We wanted a comfortable hotel within easy walking distance of all the attractions in central Exeter and the Mercure Exeter Southgate fitted the bill admirably. It is about 5 minutes' walk from the cathedral for example. We immediately formed a good impression when we checked in at reception where we received a warm welcome and efficient service. We subsequently found the service in the bar and in the restaurant for breakfast to be very good too. The buffet breakfast was excellent with a good selection. The room was clean, comfortable and well equipped with a modern walk in shower. Overall, we thought that the hotel provided good value for money (especially with 10% off for being an Accor Club member) although you do have to pay £12 per day for parking. Collapse

I never got to the hotel as my flight was cancelled. Fortunately my snowed-in wife got there a day late. We paid up-front for the room, six breakfasts and late check-out. The snow was hardly the hotel's fault but a refund on the four uneaten breakfasts would have bought a lot of good will. Regrettably this was refused. Shame as it affected the service and value scores. Collapse

When madam goes on holiday she tends to pack a heavy suitcase and without any Ryanair meanness to dissuade her I arrived at the reception heavily burdened. We chose this hotel as it was cheap compared to the norm and apparently near to the cathedral. It has all the features required by todays young business travellers. An extensive gym swimming pool etc. Good wifi in the en suite room and a bar and restaurant. We were pleased to get a "ground floor " room only it was up a long carpeted incline tricky for my hobbling friend. From the outside the façade seams to be Georgian some original and I think some possibly reconstructed especially going up the hill with all the window lintels in line but the floor levels rising. The interior decorators had done their best using facsimile of an old document repeatedly at various scales. A little distracting if ones reading of the script and Latin translating so rudely as mine. The bedroom was adequate but like any Radisson clone tired and worn. We decided to dine in and tried to order off the "set " menu. the food was wholesome and service fairly prompt although the bill seamed a little pricy. Breakfast was good and plentiful. I discussed the previous nights restaurant bill and was told the set menu had to be pre-purchased hence the disparity I told the receptionist that I would record my dismay at this trick so that other travellers unaware of the "Mercure" way would be forewarned. As for being near the cathedral betwixt the hotel and the cathedral close is a run of city wall so it made the cathedral a bugger to find and a lot further than a crows flight. I think as a place to stay at the weekend as an able bodied family with children it is in relatively easy reach of Cathedral close, town centre and river/dock side. The pool would offer a distraction for inclement weather but I think you would be advised to eat out. For example we walked past a Carlutio's trying to find the cathedral. Collapse
