Paris Birthday Trip

My husband booked a four day trip to Paris for my birthday at The Normandy Hotel. He chose the hotel because of its location (near the Louvre) and the fact that it was a four star hotel and on its own website it looked beautiful. Old and grand. After he gave me my present at the end of January I went on their website and then onto TripAdvisor. The reviews for the hotel were dreadful but we decided to go with it and give it the benefit of the doubt as we couldn't believe it could be so awful from the pictures on their site. Unfortunately it really was. It was easily and without doubt the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The lobby itself initially doesn't look too bad but on closer inspection everything looks tired and shabby. There is nowhere comfortable to sit. The bar is old and dismal and was closed for most of our stay. I have to say the reception staff and particularly the concierge were very nice and helpful. The room itself was appalling. Small, old and very shabby. The paintwork was all chipped everywhere. The wardrobe door wouldn't stay shut as the hinge was broken and had no catch on the front. The bed was small and uncomfortable. It had just sheets and a blanket, no bedspread or valance and the pillows were not much thicker than the sheets. No tea or coffee making facilities and no minibar. The bathroom was not much better although it was as clean as it could be. None of it at all replicated the photos on their website. Breakfast the next morning was just awful. The dining room is small dark and depressing. The breakfast spread itself would have been quite nice if everything was replenished regularly. We had to wait 10 mins for a glass to have orange juice. When we got in there, there were the dregs of scrambled egg and bacon which were not renewed in the 30 odd mins we were in the room. There was no bread left for toast, no cheese, no croissants and one of the waiters had to go the bakers to get some more french bread. On that occasion I had a bit of french bread and jam for my meal. We didn't bother the next day and on the last day we popped in for a coffee (which had run out) and it was exactly the same so we left and went elsewhere. We had a wonderful time in Paris but it was marred by the fact this hotel was so bad. There is no way this hotel should have four stars. Collapse

If you are looking for something affordable at an awesome location for walking around Paris - this is a great choice. I was travelling alone and I felt perfectly safe in the area around the hotel. The hotel is a little out of date and the walls are a little thin but not outrageous for the price. The room was only out of date in a style sense - everything in the room still works, it was clean, and the bed was comfortable. Complimentary breakfast had a nice selection as well. Overall I loved my stay and would choose to stay here again! Collapse

We got the Roissy bus from CDG to the Opera area. From here - once we found out bearings we were able to walk for about 10 mins to find the hotel. Old -with character Check in was fine and we went to our room - 313. Big room with high ceilings. Old fashioned but that's what gives it charm. Plenty of towels and toiletries and a hairdryer in the bathroom. Small fridge in the room too which was handy. Blankets in wardrobe if your feeling chilly and a portable air conditioner as well for the hot summer nights. No tea coffee facilities . Double sink in bathroom but only one side worked. Shower was good and there was plenty of hot water. Nice clean sheets and the room was tidied every day and towels changed. We only had breakfast here one of the days as we were out early. It was nice enough. Plenty of fruit and breads and cereals etc. Well stocked during the breakfast time. Self service. Very Good value for €12.each. Great Location. Just step outside and you can see the Louvre. 5 mins walk to the entrance. If you walk through the Louvre grounds and across the river the Musee D'Orsay and the Rodin Museum are within walking distance. Lots of Metro stations around too. Plenty of cafes and restaurants around - quite expensive though. We were very pleasantly surprised with a visit to the restaurant just opposite. Le Montegrosso. Very friendly and very nice food indeed. Well worth a visit. I would say that if you like peace and quiet tell them when you book. we were in room 313 and there was a lot of noise from the street - deliveries, bin collections etc very early in the morning. Maybe they have a quieter floor if you ask. Yes its an old hotel - yes it could do with updating. but that would just increase the price and the area itself is quite expensive. It would also lose its old Parisian charm. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone wanting to be close to a lot of interesting places to see. Tres Bien. Collapse

I'll start by saying this hotel is a classic French building. If you want to come to Paris and stay in a building that looks like it belongs in Paris then this would be it. Beautiful high ceilings, small lifts and twisty stairs. From the moment, we walked in the staff were very helpful and polite and allowed us to store our bags safely until check in as we didn't want to wait around to explore. The rooms themselves were average but in all honesty, who cares what the rooms are like as long as the beds were comfortable and amenities were clean which they were. You should be out exploring Paris! The breakfast was beautiful, however bigger glasses for the drinks would have been better and maybe a better layout as I kept getting squashed in by people who don't understand the term "excuse me". Very close to the Louvre & lots of metro stations to get around. If you like buying tourist gifts then this is also the right hotel as they run along the main round that the hotel Street runs off. Would totally recommend this hotel to anyone and great value for money. Collapse

Booking this hotel online was very easy. The location is excellent. It looks like some rooms have been updated bathrooms while others - well - there just French. Although we were in a non smoking room, and we didn't smell any smoke in the room there was definitely smoke in the closet. We put our coats in the closet and they smelled like smoke for 3 days. I have to agree with some other reviewers about the lopsided floors. I actually thought I was going to roll out of the bed at least twice. We were very happy when management moved us to a better room upon request. The 2nd room was bigger and located on the corner of the hotel (rooms x07-08) are on the corner. This was a much better room for us. There are elevators to each floor but rooms toward the end of the corridors the floors split so I could see this would be difficult for some people. Be sure to ask for a room near the elevators if you have any physical difficulties or very heavy luggage. The hotel is 1 short block to the Louvre, several blocks to the Opera house, Galeries Lafayette and several metro stations. The Concierge was very helpful. The Concierge can help book the Airport Shuttle to either airport. They take half deposit & you pay CASH for the remainder so be sure to keep some. 36 euros total. Collapse
