Beautiful English town, memorable for all the right reasons. Shakespeare's place of birth is littered with historical sites all in close proximity so you can see everything. Saw Henry IV at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre - wonderfully atmospheric and a must do while you are there. Stayed in the Shakespeare Hotel - hundreds of years old with beautiful rooms, helpful and friendly staff, good food. Will definitely be going back! Collapse

Our second visit and it was much better this time around. The hotel is in a fantastic location for the RSC and the town centre as well as many other tourist attractions. The outside is very picturesque, so much so, that it features on postcards. We were lucky enough to be allocated a room in the old section meaning the room has traditional windows and exposed beams etc. A good sized room with an armchair, desk & chair, minibar fridge and all the usual things like tea and coffee tray, complimentary toiletries. A good size bathroom too. Cannot fault the cleanliness of the room at all, absolutely spotless. The hotel was decorated for Christmas and it was just delightful, two large Christmas trees in the public areas and having the roaring log fires going was perfection. I could quite happily have spent my entire break in front of one! Plenty of comfortable sofas, a really cosy atmosphere. A reasonable selection at breakfast on both hot and cold, the only complaint is that there was no real butter, which is a bit of a shame but not a major problem. We ate from the restaurant menu and the burgers were exceptional, well worth the few extra pounds. Food service does stop at 10pm so something to bear in mind if you go to the theatre! For a twin/double room some more towels would have been useful, two small ones for two adults was not really sufficient. Staff were all friendly and helpful, much more so than last time. Reception booked a taxi for me with no problems, and answered basic questions with ease (something which was beyond them last time we stayed). We travelled with our dog who was made very welcome, we ate breakfast in the lounge area and was not made to feel this was a problem at all. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Dogs are allowed in the bars, lounge area and reception. My only comment on the dog aspect of our stay is that on the website they have made a pretty big deal out of being dog friendly and promoting their free gift for all canine guests, but we were not offered a treat or gift for the dog. Overall a great improvement on our last stay and we really look forward to returning. It’s a delightful hotel and finally the service is coming up to the same standards. Already looking to book our next stay. Really good to see customer comments being taken on board. Collapse

My room was very cold and lacking in the basics. No hairdryer, no extra blanket(s), no bath sheet only small towels, although I had hot water the cold wasn't working in the bath. After requests to reception I did get the hairdryer, blanket and a heater, but seriously the room should have been heated properly before occupation and the items missing are standard essentials that all hotels should provide. Would also mention that breakfast was not great! Would not return to this hotel. Collapse

Unique hotel in a perfect location for visit to Stratford-upon-Avon. Comfortable room with period decor. All rooms named after Shakespeare characters. Bathroom updated but had some mold issues. This was addressed to the front desk staff. Breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of foods available. Price of hotel was discounted due to the off season. The 10 pound cost for parking in the back of the hotel was well worth it since parking in the city was difficult to obtain. Collapse

I don't ever complain just when people make mistakes, its part of life. What matters far more is how companies rectify errors or shortcomings. In this instance we returned to our room at 3pm and found it hadn't been serviced, so I reported it to Reception who promised prompt attention. When a person from Housekeeping knocked on our door 3/4 hour later we assumed this was the remedy. Sadly not so. He just asked if we needed any more coffee sachets etc. Naturally, we repeated our need to have the room serviced. Nothing had happened by the time we left for the evening so we made our THIRD report of the problem to Reception, receiving further assertions that Housekeeping were aware of the matter and promises of attention very soon. On returning from the theatre at 10.30pm, instead of the expected gentle wind-down and relaxation before bed, we were met with the room in the same state as when we first left it over 12 hours earlier!!! Astonishingly, the receptionist could do no more than shrug her shoulders and, looking distinctly un-concerned, offer us an email address to which our complaint could be addressed. Nothing else at all would have been done to placate our outrage at this dreadful treatment had not another member of staff taken it upon himself to service our room properly, completing it after 11pm. Shockingly, in the morning the guests checking out just ahead of us were making the exact same complaint about their room not having been serviced either! So this isn't just a single, random omission. I wonder how many more guests, on how many more nights, were treated this way? This is not a complaint that our room wasn't serviced on time, but it is one about the utterly atrocious way in which this shortcoming was addressed. This is why my "Never Again" title for this review seems appropriate. No matter how the hotel's management might try to defend their abysmal performance, the facts speak to an appalling dereliction of duty by numerous staff and also a total absence of adequate management - they were simply asleep on the job. We were offered financial compensation at check-out, but that cannot assuage the dreadful way we were first ignored and then taken for granted. We'd rather pay a fair price for decent treatment. As for letting them have another go at getting things so wrong - no way! Collapse
