A loyal gold Marriott member who has become truly disappointed in the brand. On Thursday 13th July 2017, I arranged a three night surprise trip to the Marriott Metrocentre Gateshead with my partner who was celebrating her 30th birthday. Both of us were looking forward to this trip away, which would also be a restful break period away from work. I couldn’t have been more wrong to have chosen this hotel. Prior to arriving at the property, roughly a week before the visit I contacted the hotel via email to arrange a few special requests for my partners birthday, to which they replied and stated that would try and accommodate. Arrived at roughly 15:00hrs on Thursday 13th July 2017, via the rear entrance of the hotel and were greeted at the reception by one of the on duty receptionists Michaela, who stated that my room was ready and that as it was a special occasion, a £10.00 welcome voucher useable at the restaurant and bar would be issued. The receptionist then informed us of where our room was and how to access it from the reception. The receptionist never told us about the facilities in the hotel, where the bar/ restaurant was, opening times and nothing at all about car parking for the hotel. Luckily enough I had gone down to the car in the rear car park roughly an hour after check-in to notice that a car park notice stated that if any car was parked in this area without notifying reception then it would be clamped. Due to this, I went straight to reception and informed them that at no point did they tell us about noting our car registration, which was only a minor detail which spoilt our visit to the hotel. Clearly poor reception training is being adopted at this hotel and this was just the beginning. On check-in, I questioned whether my room was to be upgraded as being a gold member, and informed that no upgrade was available but the room itself had items added such as bottled water and extras to meet the upgrade room equivalent. This wasn’t the case. Having arrived in the room, there was no writing paper, pens, face clothes or even drink glasses, never mind the bottled water mentioned at reception. The room was bare, and from my many years of being in Marriott hotels a clear lack of attention had me made to my room requirements. Do housekeeping care? How can a hotel that prides itself on customer satisfaction/ service get such basic requirements wrong? I have visited many 2* hotels in the past who can get it right so why cant 4*/5* Marriott? Anyway to the main points- 1) Requested extras towels every day as stated on room reservation request. Apparently Marriott prides itself on this. Hmm I wonder…. Was brought the minimum every day even though they had been requested. Reception and housekeeping were informed every day on the telephone about face clothes as when the rooms had been serviced, they kept on forgetting to replenish aswell as towels. What is going on? Do I really need to be telling the hotel every day, does anyone actually listen? After 3 days of telling them probably not. 2) Had eaten in the restaurant on the first night and used the £10.00 voucher given at reception on check-in. Poor quality food, in which the burger my partner ate was dry and peppercorn sauce as an accompaniment was watery and had no taste. Staff stated when informed about the food. “OH WE WILL TAKE THE SAUCE OFF THE BILL. NOTHING MORE WE CAN DO!” but they still took the voucher. Customer service shocking and clearly lack of attention to detail. My partner was clearly disappointed as it was a birthday meal. 3) On day one, we had room service breakfast and asked the night before for a selection of pastries on the order form, to which we got sent three croissants. To me that isn’t a selection? Poor quality ingredients swimming in fat and cold. Day 2 we had a very poor breakfast in the restaurant, no eggs, fatty bacon which would block your arteries if you saw the amount of fat on it/ swimming in grease. Had to ask 3 members of staff for some poached eggs and waited about 20 minutes. Cold sausages half cooked, and filthy tables. 4* Marriott, hmmm… I’ll let you answer that. Luckily enough being a gold member the breakfast was free, because I wouldn’t pay the scandalous £16.00 for that rubbish on offer. Poor quality coffee, and plates collected when we hadn’t even finished. It’s as if the staff wanted us out of there as quick as possible. I witnessed two fried eggs squashed into the hot plate, which was disgusting to see. The chef even walked out of the kitchen saw it and walked back in. He obviously clearly cares about his job, hygiene and the Marriott image. It was clearly evident that there was no supervision/ management in the breakfast period overseeing the service being offered. Due to the poor quality food served during our evening meal and poor breakfast you can probably understand why we opted to eat out the other nights and forget about breakfast on our last day. 4) Rang room service for a large bucket of ice for celebratory drinks in the room and got sent a pint glass of ice? Someone obviously doesn’t know the difference between pint glass and bucket…. Frustrating. The room was located on floor 3 so I decided to get some ice from the ice machine and it was empty. Reported and nothing was done about it. No attention to detail clearly. 5) Partner and I decided to go for a drink in the outside seating area, next to the entrance of the hotel. Well talk about a mess. Litter and stains over the seating, tables filthy and ash trays filled to the rim, scattering cigarette butts all over the table. I know what you are thinking, 4* hotel right? Hmmm……… I don’t know what it is with Marriott Hotels in the UK at the moment, but in my opinion Marriott hotels located in cities are losing their appeal/ poor service and image. I frequently stay at the Northampton Marriott Hotel, which is a fantastic Marriott not in a city with a warm, friendly fantastic service. I truly believe that at the end of the day, it’s down to the management of the premises to reinforce issues highlighted, and from what I have seen at the Marriott Gateshead Newcastle, management is clearly an issue. No one else is to blame. If the management can’t be bothered, I’m sure the staff can’t be. I won’t be returning to the Marriott Metrocentre Gateshead Hotel. Informed receptionist on checkout of my concerns and all he could say was OH!!! No apology nothing. Didn’t even ask if I wanted to see a manger. But probably, from what I have seen over the three days there, they don’t have one. Won’t be returning and am looking at alternative loyalty schemes with other hotel brands. As this isn’t the first time I have had issues with the Marriott where nothing gets done about it. This stay ruined my partners 30th birthday and the Marriott are to blame for this. Being a gold member obviously means nothing and the fact that you state as a brand that you care about your loyal customers is clearly not evident from this stay. Collapse

Having experienced several Marriott hotel, I booked an overnight stay here for my daughter and .myself as time out. On arrival our room was upgraded and was spacious and comfortable. Leisure facilities were good and staff throughout were pleasant, friendly and keen to make the stay enjoyable. Food was excellent and breakfasts plentiful and varied choice. Just returned from another weekend visit and as usual stayed at this hotel. Always a delight to stay here, nice large bedrooms, well appointed and always spotlessly clean. However what really makes this place stand out is the staff. It's not uncommon to visit a hotel and be impressed by a single member of staff, however here at the Marriott I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't greet you with a smile and cheery interaction, they really do make a difference. An ideal location just 5 minutes walk to the Metro Centre and a 10 minute drive into central Newcastle. One observation rather than criticism would be around the breakfast, which was varied and delicious by the way. On the Sunday morning the restaurant was very busy and some of the buffet lines did take a while to be replenished. Every time I travel I tend to hunt around for best prices and locations however when coming to Newcastle I don't bother looking, just book this hotel every time. No contest Collapse

I was just staying overnight in Newcastle and as I have stayed here before I chose this hotel. Although it's outside Newcastle it's very easy to get to and is virtually next door to the Metro Centre Shopping Mall. Although the rooms are a bit dated they do have all you need. Very comfortable with normal bathroom compliments. Large TV flat screen for relaxing with a good glass of wine watching your favourite programme. Staff were superb, very polite, friendly and helpful, which is probably the norm here in the North East. Has a great fitness centre. A great hotel and highly recommend. Collapse
