This lovely old hotel is large, sitting in lovely grounds and is staffed by the friendliest crew! Personally, I felt the dining room and bar felt cool but the food was delicious and the bar staff were great. I had a Premiere room which was very lovely with a four poster bed, good size TV, comfortable furniture and good size bathroom. It was also nice and quiet with little noise from elsewhere in the hotel making it through. Collapse
Disappointed from start to finish

I stayed here for one night.... First impressions when arrived, a grand building... But then.... First check in... Card machine not working. Then had to go out side in the snow to get to my room. The path was not cleared and took very small steps to get to room. The paths to reception were clear... Felt like second class. After ordering my room service I waited for it to arrive. 15mins later I heard voices outside, this must be my room service!!!! Oh no.... All of a sudden a lady walked into my room... She said someone is in here and went out and closed the door... In shock, I sat on the bed wondering what the hell happen. At least I had my clothes on.... Then 5mins later the person that booked me in, knock on the door to say sorry, someone did not book you in correctly.... Well it was you... Here is a voucher for a free drink in the bar... I said I'm having room service after a long day and would not be going to the bar... Then my room service turned up.... I asked for a orange juice and lemonade.... I got a separate orange juice and a separate lemonade... The second thing wrong.... I asked for tomato sauce.... I got a tomato juice... Really how hard can it be.... I asked for no relish... Again it had it in.... So the next morning I go to breakfast... Still path iced up and even more dangerous.... Breakfast was disappointing... No hot plates... Luke warm food.... I leave to go back to my room.... And find I can not get in as my key card was deactivated due to my room being given to someone else... So I have to walk back to the reception to get my key card redone. The bathroom was cold with no heating in, showers water pressure poor. So my stay here was a miss match of poor service and standards. Collapse

We opted for the spa package with a 3 course meal and breakfast and also stayed for a second night b&b. We were very impressed with the reception, bar area and main restaurant rooms, but not so much by the bedrooms. The meal we had on the first night so was lovely we booked in again for the second evening, can’t rate the food enough! The Bedroom we had on the first night was above the main function room which on a relaxing weekend away from the kids wasn’t ideal as it was extremely loud and until 12.30-1am! After an awful nights sleep we requested to move rooms which we were told was absolutely fine and the next room was much better. I did overhear someone else complain of the same issue the next day too so just be warned about this if your not involved with the function below. The bedrooms could also do with modernising throughout. Very comfortable beds however. Main positives- helpful and friendly staff and amazing food. Needs improvement- noise levels (especially so late!) and maintenance of bedrooms/bathrooms Collapse
Very good deal although spa could be improved

We found a deal on LastMinute for 4 of us and we each got 1 night's stay, 3 course meal in the hotel restaurant, breakfast buffet and a 25 minute spa treatment plus access to the spa facilities - for £99 each which we thought was excellent. First impressions were good - efficient check-in and polite staff everywhere in the complex. They even took our bags to the room for us as we were too early to check in! Good free parking and hotel was easy to find. Lovely grounds with a lake/fountain, lots of greenery - would be pretty for a wedding. Rooms were good - I am sure that we got an upgrade because our room had Netflix and the most enormous bed that we have ever seen - so thanks for that! :) We were given complimentary robes/towels and slippers in the spa and we had added on a treatment each. Everyone enjoyed theirs except for me - my massage was not firm enough despite me stating that I had some back issues I needed ironing out. Also my free 25 pedicure was a bit painful! And my nail varnish must have gone off because it would not dry after 20 minutes... so I was a bit disappointed. We would have liked to have been offered a drink/snack of some sort after our treatments because we were just sat there doing nothing and the water cooler was broken... the beauticians all freelance so I think that this is why there is no consistency... they didn't even know what massage we had booked in for -we had to let them know. This could be improved by management. The spa has a decent pool which looked a little murky and they were having some temperature issues... but the jacuzzi was good as was the sauna/steam room and ice room. I have to mention that there is a male attendant (which we were pre-warned about) who knocked 3 times on the women's changing rooms asking if he could come in.... we were half naked!!! I shouted this at him so he gave us time to cover up... then he proceeded to spray some cleaner on the bathroom mirror... he made us feel very uncomfortable actually and I meant to complain but my family told me to leave it... Food in hotel was good as was the service. Gin and tonic in the bar cost nearly 9 quid!! Lovely festive ambience in all of the rooms and our breakfast the next morning was superb - the beans were cooked to perfection although scrambled eggs instead of fried would have been nice. All in all we really did enjoy our stay but there are a few niggles which let down their otherwise perfect professionalism. Collapse

My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights to celebrate my birthday. Our room was in the Masters House, an annexe away from the main building. This had its advantages in that it was very quiet and also quite quaint with wooden beams in the room. It was well appointed with everything that you would need but a little on the small side. The bed, however, was extremely comfortable. The downside was that the room was rather cold as the heating didn't seem to be working very well and the radiators were only tepid. It was late November and very cold outside with overnight frosts. However the hotel staff provided us with a portable electric heater and the problem was solved. The community rooms in the main hotel were spacious, especially the lounge bar area, where we ate on a couple of nights. The other two nights we dined in the main restaurant and had most enjoyable meals. The breakfasts were also first class. One of the attractions of this hotel is the grounds which includes many mature trees, a lake and a boat house. All the staff were very accommodating and friendly. One other downside was that after a visit to the centre of Shrewsbury, which is about 3 miles away, we returned mid afternoon only to find our room still hadn't been made up. We understood this was due to a shortage of staff on that particular day. We would stay here again and enjoyed our visit very much but there are a few minor problems which need some attention.
