Stayed here for the Great North Run, found the reception staff excellent, Tony in particular organised for everyone to get to the run in taxis with great efficiency managing the many nervous runners and their families. The room was large comfortable quiet, with the best blackout curtains. Staff in the bar an restaurant were very friendly and efficient. Food was good, and my only grump, at the buffet breakfast guests shouldn't have to tell staff when there are no eggs/bacon/mushrooms and then stand for 10 minutes waiting, that's the job of the hotel staff to check that there is sufficient available: 'just in time' for buffet breakfast doesn't work for guests! Sadly Marriott is not the only hotel in the UK I find this is the practice, and it is no use if you are on a schedule. Collapse

Booked with my partner for a day trip to the nearby Metrocentre. Pros: - Initially very clean and spacious room, pleasantly surprised there was a sofa bed and office desk - Mostly quiet and calm overnight, not too much disturbance - Overall luxury entrance and appearance, worth going over budget! Cons: - Have to pay extra for breakfast which was unsuitable since we had a budget - There was a couple dark stains on the sheets which was quite off putting - Couldn't connect to the wi-fi, advised that it may have been my phone settings - Ran out of tea and milk by morning, wasn't sure if/how to order more Collapse

We stayed here from 20th August until 26th August. In all our travels it was the worst hotel of this advertised quality we have ever been in for service. The problems arose in 2 areas, dining and room management. In respect of our room, we had to ask several times for coffee to be provided, for further milk supplies, and for tissues. In fact, at one stage going to reception and asking for some coffee, we were told some would be sent up immediately which never came. Two hours later on going down to dinner we were told that the hotel had run out of coffee and tissues! We were also promised by the staff that we would be provided with further supplies during the week but none materialised. As an apology that we had no coffee in the room we were promised a complimentary room service coffee at 6.30 am on our final day – this never came. In respect of dining, we were part of a fairly large group dining together and it felt as though the hotel had never catered for this number, and did not know how to manage the service. In fact, it took 2 coach drivers to instruct the maitre d’s in how to manage the flow and service for the diners. At the start of the week it took over 40 minutes for starters to be served and at sometimes there were 50 elderly people (some actually leaning on their walking sticks) queuing for mains in a queue which snaked around the desert section, which had already been laid and which was being used for people to support themselves on. By the time the end of the queue had been served the food was cold. It was obvious that the maitre d’ had no control over the service and it was only thanks to the driver’s intervention that the service improved to a degree, but it took 3 evenings to be acceptable. Even so, there were many other issues with the service, including staff standing around doing nothing, plates being taken from individuals whilst their partners were still eating, and coffee and tea being served cold. The meals themselves were fine but the poor service defeated the hard work that the chefs had put in. Our final straw came when we came down for breakfast on the final morning and were not provided with any coffee or tea. After 35 minutes we had to find and ask a server for some (no apology given). Because of this we asked to see the duty manager and we discussed with her the problems we had experienced. Although she listened sympathetically it was also clear that these issues had not been discussed within the hotel, as she said that she was totally unaware of the dining issues that had beset our group throughout the week. Since then I have written complaining to Marriott Customer Services. I was told an answer would be provided within 5 business days. This did not come until several days after the promised date and i was not satisfied with the answers given. On receipt of this a Marriott Customer Services member said "I assure you that a member of the Guest Experience Supervisor team within Marriott Customer Care is researching your issue and will be responding within two business days." This was 11 days ago and still no answer despite prompting. The bad service continues hence this entry. Collapse
