Expected More from a 4 Star

I wish that I could give this hotel a higher rating, because the location is amazing and it has the makings for a perfect stay. However, several things happened that were really discouraging for a four star hotel. Details are below, but in a nutshell we were disappointed with the staff's ability to solve problems with our room in a timely manner. We visited over Easter weekend 2017 (April 13-16). We arrived at 11am on Thursday the 13th. Though our room wasn't ready, the staff at reception was very kind and stored our luggage. They also promised that they would turn the room around quickly so that we could check-in sooner (since we were traveling with our 7 month old daughter). We were able to check in at 12:30pm and our room was nice (Double Deluxe). We noticed that it was very hot when we entered. The person helping up with our luggage told us that the heater was on and he switched it off for us. After an afternoon of exploring, we returned to the room and realized that it was still very hot. We opened the balcony doors for a while but had to close them when we put the baby to sleep because the street noise was SO loud (even on the 5th floor). My husband went downstairs at 8pm and complained about the heat. He asked if we could switch rooms to a courtyard facing room so that we could open the door, but he was told that it wasn't possible. He asked for a fan, but we were told that there wasn't any. Needless to say, our baby didn't sleep at all that night. By 2:30am, I took my crying baby downstairs with me and demanded a new room or for a refund so that I could find another hotel. Marc was at the reception desk that night and he was extremely apologetic. He told me that he couldn't give us a new room because so many people were complaining about the heat that all of the courtyard facing rooms were taken. (This was extremely upsetting considering that we had asked for one 6 hours earlier!!) Marc informed us that the hotel can only have one system running at a time (either A/C or heater). The hotel was still set for heat because there were a few people that were cold. Seeing that nothing could be done that night, I begged him for a fan. He found one for us, but it was broken. He went back to the basement and found another dusty/dirty fan that worked. We were so grateful to have SOME air that we didn't even care that it was dirty. Finally around 3:30am everyone was able to get to sleep. The very next morning (Friday the 14th), I asked to speak to management. I spoke to Francesco who was also extremely apologetic but basically told me that nothing could be done to switch rooms. The hotel was fully booked since it was a holiday weekend, but the air con would be getting switched on that day. While the air con made everything infinitely better, I would have liked for management to do SOMETHING to make it up to us. Francesco said that he would try to give us an upgraded room on our last night, but he never followed up with us. While I understand that a new room wasn't a possibility, ANYTHING to rectify the worst hotel stay of my life would have been nice - a discount on that first terrible night, a bottle of champagne, anything! We also had an issue with our mini-fridge in room 514. It was hardly cold. We bought some cheese and it was room temperature when we pulled it out of the fridge to eat it. The staff told us that the mini fridge was working fine but that it doesn't get colder than that because it's not a full size fridge (that's crazy to me because every other hotel that I've stayed at has a cold fridge). They were able to store our cheese in a refrigerator downstairs, but it was still annoying and not what I expect from a four star hotel. We also had a lamp in the room that needed a new lightbulb. We called downstairs for one, but it always took at least 2 hours for the front desk to respond to our issue. My husband went downstairs to get a bulb himself. I was also disappointed with the cleaning staff. That dirty fan that we were given on our first night was NEVER cleaned. It spat out dust bunnies in the room and the cleaning staff didn't even try to clean it off. Also, we had served wine in the glasses provided in the room, and the glasses were never replaced (over the course of three days!!??) On a positive note, the bed was very comfortable and the shower had great water pressure. The wifi worked splendidly the entire time as well! Breakfast was great. There was a good variety and it was always well stocked. Also, like I said before, the location can't be beat. It's right off of Place Massena and close to everything that you would want to do. Overall, I would not stay here again only because I felt that our problems were not sufficiently well addressed. Even at check out the person at the front desk asked how the stay was. I told him that it was good aside from the first AWFUL night, which was the worst night that I ever had at a hotel. He didn't even respond to my statement or ask what he could have done. Big disappointment. I expected a lot more from a hotel that I was paying 200 euro/220 euro per night for. Collapse

Stayed here recently on a European holiday. When we arrived the room was small, hot and Aircon was not working. We could live with the small room but when we asked for someone to look at our Aircon we were advised it was turned off until May. Instead we were offered a small fan which had little effect. You could not open the windows due to the traffic and street noise. This lead to two very uncomfortable nights sleep. I asked for an ironing board but after it arrived I discovered it was in disrepair an badly stained. Staff seemed less than helpful and although pleasant did not go out of their way to assist. On the positive side the position was good and breakfast offered a large selection of food. Collapse

I stayed at the Hotel Massena for three nights with my 7 yr old son during the Easter holidays. It was our first visit to Nice and the hotel location was perfect. Less than 5 mins walk to Place Massena and the lovely Promenade du Papillon with its lovely water fountains and playground for children. It's also a short walk to the Promenade des Anglais and the beach. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel, but preferred instead to eat at cafes either at the lovely Flower Market or Place Magenta which was close to many shops. For other meals the two local restaurants I would recommend are Chez Olive and Casa Nissa. The hotel itself was fine for us. I would have given it a 5 star rating if our room was a bit more spacious and the Wi-Fi connection stronger. The room was very clean however with a comfy bed and good facilities. The bathroom was tiny, but was clean and the shower worked well. The flatscreen TV on the wall had BBC1, BBC2 and Cbeebies channels included. The staff at the reception desk were always helpful when asked a question. Checking in and out was quick and they kindly let us have our room at early at 1pm when we arrived. We were also able to check out at 1pm instead of midday at no extra charge. They gave us a map of Nice and the local area, and also printed out a bus timetable for me when asked. There was also a complimentary bottle of water in our room when we arrived. We were in room 518 and had a nice little balcony to go out to and get some air. We had no issues with noise and actually found the hotel to be very quiet. We caught the tram from Place Massena to the Gare Nice Ville (just two stops) and then the train from there to Juan-les-Pins which had a lovely sandy beach if you're looking for one! We also caught the bus number 100 from Nice Port to Monaco. The journey took about 50 mins at mid morning time. The route is very scenic with great views of the coast. On the way back we stopped off at Beaulieu-sur-Mer which was a lovely little village to spend time in. We really enjoyed our trip to the Côte d'Azur and glad to have picked the Hotel Massena as our base. Collapse

Spent 2 nights here when visiting Nice for a weekend. The location is excellent, right in the centre and close to everything. It's a short walk from the airport bus which was handy too. Our room was great, it was very clean and comfortable. Not huge but big enough and it had a nice balcony area too. Price was good. Breakfast was included and was fairly decent. It got busy during breakfast time and was hard to find a seat if you come at the busy time so it might be handy to be aware of that! Staff were friendly. I'd recommend it. Collapse
