I stayed at the Maslow Hotel for three nights last week on a business trip. It was one of the most comfortable hotel breaks I've ever had. The reception staff were very welcoming upon my arrival. The room was very comfortable with a bed that lulled me to sleep instantly. The things I rate most: a powerful shower that exfoliated my skin. A fridge that actually chills rather than acts as additional shelving. Air con that successfully chilled the room. A cushioned head board for sitting up in bed - so so comfy. Unique soap with knobbly bits. Hair shampoo that smelt nice. TV with built in channel guide. After the room - the gym. All three running machines worked. A big plus. The hotel. Airy bright and spacious and all the staff were very friendly. A bar area at night for relaxing in with tasty bar food. And then breakfast - just simple tasty delishis fare. Breakfast can be hard to get right. It can be bland and dull. The Maslow gets its absolutely spot on. Best breakfast in Joburg. And finally the grounds... type of hotel grounds you would expect in some glossy beachside resort. Reasonably big pool. Lots of sun loungers around it. Very well manicured green gardens. I can't comment on the value of it as it was business related. Overall I loved the Maslow. Would happily return there again and feel fortunate to do so. Enough said. Collapse

Good location. Poor Service. Great G&T's!

We had to wait for seemingly a long time to check in and then the reception was not friendly. It also took a long time to get served in the bar but the G&T's are worth it! Rooms are clean and the beds are really lovely. However there is a lot of noise from the road. Treadmills and air-conditioning in the gym need upgrading. Will probably stay somewhere else next time despite super convenient location. Collapse

We booked this hotel for a treat for our wedding anniversary as we were planning to be in Johannesburg for a friends 40th. The lady who checked us in was friendly and we enjoyed a little friendly banter with her. She allocated us a room on 5th floor which has a nice view over the pool. The room is nice, nothing extraordinary, but comfortable. The reason I rated this hotel average is due to the bar/restarrant service as well as an issue with the front desk which I feel was handled badly. Bar - the waitron, we found out on the second day, was friendly but they were extremely slow. They also were not very knowledgeable of the bar menu and drink options. My one gripe on the first day was when we ordered the bread and dips from the menu, the chef decided to change two of the three dips as compared to what the menu described. The waitron also did not even know/realise that it was changed. Furthermore, we ordered it as it was the only vegetarian option on the menu and they gave us taramosolata [spelling?] which has fish roe in it. At the breakfast room, even though it was farely quiet, the simple items like cutlery and teaspoons were hard to get and we have to grab from the other tables. The waiters were not very friendly either. With regards to the front desk - on the first day my husband went to the room without me and I did not have a room key. When I went to the front desk to ask for a key, they asked me for my ID [which I know to be standard procedure], at which time I advised the desk clerk while showing him my drivers license, that the room is on my husbands name and perhaps to verify me, he can call the room. He obliged to call the room but then asked my husband to rather come down to fetch me as he cannot cut another room key. I don't underatnd this - I get security but not to the point of inconvenience. The hotel should have strict rules on security and in this case should the insist on check-in to get all the names of parties staying in the room to avoid this. The receptionist was quite rude about it as well. As I was in a rush to get ready for a dinner party, on my way out I told the front desk that I wanted to speak to the duty manager who did not come out by the time my Uber ride arrived so I told the front desk clerk [the same one] my room number. The manger did not even bother to leave a note in the room to query why I asked for them? We also booked the spa whilst there. The ladies were quite friendly and the only disappointment was that the jacuzzi/wet area was not open which I feel we should have been notified off as this was one of the main reasons we booked there. Overall, we paid quite a sum of money on this weekend as a treat and I would rather have spent that at a neighbouring 5-star hotel in the area where we would possiblely have had better dining options and better service for the amount of money we spent that weekend. A hotel like this should not be average. Collapse

Extremely disappointing service across the board! On arriving at The Maslow we were "greeted" by a gruff receptionist who practically barked that her system was down and was unable to assist...there was no hello, apology, welcome or anything you would expect of a hotel claiming to be 4*. Cleaning staff opted to having hallway discussions, yelling to each other from one end to the other while standing outside guests rooms all at 6am! Breakfast was an ordinary, mass produced conveyor belt; while there were plenty of tables available on the terrace or inside, it was suggested by the host that we instead take a seat within whiskers distance of a large bin (same size as the table) that was catching water from the ceiling. The host, for whatever reason, didn't seem to understand why I might not wish to eat my breakfast accompanied by the smell of old, dirty ceiling water. On leaving, we opted to traverse the halls with our luggage rather than bother concierge and took a seat in the reception area - we advised concierge of our location and requested they advise us when our pre-booked transportation had arrived to take us to the airport. (we were 20 mins early).. we had to clarify this with the concierge a number of times and repeatedly state our names. We sat around for 15 minutes past the expected transportation arrival only to FINALLY be addressed by the concierge who advised that our car had been there the whole time! Our driver actually said the concierge had told him we were not listed as guests and they were not able to help. Thankfully he did not leave and we did not miss our flight. Having travelled through South Africa on our honeymoon, The Maslow was our final stop before our onward flight home - we had become accustomed to the hospitable and friendly nature of those in the tourism industry across South Africa. I am only glad that The Maslow was not our first stop else we may have turned around immediately! The Maslow was also the ONLY hotel throughout our entire trip that failed to acknowledge our honeymoon. It appears that The Maslow, rather than being an upmarket hotel, is a large factory for housing corporate travellers and hosting their conferences. Avoid if travelling for any other reason! Collapse
