The location opposite 96th Street Station was fantastic. Given the snow and freezing conditions, I had underestimated how important an express major station would be. The room was not as small as some reviews imply, had everything I needed and was very clean. I asked for a quiet room, and it was very quiet. Wifi worked well, and the little kitchen gave me all I needed. I wasn't very impressed with the diner on one side, but on the next corner was an excellent bakery and cafe. The pharmacy / supermarket next door was terrific. The laundry nearby did a great job. But for me the best feature was the staff. As a mature aged woman landing from Australia with limited experience traveling, I asked some questions which must have seemed very silly. Every question was answered with care and excellent advice. Having friendly people at the desk 24/7 made me feel safe. Mike, in particular, did everything he could to be helpful. Even if I had ample money for a far more expensive hotel, I would return to the Newton. Collapse

We stayed here twice over the last few weeks as we had family in Mt. Sinai hospital and this was the closest hotel at a reasonable cost. The subway is across the street and a cab to 114th St is $7. The Manhattan Diner next door is good and reasonably priced. The breakfast is huge! This building has been here for over 100 years so structurally, it was very quiet. Stayed in rooms both in front and back and both were equally quiet. I can't say enough about the staff. Everyone was very helpful from the simple things like extra coffee and towels to allowing us to store luggage while at the hospital. I agree with other reviewers that the beds were firm but that didn't affect my sleep and I had no issue with room temperature. As for shared baths, the rates are clearly stated as to whether you get a private bath or shared. Collapse

This was the second time I stayed at the Hotel Newton; the first time was in March 2015, for which I also wrote a review. This visit was during Restaurant Week, which also coincided with a promotion on hotel room rates - got a great price for a double room (two queen sized beds) in January. As with my last visit in March 2015, Charles at the front desk was very friendly and helpful, and it was great to see Darien, the door man again - like returning to see old friends in the big city. My room was cleaned and tidied very well by housekeeping staff. The room had a dorm sized refrigerator and microwave, and coffee maker with coffee inserts and cups. A desk and two chairs, and a very nice little closet that contained a luggage rack, ironing board and iron. Bathroom was very nice, very clean; good water pressure, modern toilet. Temperature in the room was always comfortable - the place uses steam heat, so you can control the temp in your room. I turned on the heat for a short time once, then turned it off and never needed it again for my five day stay. My stay was very comfortable and the floor was nice and quiet at night. I like that they provide the option for guests to re-use towels, to help conserve energy and natural resources. Location is fantastic - located between 94th and 95th on Broadway on the Upper West Side, across from the 96th street subway station, making access to public transport incredibly easy. Very nice neighborhood, lots of great fresh food markets and shops. Duane Reade (Walgreens drug store) open 24 hours a day is just next door to Hotel Newton. Symphony Space is across the street. Internet/Wi-Fi is still an extra charge per day, though you can use limited internet service in the lobby, on their computers, to check in to your airline for your flight, and print your boarding pass, for free. I used the free computers for internet service at the NY Public library branch that is on Columbia's campus - free of charge even to out of towners. Love our public libraries! Hotel Newton is a small, vintage, boutique hotel with wonderful staff, and in a fantastic location. Collapse

Entering the hotel you have the impression of something left as it was 20 years ago. In an old but nice building, this hotel is here since 100 years ago as the pictures in the dark (and a bit sad) lobby show. Very clean and tidy, the hotel is reliable and convenient if they still offer the rooms at the cheap prices usually available. My single room had enough space, but if you are looking for something comfortable, you will need to check carefully before booking as they have larger rooms obviously at higher rates. Room and bathroom were kept very tidy and clean. The only reason why I cannot give 5 stars was the noise coming from the window, as the windows are old and also adapted to host an air conditioning, with the side effect that much more noise is getting through the window. If you are given a room facing Broadway, it will be very noisy and I would recommend to check that also upfront with the front desk. They are (with the exception of one case) very happy to help. As a final comment, it would be so easy to renew the curtains and the very old fashioned bed covers. They really give a bad impression just because they are ugly. Choosing a light colour or a modern combination of colours would make the rooms more appealing. Collapse

This location was great for me, being only 4 blocks from my daughter's apartment. But it should be good for everyone - upper midtown, on Broadway, lots of restaurants, shops and subway close by. The hotel is clean and the rates are excellent. I had a small comfortable room with a private bath, which was more than adequate. Nice, in fact. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I actually had to use the air conditioning. In December. The room was quite warm. Or even hot. But the air conditioning worked. I have to wonder that we are asked to save energy by re using our towels, but we have to use AC in winter. It is an old hotel, that must be the reason, but it has been renovated and is an excellent bargain. There is no safe in the room, and my room was small, but has everything else that might be needed. Bed very comfy. Collapse
