After a pleasant stay here 15 months ago we were happy to return. However this was not such a great stay. Room was clean and although still a little chilly the heater is reasonably efficient. One towel looked like it had been hung back up - I'll reuse mine, not someone else's towel. It was left in the bath and replaced the next day. Only one opening window as the other had no handle, not that it was the weather to open a window. Really poor shower design means that you have to bend right over, under whatever temperature you are trying to change, if the shower temperature alters. We were not asked at reception if we would be charging items to the room. this led to quite a pantomime that evening when we couldnt charge dinner to our room. We decided just to pay by card rather than getting this changed at reception. The card reader did not work in the restaurant so my wife followed her card into reception anyway. Later that evening I was telephoned and asked if we had eaten in the restaurant - indeed we had and had paid for it already! We'd kept the receipts but were glad we hadnt paid in cash. Lots of people seemed to be on some sort of "all inclusive" deal - perhaps offer guests the opportunity to upgrade on arrival. The hotel had a large number of students in the restaurant who appeared to be on their first day. They were keen, but nervous under scrutiny. The ratio of trained to untrained staff was not sufficient for proper training and was unfair to both trainees and those training them. Pigeon breasts were over-cooked. Not the easiest dish to get right but it shouldnt be rock solid in places. Beef bourguignon was good enough for me to have eaten two days in a row but had it not been for poor weather my wife would have insisted on eating elsewhere. We tried the bar food the next day. It was acceptable but the knives really need to be sharpened if you want to cut meat. My wife left her scrambled egg at breakfast after trying a little. She dislikes wasting food, must have been really bad. Lean but rather salty bacon the first day. Only trainees in evidence the first day (no trained staff to be seen most of the time) but the next morning most or all trainees had vanished. The sensor on the bathroom light was faulty so that it came on at random intervals and would stay on for up to half an hour. Since the bathroom door didnt fit well this meant random light appearing and disappearing all the first night. It seemed to have been fixed the second night or perhaps we were just too tried to notice. As we left we said we probably wouldnt be back. This was mainly because of the bathroom light but we mentioned poor service - this was about reception and the credit card fiasco rather than the trainees. Collapse
The staff make all the difference

This is a slightly different review as I am writing this part way through a series of stays at the hotel. Five weekends in a row and I feel in a good position to offer some perspective on what it is actually like to stay at the Mercure in Hatfield. Our stays here have not been without issues, a variety of issues but each and every one was addressed and resolved by the hotel staff and that is the underlying theme of my review. We've experienced the hotel both very quiet and very busy, the latter a wedding reception that took over completely. You will read other reviews mentioning this but I took the time to speak to the manager and staff, establishing that in fact the goalposts had been moved by the wedding party and many more people arrived than were planned for. Despite this, at no point did the hotel staff forget about their guests and worked very hard to manage a very difficult situation. We have encountered a few typical hotel difficulties; noisy disrespectful guests in a neighbouring room, technical problems with a room, limitations in the restaurant, but rather than make a thing of these issues, I will emphasise the major point, in each and every case, they were fixed by the hotel team. It's the privilege of a regular guest to get to know a hotel team better, even to the point of knowing some of their names. In turn, they all know who we are, doing things for us without being asked, remembering our preferences, remembering what we like to eat at breakfast, always a warm welcome back to the hotel. It is these little things, the human elements, which set a hotel apart. I have stayed in many hotels around the world, many with more stars and a higher room rate, but it is so rare to find a hotel with such a warm team of people working hard to look after their guests even, by reading some of the reviews, that hard work goes unappreciated. A case in point, last Saturday evening, the hotel had a nightmare situation in the kitchen - the agency chef decided he couldn't cope and walked out. Saturday night and no chef. The manager, Sumi, thought on his feet and although he had hungry guests who were expecting to eat in the restaurant or bar, he went out of his way to fix it by thinking creatively and offering the guests a Chinese takeaway. His attitude and determination to do his best for his guests, exemplified what we see each week. The hotel itself is modern, clean and functional. The bar area and restaurant are pleasant and have a community feel, helped by the friendly staff. The rooms are well fitted out and clean, the beds comfortable. There's plenty of parking and the location is perfect, just a minute off the A1M. Breakfast is ample, with a buffet of cooked and continental options as well as a range of additional choices available upon request from the kitchen. The bar menu is varied and a reasonable price, meaning a pleasant meal and place to sit at the end of a long day. But it's the staff, the fabulous staff, who breathe life into this hotel, so to Sumi the manager, who is quick to act if he sees anything out of place, to Marie and her team on the reception desk, Alina, Paulina and Abbey, who all give us such a warm welcome and cannot do enough for us, to Joy and Hassan who remember us at breakfast each weekend, remembering what we like to order, to Dobbs in the bar and Sylivia, who are both so friendly and welcoming and also the housekeepers, Kamila, Bozsena and Magda, who work so hard to make the rooms so presentable. Those are just the people we know by name but our appreciation extends to the whole team. If you need to stay at a hotel in the area, you won't go far wrong by choosing the Mercure. We're confident in the knowledge each week as we head back to Hatfield that the team will look after us and if any problem does occur, it will be dealt with efficiently and professionally. Collapse

This is easily one of the pricier hotels in Hatfeild with not much to justify it. I stay here only because my company reimburse me for business travel and I am currently working on upping my status with Accor hotels. If it weren't for both of those I would not stay here again. On average I stay here 2 nights a week for work in the area. The hotel is very dated and the halls are like a labyrinth trying to find your room. Most if not all of the bathrooms I've seen have at least a bit of mold on the walls near the ceiling that could easily be wiped away by staff but yet is still there. The bathroom lights are on a motion sensor and will turn off every 30 seconds while you're in the shower unless you wave outside the shower to keep it lit. In a couple of the rooms I've stayed in this motion light will continuously turn itself on throughout the night along with the noisy vent that is attached to the light. Needless to say this is less than ideal when trying to sleep especially for a light sleeper. The hotel restaurant is a bit overpriced for what they offer and there is nothing within walking distance. There is a set price list I think it's about £20 for 1 course, £25 for 2 course or £30 for 3 courses. The closest shops or restaurants are at least a 5-7 minute drive from the hotel. At the end of a work day the last thing I want to do is drive somewhere to get something reasonable to eat. Collapse

Stayed 2 nights with 4 other family members. Have been 4 times between us in the last 2 years and have really enjoyed it. The rooms were lovely. Clean spacious and comfortable. The staff Tony Joy and Sylvia were amazing. The food was average on the first night. Orders were wrong and service poor. Breakfast ok but long wait for bacon and eggs. Tea and coffee weak. Cold lunch ok. Had to order and pay upfront in cash to samir for evening meal upgrades. Was told soft dri ks excluded on all inclusive so paid for them. Evening meal saturday was cancelled due to no chefs. Offered chinese take away. Table was booked for 730 pm got meal 930pm. We made the best of a bad situation. Sunday morning Tony gave us a bottle of wine to say sorry. A discount voucher or refund was not offered. Memorable weekend for all the wrong reasons. Come on Mercure we know you can do better. And to the General Manager please do not give me the standard reply that you have given to every other review. It is disrespectful and does not take ownership of the situation. Collapse
