I read the reviews on the twin room and thought I could handle it. I knew I would just be sleeping in the room and didn't care if it was small. The size didn't bother me, but the bed was the worst. Bad bed, terrible bedding, I was concerned about sleeping on it. The room just didn't feel clean at all. The hotel was a great location for me. It was easy to jump on and off the subway. Close to Central Park. Front desk was nice. But I will never cheap out that much on a hotel room again. Believe the other reviews. They are not being picky. Collapse

Newton is conveniently located nearby 96th station on the red 1 line. Going uptown or especially downtown for dinner is so easy. I like this area for the Sunday farmers market at Columbia University and for the many eateries that are good and inexpensive by NY standard. It is clean with smaller beds that are comfortable. Rooms are medium large with a window. We liked it better than the big chain hotels in NY. We bought parking online which saved a lot of car moving. We drove from DC. Collapse

I recently booked a night at Hotel Newton, only to find a room that reeked of smoke, an unsafe elevator that stopped on every floor with out anyone being there, and pitiful bathroom. I was so disgusted I didn't stay the night and the management was incredibly unhelpful when it came to the conditions. To 'explain' the gross shared bathroom, they printed out the ad on booking.com to say that it was in print what I purchased. Will never be booking there again or trusting booking.com Collapse

I have stayed several times at this hotel, and had favorable experiences. The hotel rooms and bathroom at this older property have always been meticulously clean, and the staff has always been pleasant and helpful . This Friday night through Sunday morning stay was another story..... The room we were placed in on the 6th floor was next to a shared bathroom. The carpeting outside the bathroom stank from urine. People were quite noisy walking back and forth to the bathroom, and the sound of the toilet flushing continuously kept us from sleeping. The people in the room next to ours started blasting their TV at 10:30pm and continuously screaming at each other. I visited the front desk to request a room change but was told the hotel was sold out, and there was nothing they could do for me. They refused to ask the guests in the next room to be quieter. I called the desk twice again, when the screaming and TV volume were well beyond a nuisance level. The night manager came up and said he couldn't hear any noise and that the neighboring guests had a right to do whatever they wanted to do in their room. At 5am my husband and I began to pack up, and my husband went down to let the front desk know we were going to check out. Miraculously, the manager found another room for us to stay in for the rest of the night, and for the remainder of our scheduled stay. This room was indeed very quiet. While checking out, I learned that there were also noise problems on Saturday night, reported by the couple placed in our original room. Clearly, the hotel staff has not figured out how to manage unruly guests to prevent unpleasant situations for other visitors. I asked the manager to "comp" us or reduce our rate for the noisy first night, but was told nothing could be done, and I should take it up with Expedia, as my stay had been prepaid. Expedia's rep also told me nothing could be done, as the hotel refused to cooperate since I had been moved to a "nicer" room. Expedia sent me an email confirming it was the hotel's policy not to make amends. After several time consuming calls to Expedia's Customer Service department, and a threat to stop payment on room charges to my credit card, they offered to issue a $50 credit towards another trip. Both Expedia and Hotel Newton are in the hospitality business, and it is shocking that the hotel did not demonstrate a greater willingness to right the situation, and that Expedia made so little effort to support a dissatisfied long- time customer. I don't think I will be using either again for future travel. Collapse
