It does not get any better that this, my compliments to the management and staff for the most enjoyable stay ever. We stayed here in 2001 with our kids and decided to revisit the city in 2017 (without the kids). Japanese standards of service and politeness abound here from every member of staff we encountered from check in to maid to bellman. We had booked a Nikko floor room in order to have access to the executive lounge, as it happened we were given a Junior Suite which was perfectly nice, albeit on a slightly lower floor. Being in a suite we had access to 'premium high speed wifi' - a pathetic 4Mbps service - the free service is little better than old fashioned dial up - utterly unacceptable in this day and age. We also had fridge space for personal use and there was an ice machine nearby. The suite was perfectly nice with, thankfully, a coffee making machine which we easily adapted to produce hot water for tea. The location of the hotel is excellent, being only a couple of blocks from Union Square and the Powell Street terminus of the cable cars. We used the lounge every evening which served basic wines, soft drinks and snacks of an evening - not a patch on a Crowne Plaza or Shangri La lounge but not bad all the same. All in all a great 4 night stay and were we to return to SF for a third visit we would stay at the Nikko again. Worth seeing apart from the usual Alcatraz, GG bridge et al is the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate park - this has been rebuilt since our 1st visit into a world class attraction with a terrific aquarium and planetarium among other things - there's something for everyone there. If visiting Alcatraz the audio tour is an absolute must, the Pier areas leave me cold being too touristy in my opinion but it is very popular. If you fancy a bottle of wine there's a liquor store across the street - don't shop there, it's hideously overpriced. Collapse

I am pleased with this hotel because it is reasonably glamorous and importantly quiet!!! Yes that is correct, after a 13 hour flight I was able to check in three hours earlier than permitted, have a shower and a good sleep to revive myself. It has pleasing dinner options and is well placed in the Down Town area. Would return to this hotel. The one negative was that I was unable to communicate with the hotel before my departure to organise the hotel pick up. The meal contact did not function properly. Collapse

Very convenient location to cable cars, shopping, restaurants. I have mixed feelings about this hotel. People were friendly, housekeeping staff were quite efficient and very friendly; the patio adjacent to the fitness center on the 5th floor was awesome. We were assigned a room on the 24th floor (requiring key access in the elevator). The room on first glance was great. Immaculately clean, great views from the windows. The rooms were obviously recently remodeled.... that being said, there are several big misses in the layout. First, the only lit mirror is a small mirror above the sink which is on the far end of the counter. While the counter is large enough for two people to get ready at one time, it is impossible as the mirror so small. Next, there are two electrical outlets in the bathroom, one on the opposite end of the counter from the sink and the other behind the toilet. Both are far enough away that the cord of both the hair dryer, and my curling iron could not reach - so fixing my hair became an exercise in gymnastics. Why they didn't just put a mirror the full length of the counter, escapes judgement. Clearly the designers never used the bathroom. The shower and tub were very nice. Next, the closet is such that you have to continuously move the hangers out of the way in order to close it. A small detail, but with the safe in the closet, it makes using both sides difficult. There were nice outlets and chargers adjacent to the bed and on the table. Yet one of the regular outlets on the wall would not accept a standard plug. Finally, the heating and cooling cycles - so eventhough we set the temperature for cooling at night, we both woke up hot - as the heat seemed to turn on. While quiet at night, the heating and ventilating system also seemed to 'squeak'. So I liked the location, walking distance to Union Square, Starbucks in the lobby, cable cars around the corner, but found the room we stayed in was a fit frustrating. We were on vacation, so it didn't matter as much. If I would have been in town for a special occasion, I would have been stressed while getting ready. Collapse
