How greedy can a chain hotel like Hilton get .. I had a booking at this hotel on March 1st and was caught in Durham in the middle of the best of the east ..tried everything to get to the Edinburgh therefore the hotel ..just impossible no trains no cars nothin..so I call the hotel to be told by a gentlemen bad luck we will charge to full because you are non show ..and hang up on me and made sure he charged me immediately for no show..well done Hilton... a perfect way to train your staff.. so I call the reservation and spoke to jade cross who was very apologetic.. yet no action was taken,, the gent in question who was rude has a code SZYMONSZYMIK I found out from the reservation team . So technically I stayed and there fore decided to write this review so you can all be prepared to pay the price for the greediness of Hilton if you are trapped in the worst snow storm the UK has had in 50 years .. but then I understood because we book via hotel.com and the Hilton wants to make sure they maximize their revenues .. ... Than you Hilton for having a sense of compassion for trapped travellers.. hope you made your monthly budget and your GOP ..enjoy your greediness as we will never book you again.. regards Collapse

Conveniently off the Royal Mile, easy walk to train station just make sure exit by Princes street and walk across bridge otherwise not so easy to find. Big room and bathroom, clean and modern, but quite a trek from the elevators. I had been traveling for about 24 hours when got there and the front desk clerk was very helpful and accommodating considering my slightly bleary state. Breakfast buffet had a lot of options but the hotel had a large conference in and not enough wait staff for the number of people, the second day was better. The only real negative was that large groups of smokers were just outside the main doors and, not only did you have to push through them, the lobby reeked of cigarette smoke. Collapse
Good location, not much else is good.

We stayed 6 nights in this hotel last week. I was with a group and we booked two rooms. We wanted to be near the royal mile and there are MANY options for that but in discussing our options I fought for this hotel because I genuinely believed it would be the best. Like anything, there was good and bad but I always write my reviews with the mindset that people reading them are those who are trying to make a decision about where to stay, so let me share our experience and try to help. First of all, the location is great! It is literally a 15 minute walk or less to anything you might want to do in the area, from the Castle to Calton Hill and there are plenty of Whiskey and Gin distilleries within that distance as well. You are also right next to Waverly station, which is a huge transportation hub, so if you need a train, one is right at your doorstep. Five stars for location all the way. What brings down the rating of this hotel is the hotel, its service and its staff. As I said, we booked two rooms and luckily they were near each other. However, one room was quite poorly designed in that you open the door directly into a wall and then one person has to scoot towards the restroom to allow the other person in so that you can close the door. Very odd, but since it was a corner room, not a huge issue. The first thing I did was walk to my second floor window to look out at the view, but the windows were SO dirty, it was difficult to see anything. The other room was the same. We did see the top floor getting their windows cleaned from outside the building on a walk back to the hotel towards the beginning of our stay and held out hope but unfortunately our windows were never cleaned. We had issues with housekeeping on a daily basis and this was not just a problem for our two rooms, as we listened to a rather heated argument between another neighbor and staff towards the end of our stay. “Don’t you dare call me a liar!” I heard a woman yell outside my door, so I headed to the peephole to see what was going on. On the way, I heard pulling on our door and got a bit frightened, but when I got there, two of the housekeeping staff were speaking to an older woman in the room next to me. They had pulled the “Do not disturb” sign off of our door and were telling her that her room hasn’t been cleaned because she had her sign out. She vehemently disagreed, saying that her room had not been cleaned in 3 days and that she had put the sign on her nightstand specifically to make sure someone came in. She was very angry and refused to let them in asking for a manger. Around 6 p.m. we heard someone vacuuming, but the whole ordeal was uncomfortable. We discussed coming out to speak to the manager as well when she arrived as we had been having similar issues but we needed to leave for dinner by the time we heard the vacuuming. In our experience, when check out is at 11 and check in at 3, most hotels get the rooms cleaned during this time. However, we would be out until late in the afternoon and return to an uncleaned room. After the second day when we needed our bins emptied and some fresh towels, I put the bins outside the door around 4 p.m. Later they had been changed but that did not help us with towels. On the third day, we returned by 5 and the room was still dirty so I called housekeeping. They told us they had just not gotten to our room yet (after 5) and expedited the cleaning. Someone was there within 15 minutes. Mind you, there was only one day during our stay when we left the DND sign on the door. Towards the end of our stay, we were tired of it and just sought someone out and asked for what we needed. I was disgusted to learn that I could not be given clean cups when I asked the cleaning staff, because in her words “we just rinse your dirty ones in the bathroom sink. We don’t have extra”. No wonder both our rooms had dirty cups. To the contrary, the other room had advised us that they were woken by housekeeping one morning in the middle of our stay asking what time they would like their room cleaned. They said this happened around 8 am. Regardless, this hotel DESPERATELY needs an overhaul in housekeeping. It’s an important part of a person’s stay. Sorry to go on and on about this. When we are only staying a few nights we find it easier to just not have housekeeping come and it is rare we use them, but I have never had issues like this in the past. The breakfast buffet is decent but definitely not something I would pay for. Also, my partner witnessed items from a table being cleared returned to the buffet area, including butter and silverware. I am very concerned about the cleanliness and sanitation of this hotel and therefore cannot give them more than 2 stars. One for the location and one for the room itself being modern with a comfortable bed. I hope they focus on service and cleanliness and improve in the future. I would personally not stay here again but try one of the smaller boutique hotels on the Royal Mile. Collapse

