We just stayed at the mercure because we were seeing a gig at rock city. The staff were lovely and the hotel decoration was really fun and unusual. I requested a room with a bath which was provided for us and the bed was super comfortable. Can’t fault the hotel really! Apart from the fact we couldn’t get into the hotel pub as I had forgotten my ID! Rookie error. We didn’t have breakfast here so cannot comment on that. Collapse

This is a City Centre Hotel surrounded by shops, bars & restaurants and is only a short walk away from the railway station. The building itself is ancient but has been decorated and brought up to date to a high standard. The best price we found to stay here was via the hotel’s own website, the price was guaranteed and cancellation was possible up until 3 hours before check in. We stayed at the hotel for one night whilst attending a concert at the Motorpoint Arena – which was less than 10 minutes away on foot. Booking into the hotel was smooth & efficient; we stayed on a B&B basis and paid for our stay using American Express. We were given 2 key cards and directions to our room. We were also informed that a wedding reception was taking place in the hotel that night & there may be a little extra noise up until midnight. Our room was on the 2nd floor, it was clean and tastefully decorated. The large bed was comfortable; the sheets were clean and fresh as were the supplied towels. The bathroom was very small – basin, WC & shower only, hardly any room to move at all! Flat screen TV showed sky sports news. The flooring was uneven and creaked – remember the hotel is ancient. Venturing out of our room we visited the Pub which is attached to the hotel. This was a dark and warm venue, well frequented but perhaps a little expensive for the drinks purchased. Upon our return from the concert at about 11pm we entered the hotel and walked up the stairs towards our room. We were then hit by the loud thumping music coming from the wedding reception on the 1st floor. The noise was deafening and didn’t diminish even when we reached our room. The thumping bass reverberated through the walls and floor, it’s then that I realised why 2 pairs of earplugs had been left on the bedside tables! The noise went on well past midnight and prevented us falling asleep and the music had stopped. The following morning breakfast was served on the 1st floor and there was a good selection of available foods. Tea & coffee were offered upon arrival, a cooked breakfast was available via self-service along with fruits, pastries, yogurts, breads/toast, and cereals. Check out was by 11am. This hotel is ideally situated in the centre of town but due to the excessive noise of the wedding reception – I cannot recommend it or say that I would return there to stay again. The noise was unacceptable; we should have been advised of the wedding reception prior to arrival – giving us the opportunity to book elsewhere. Just to mention it upon arrival was far from what was expected. Even though the noise was excessive and the hotel would have known it was going to be (evidenced by the supply of ear plugs and the vague warning upon check in) the hotel did not offer a reduction in the cost of the room or a compensation payment for our suffering. It would have been impossible for us to stay & relax in our room all evening, due to the noise. It is only a blessing that we had been out for the majority of the time. Collapse

How many times have you booked a hotel for a city break only to be disappointed? Not so with this little gem. Upon arrival friendly helpful staff. Double room was clean, quirky decor, sizeable en-suite but the deal clincher was the bed that rivalled a premier Inn bed for comfort! Usual comforts e.g tv, ironing board, aircon/heater, tea/coffee, heated towel rail. The room decor was modern vintage and had lovely mood lighting that made you feel at home. There is a lovely bar downstairs which has a rustic worn feel to it with good selection of drinks and chilled out music. Overall a relaxing pleasurable experience for a reasonable price....will be returning! Collapse

We liked that the room was quirky and had a really interesting layout and decor. The bathroom was cold however and not centrally heated. The bed was comfortable though. The hotel is in a good central location but it is opposite a noisy bar which luckily had to keep the doors closed owing to the freezing weather. Earplugs are supplied by the hotel but they were not quite adequate. Double glazed windows might help more! The staff were very indifferent making it less than welcoming but the lobby and downstairs bar looked fun. Something to note is that parking is in a city multi story carpark, approx 5 minutes walk away. I wasn’t too impressed with the carparks security but that said we survived the night without incident.
