I booked one night in the Mercure Glasgow City without looking at the reviews on Trip Advisor, on the basis of previous experience of the brand. When we were on our way, out of curiosity, I looked at some of the reviews and began to regret having booked (non refundable of course). Fortunately, it turned out to be a much better experience than the negative reviews suggested. It's not as fresh and modern as most Mercure hotels, having previously been part of another chain, but the reception and dining area is recognisably Mercure and the service was very good. The carpet in our bedroom has seen better days but the bedroom was perfectly fine - yes, a little small from front to back but with enough room between the bottom of the bed and desk, and wide enough to have taken a wider bed. There were only two power points, both at the desk, and I always like a power point at each side of our double bed to charge mobile devices and, in particular, my Apple Watch! Our room (206) looked straight in to the next building across a lane and I was a little worried to see strings of lights on the wall opposite, having read reviews about noise from a night club. Fortunately the night club must have been on the other side of the hotel because we were not disturbed by loud noise and the secondary glazing kept road noise to a minimum. We did hear muted music from a function in the hotel but it was barely audible and did not keep us awake. The room was a little warm in the early hours but I wouldn't blame the hotel as there was a big increase in the outside temperature overnight. The front panel of the safe had been broken and I didn't risk using it - management please take note. The WiFi came with stern warnings about use of your data and my wife chose not to agree to the terms. I logged in via Facebook and have not so far been bombarded with unwanted emails. The speed was fine and the signal in our room was OK. We were offered a deal on dinner - full three course menu for £18 each instead of the normal £22. This turned out to have no restrictions of choice other than a supplement of £7 for steaks, though initially the server told us that if we chose steak we would have to pay the full price of each course on the a la carte menu, which would have cost us approximately the price of a starter or dessert over the price we actually paid. I asked to speak to the manager who pleasantly and quickly sorted out the issue. This was a very reasonable price for a good meal, the tempura calamari starter being the highlight for me, and the prawn cocktail for my wife. Contrary to other reports, the breakfast area was not too crowded on a Sunday morning, though by the time we left there were no free tables (but there were seats and tables in the foyer where you could have taken your breakfast). I saw a member of the kitchen staff check the amounts in the hot food dishes. My only minor complaint would be that there appeared to be no fresh fruit; otherwise there was ample choice. The location, close to George Square, the stations and Buchanan Street, couldn't be better. All in all, I can recommend this hotel for a stay in Glasgow. Collapse

We found out we were booked in for dinner that night but we already had plans and the receptionist changed it to the Saturday night . The bedroom was pretty small but with a huge bed which was spotless . Breakfast and dinner were good . (Fire alarm had gone off on the Sunday morning and the breakfast room was packed when we got the all clear but was quickly cleaned up and fresh food put on the buffet ) Great value for money considering its location . We stayed at the hotel overnight to attend a gig in glasgow. The room was so small you could barely move. The windows were filthy, there was no room to move around the bed to get to the toilet. The bed itself was on wheels and kept moving. The bathroom was also badly needing done up. The place looked dirty and the sink was leaking. Definitely not worth the money we paid for. Would never stay there again. If you are a tall person you would have no chance of being comfortable. Collapse

Hotel is very dated, could do with some freshening up but, if its a basic & central hotel you want then its great! Rooms are small and very warm. Was all going well until we went for breakfast, was waiting at reception as requested by the sign to pass on our room number and the old lady was too busy sitting chatting rather than doing her job! Anyways passed on the number and told to take a seat anywhere - there weren't any! After one of the staff cleared a table we got a seat and went to get our breakfast. Its all buffet style but there were no eggs and no potato scones, I don't eat a full fry so this left me with sausage! Asked the girl behind the bar if these were going to be replaced to be told 'the cook will be out soon to check' which is great when there is nothing! Anyways about 10 mins later one of the staff brought out some eggs and they did bring me a couple over, these were swiftly sent back as there were not cooked! Back in the room and housekeeping chapped the door at 10.30 am despite check out not being until 12 noon! So if you expect a bit of a lie in after a night out, don't! And it wasn't just our door, she chapped very room on the floor. When checking out these point were mentioned to the receptionist who did refund the breakfast charges but, could not answer as to why housekeeping was knocking doors of guests who had not checked out, any other hotel I have stayed in house keeping get a list, clearly not in here! First time at this hotel. Great location for Glasgow very central. Car park only 5 min walk away but can’t be expensive £24 for the night. I found the rooms to be very small in this hotel. If you were a big person you couldn’t get between the bed and dressing table. The bed as usual in all the ones I’ve stayed at are very big and comfy. Decor and furniture is really needing updating.