I recently stayed here with my elderly parents on a DB&B package. There was a mix up with my booking and was told at 3 different times I had only booked B&B and despite having proof I had booked dinner and being assured it had been sorted they continued to try to charge us for the dinners. Very annoying and upsetting being made to feel you were trying to cheat them. I had booked with Hilton direct and the error was made by the reservation department. Despite the upset the hotel was superb. I had stayed here about 5 years ago and it feels and looks like a completely different hotel! They have given it a full refurbishment and I highly recommend it. The breakfast however was very disappointing - superb food and choice but at best the food was barely warm. Such a shame after all the money spent on the fitting and fixtures that they can't keep food hot! Collapse

We had a nice stay for five nights at the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton hotel on North Bridge in Edinburgh. It was extremely easy to reach after leaving Waverly Station, so long as you take the Princes Street exit and walk back across the bridge, rather than the one with all the stairs! The hotel lobby was very attractive with a sweeping staircase. The restaurant and bar area were fine, although we didn’t eat in the restaurant. We did go one evening after reading their online menu and feeling like one of the dishes on it. When we got to the restaurant however, they told us that the online menu was not in use (so why have it then?). Basically the only options were steak and burgers, so we went elsewhere. We booked an Executive Room which gave us access to the Executive Lounge. Our room was very large and faced the street – the North Bridge – with partial views of the Royal Mile. There was slight traffic noise, although we were there in winter so had the windows shut. I expect it would have been much noisier in the summertime. We found the service in the Executive Lounge to be excellent. There was wine from 5pm to 8pm. Instead of the usual snack foods found in most Executive or Club Lounges, this seemed to have one hot dish and one vegetable dish, and the vast majority of guests were using this as their dinner. A great way to save money, I suppose, but a bit of a shame with so many lovely pubs and restaurants within close proximity to the hotel. We purely use thed lounge for a predinner glass of wine or two and for a peaceful breakfast. Breakfast was a continental selection in the lounge, but we discovered that you could order any dish from the main restaurant and there was no charge for this. Breakfast was very enjoyable, with a self -serve coffee machine. Most mornings the person staffing the lounge made coffee for us. We found the main reception desk staff to be the worst problem of this hotel. There was generally no-one on the desk so you had to wait until someone appeared. I don’t think they knew the answers to any of my questions. Unfortunately instead of saying that they didn’t know they seemed to tell us any old thing, and then we later found out that it was wrong. I have taken one star off for the inefficient reception staff. If the Hilton could train these staff better, it would be an excellent hotel and a great price. Collapse
