Description

Northern Lights, Volcanoes & Glacier Lagoon escorted tour is 5 day/4 night winter trip to Reykjavik and the Icelandic countryside. This tour is a perfect winter trip to explore the highlights of Iceland. Why not explore the land of fire and ice with guided visits to volcanoes, lava fields, hot springs and magnificent glaciers? During this tour you visit Iceland's most popular sites such as the Golden Circle route, the South coast and Vatnajokull national park. On route you see cascading waterfalls, smoking geysers, colourful volcano craters, a spectacular ice lagoon with floating icebergs and black lava beaches, all set against a backdrop of glistering glaciers and restless geology. Besides, there is always a thrilling potential for the night sky to be decorated with the jewels of the amazing Aurora Borealis.

Excellent value, the tour offers basic accommodation for a rustic Icelandic experience. In Reykjavik you’ll stay at the central Fosshotel Baron. The tour also includes 1 night at Fosshotel Nupar in the Vatnajokull region, whilst in South Iceland’s Hella you’ll enjoy the outdoorsy haven of Árhús Cabins – with a small kitchenette in each cabin, an onsite restaurant and free Wi-Fi access also available, you’ll have everything you need. Please note, particular hotels are subject to availability.

Tours begin on Sundays, and include the following highlights.

Day 1, Sun: Welcome to Iceland

Flybus shuttle from Keflavik International Airport to the accommodation in Reykjavík. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own, dinner suggestions too!

Day 2, Mon: The Golden Circle Route

Meet your guide in the morning and start your escorted tour with a short introduction to Icelandic geology, while watching a film at Reykjavik Volcano House. Here you can also experience a hands-on geological exhibition where you can examine various pieces of pumice, ash and lava from Icelandic volcanoes. Later on you will depart Reykjavik for Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of Iceland's most fascinating places. Exploring the hot springs at Geysir, the geyser Strokkur spouts every 5 to 15 minutes to the delight of visitors. Then travel to Gullfoss, “the golden falls”, one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls. In the evening, you hear about the Northern Lights from your tour guide. Further south you stop at the explosion crater called Kerid, which is filled with water and resembles an ancient ampitheatre. After dinner you will get to see a movie about the Northern Lights and then naturally, once darkness falls, you are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights. We stay for one night in simple cabins in South Iceland.

Day 3, Tue: Vatnajokull National Park & Glacier Lagoon

Travel to Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs. Explore this extraordinary site, perhaps catch a glimpse of seals swimming in the arctic waters and walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs get stranded. The Vatnajökull National Park is about 12,000 square kilometers and it is the largest National Park in Europe. In this area is find Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment and Europe's largest glacier. In the evening you hear a presentation from your tour guide on the Northern Lights and then have another chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky. Stay for one night at Fosshotel Nupar in the Vatnajokull region.

Day 4, Wed: South Coast

Head across the Eldhraun lava field to the village of Vík. Take a stroll on the black lava beach and along the bird cliffs at Reynisfjara beach, before passing the glacier Myrdalsjokull and the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajokull and continuing to Skogafoss waterfall, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Further West you will then reach Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Return to Reykjavik for one last night.

Day 5, Thu: Departure Home

Transfer by Flybus airport shuttle from your accommodation in Reykjavík to Keflavík Airport.

All rooms offer private shower/wc. This is a great value for money winter program. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available on the tour buses. All tours are guided in English and maximum group size is 30 persons.
