Hotel with class and history

Very nice, historic hotel right in the center of Wroclaw. It is easy to get to by the car.Doas not have a garage but there is paring next to it. On the warm evening, I would recommend a dinner at the roof restaurant with the nice city view.

The Wrocław Monopol Hotel is located nicely near the Old Town. I was here as a guest several times. It's difficult to describe the experience with this hotel in a few sentences. Let's start with what I would like to call the ‘hardware’: This hotel belongs to the Likus brothers, a well known family from Kraków, who renovated and running famous hotels and restaurants all over Poland. I was a guest many times at the Copernikus hotel in Kraków, as well as in Hotel Stary in this for the country so important city. I know how tasteful and nicely the hotels and restaurants were renovated and equipped with fine state of the art technological solutions and furnitures by this tasteful family. Of course, the prices are always outstanding compared to other Polish hotels and restaurants, but reflecting to a certain degree the value and location of the investment properties these gifted brothers did. Hotel rooms are showing mostly great architecture, they are clean and equipped well, no problems here. The restaurants are providing interesting meals for the guests, sometimes - especially when it comes to degustation menus - they are slightly overpriced, but this lays in the eye of people and where they are coming from. Of course, if one is from Manhattan he will not be surprised, but not everybody is coming from NY. My experience in Monopol is that the food was well done, but when it arrives, it wasn't really warm, so maybe it went through the entire house, but I will comment on this in a different post. Basically the kitchen in Copernikus and Stary is better than in the Monopol hotel. Let's talk about the ‘software’. When I was at the Monopol for a third time I had three rooms for my family. We had all our meals in the restaurant, the one on the roof top, as well as lunch and dinner on the ground floor, so our experience is based on a solid ground. No problems with the reservation desk, btw, great and helpful people. The roof top restaurant and bar needs to be discussed in my opinion. First of all it's somehow problematic if they are offering just the degustation menu there, even outside on the roof top restaurant. Compared for example to the “Bayerischer Hof” in Munich - a hotel who has also a fantastic roof top restaurant, where the hotel guest can order what he likes - one can order in Wrocław just four, six or eight courses degustation, which, btw, they do not change on a daily base. If one stays there for a couple of days there is no surprise in the surprise menu after the first dinner. When we were in Wrocław we had around 93/34 degrees during daytime, which is pretty hot. So we had the idea to visit the roof top restaurant after 8 am, when it was possible to sit outside w/o getting grilled by the sun. Unfortunately for lunch the had no sun umbrellas on most places. Unfortunately they just offered the degustation menu on the outside roof top restaurant for dinner. Nothing to choose, just surprise menu. Ok, if one is hungry and wants to sit outside enjoying the beautiful view over the city with an eight course menu, fine. But what was really funny, they command ‘last order’ at 10:30 pm. Sure, if one has to work the next day, he will probably agree with going to bed early. But this was August, summertime, holiday time. So the Sandman isn't coming that early. To learn about this in an somehow unpleasant way is hard to swallow for hotel guests enjoying the summer evening, especially after having a degustation menu which is priced let's say ‘engaged’. Oh, btw, the employees are starting to collect the table linen and chairs at 10:30 pm. I'm sure not to make the guest to feel uncomfortable that early, there must be another reason which is not obvious to the normal hotel guest. But it ended in an uncomfortable feeling. When the employees were asked why they start to behave like that they claimed not to disturb hotel guests. Everybody was quiet on this roof top, people from Poland usually are not tending to be inappropriate loud in fine restaurants, especially not outside. Just to mention: When we were there the reservation forgot to say that there was the huge ‘World Games’ festival 100mrs away from our room over the weekend, that was really loud until midnight, not the poor guys on this roof top restaurant, not allowed to have a drink after 10:30 pm. This is a greatly located hotel, managed fine, but some things need to be re-arranged. Collapse

The air conditioning was excellent. Very quiet and efficient. Breakfast is excellent. We didn't eat in the evenings at the hotel as there were so many excellent restaurants nearby. For the price, I thought it was a good hotel and would stay again :) Collapse
