances it would not happen again resolved our first complaint. The next day the builders were hammering at 7.30 again. Reception seemed incapable of resolving the issue so we complained to management (again) who assured us it would not happen again, offered to move us to another room and refund a night’s accommodation. We got the move but the refund has not been forthcoming due to our booking being made through Booking.com and being paid in advance apparently. A meal and wine were offered as recompense but too late for us to take advantage. An accommodation voucher has been promised but not received. My overall impression is that management are incompetent at managing the builders (renovation work is due to go on for months) and will use any excuse to avoid making meaningful recompense. An eagerly anticipated break was avoidably spoiled. Collapse

You can tell that this hotel is a bit old and outdated but honestly it still is fantastic. It's a classic hotel and the staff are lovely. Our room was a generous size and the bed was absolutely huge. The room had a kettle, selection of coffee/tea and 2 biscuits. There was a safe, ironing board and iron. The wardrobe had a sliding door that acted as a full length mirror. Bathroom was very clean. Stayed here for one night and would definitely stay again. Aside from the odd mark on the carpet and old window it was brilliant. such a good location, right next to trinity. We walked everywhere we wanted to go. Most of the museums are around the corner. We were told that refurbishments were starting on our floor but they didn't affect us as we were checking out when they were starting. Had breakfast the following morning Which was traditional and tasty. Cheers to the guy working at reception Sunday morning 19th February. Collapse

The Alexander hotel is currently being refurbished but they haven't taken any guests into consideration. The construction starts at 7am in the morning until 7pm Monday to Saturday and can be heard throughout the hotel. The staff at the front desk are trying their best but it's clear that Managment are uncaring and greedy, any sensible Managment would have shut the hotel or at least given guests warnings before they arrived. It is deplorable that guests weren't informed before staying. I stay in the hotel regularly for business (on a separate complaint th WiFi in the bedrooms is basically non existent). I have to say that the staff in the hotel are absolutely lovely and it is appalling that Managment have put them in this position for sheer greed! Avoid avoid avoid. Spend hard earned money elsewhere! Collapse
