We were attending a party in the local area and this hotel catered for all our needs. It was a good location, although a car was needed to get to the main shopping and tourist areas. Car parking was plentiful and free. We were greeted in a friendly manner on arrival and the receptionist advised a wedding party was in the hotel but we had been put right at the back of the hotel away from any noise. We could not fault the room, it was large and spacious, clean and tidy. The room was freezing cold when we arrived but once the heater had kicked in it soon had us warmed up. The fruit, nespresso coffee machine and bottle of water in the room were lovely touches. The room was quiet but some distance from the reception, on occasions this felt quite a trek. Some areas in the hotel looked a little tired and in need of refurbishment but it was all clean and tidy. We could not fault the staff, they were always friendly and helpful but there did appear to be a shortage of staff. On Saturday night only one staff member was around at midnight and he was attending to reception, manning the bar and preparing food. There were several people queuing for drinks in the bar, others waiting for food and there was a queue at reception. (Our key card kept locking us out, and this involved three long treks to the room and delays queuing at reception before the key card worked). On Sunday morning, the two young ladies in the restaurant were rushed off their feet serving breakfast but they coped with the queues and handled visitors requests professionally. We could not fault the hotel, it just needed a bit of an overhaul in the public areas. the staff were very friendly and helpful. it just felt that there were not enough staff working particularly during those periods when the hotel was busy. Okay, pros and cons. Pro: the Bathrooms have obivously just been done, they are very modern, very clean and have nice showers (with angled and overhead facets), motion sensing lights etc. Cons: the rooms have not been done to match. They feel very dated, the walls are dirty, one of our lights didn't work and the floor had a dip in it. Con: the cleaning. When we first arrived we had to change rooms because the first one had a horrific smell of a strong detergent, which made it hard to breathe. I found spiders (large ones, 5cm accross) in both the main room and the bathroom. The toilet roll had not been changed for our arrival either. Con: the restaurant. I think this is entirely seperate to the hotel - we tried to order room service and not only got the wrong order, it was over an hour late and we had to speak to 3 people to get a sensible solution. Had 2 people arrive to give us the food, and in the end had to take it down ourselves due to the confusion. (When ordering I made sure they had it written correctly, so lack of communication between staff seems to be the main flaw here). Pro: when it finally did arrive the food was good (if a little expensive) and once I had gone down in person the manager did sort the problem. Con: the beds. The double as actually two twin beds, and very soft mattresses so the line between the two was rigid and uncomfortable - we slept in seperate beds effectively. Pro: A convienent location (post code takes you straight there). Con: the proximity to the main road means you can hear traffic if you are in the front of the hotel. Collapse

We liked this hotel but we provably caught it at a quiet period. All rooms seem to be the same but are spacious and comfortable. This is a remarkably quiet place considering how close it is to two extremely busy roads. Collapse

Quick night stop over. Easy place to find from the a1 and plenty of free parking. Room was decent size, and nice enough but on border of needing a revamp. Compared to a lot of Novotels I have been in lately it was a slightly worn. Weirdly for an AccorHotels, the press reader app wouldn't allow free downloads. This is really annoying, as it's one of the main reasons I choose the group hotels. Also didn't work in the Stevenage ibis the night before so perhaps a network blip. I tried three different devices and the app map didn't show either hotel. Check in was quite late on, about 1030pm but reception lady lovely (14th oct). Check out less so. Had to wait five mins for the receptionist to find some report for a cleaner while all I wanted was to hand in my room key. Neither the cleaner or receptionist seemed to see me, which is odd seeing as I'm 6'3 and 17st. Room was on first floor of annexe 207 or something- it was really noisy outside the room with people chatting and shouting until very late (certainly 1am. Can hardly blame the hotel for that, but the layout means everyone has to walk the same way, so get a room as far away from the stairs as possible. Overall, not bad but I've stayed in much better Mercures. Collapse
