3 years ago this hotel was a very very good recommendation being freshly renovated and close by the Croisette / Palais. Unforuntately, meanwhile the rooms are already a little run-down again. And worst part: a huge building site in front of the hotel - see picture ... which, of course, is not the hotel's fault, but I think needs to be mentioned. So, ask for a room to the back - or be aware that construction will start at 7:30 in the morning during the week. Collapse

Montaigne Hotel is perfect for travelers. Enjoy a beautiful breakfast with a delicious and vast array of offerings. Lovely lap pool and sauna with all kinds of pampering available. Beautiful lobby and room furnishings. Just a short walk to the Cannes waterfront full of high end shopping, restaurants, night clubs, markets, boating activities, bocce ball (petanque) and cobble stone streets! Collapse

Spent 3 nights here while visiting Cannes & Monaco. The location is great - just a few blocks walk to the waterfront, old quarter for shopping, main boulevard for people watching near the Palais du Film. 2 grocery stores within a block - one organic, one regular. Public spaces and hallways are shopworn and tired looking, definitely in need of a refresh. Our room on the other hand was spacious by European standards and scrupulously clean. Adequate buffet breakfast included, nothing special. Collapse
Great location, great reception staff but lacking in some ways

We've been staying here for years now and always feel very welcome when we arrive: The reception staff are simply superb, friendly, smiling and efficient. We usually have the same room, which is fine, and I love the added advantage of the swimming pool and outdoor space in the garden. However, there seems to have been quite a few changes in this hotel since we first stayed here, all seemingly geared towards cost-cutting, and here's a quick list: Throughout our stay, there was no vanity kit of any sort in the bathroom (a couple of Q-tips and cotton pads would have been useful). We had one small bar of soap between us, which was pretty used up by the time it was replaced. Also, exfoliating soap is not necessarily the best all purpose soap, something milder would be better. The room service menu has been pared down to pretty much nothing and is extremely expensive. No wine by the glass on the room service menu but only by the bottle. Water at 7€ a litre. A plate of charcuterie for 20€. A bottle of non vintage Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne at 70€...definitely way too pricey and not enough choice. There is a fridge in the room but no mini bar anymore. The fridge is great for keeping drinks (mineral water was available in our room, but the macaroons and fruit juice to welcome new arrivals are long gone), but it could have done with a little clean. It's great to have a kettle and coffee-making facilities but there's never enough milk and the lid of the kettle was broken, which resulted in it falling in my cup at the same time as boiling water (could have been worse but this is dangerous). And of course, the only place to boil the kettle is by placing it on the floor as the cord is not long enough to reach any of the plugs. As it was October, the AC was set on 'warm' when we arrived despite it being 23oC so we ended up switching it off and keeping the window open (and allowing a few mosquitoes in). Breakfast is usually good except for the muesli, which contains chocolate chips ... please, please, please, can we have grown-up muesli or at least keep the chocolate chips separate? Wifi was OK, a bit slow when the hotel was full but we had enough passcodes for all our devices. So, all in all, we always look forward to staying at the Montaigne and love the location, but it could definitely be improved with a few small extras. Collapse

We stayed at the Montaigne for three nights as part of a tour & cruise, so we didn't have much choice in the matter. Getting to the location issue: The hotel is 2 short blocks from the train station and only a couple more to the start of the main tourist areas of Cannes. But if it matters to you, be aware that pedestrians returning to the hotel need to be comfortable walking up fairly significant slopes. The hotel itself is well described by the many other reviews here. We particularly enjoyed the excellent breakfast. The exercise room had very limited equipment but I invariably had it to myself and the stepper machine (not electric) met my needs. Everybody at the front desk was always very nice, but not always helpful. When I mentioned the need to send something to the USA by overnight courier service, they had no idea what to do except to tell me to go to the post office. (I did, but nobody there spoke English.) If you need your laundry done, I highly recommend Beverly Press--nearby at 1 Boulevard Carnot (the main street in the area--they did a great wash and fold same day service for us. --Jeff Collapse
