We ended up booking this hotel for the MAC Championship. It came down to this one or the Courtyard by Marriott across the street. After seeing both, and sleeping on a King size bed instead of the Queen size which is all the Courtyard had, we knew we made the better choice. It was gorgeous, had a beautiful view of Canada and the waterfront, and were treated as King and Queens. Would not hesitate staying here again. Collapse

One of the older Marriotts in the system and it suffers from some location problems even though it is “right Downtown”. The entrance is on the first floor of the Center and the Marriott lobby is on the third. There is barely room for two cars in the small entrance loop to pass and I saw the whole entrance plugged with cars numerous times during the stay. Because parking is so limited, the valet is the best option if you’re going to be driving in and out. The parking structure directly across the street is still $25 per day and valet is $35. A quick Extra $100 expense over the weekend if you’re not expecting it. Another bottleneck is the elevator system. I heard complaints about waiting for three elevators from someone in a packed elevator trying to get to the lobby during “rush hour”. Not a problem at off hours but plan ahead. The Rennaisance Center was designed with flash in mind, not utility as far as I can see. The lower 3-4 floors are a maze with poor signage and absolutely no color coding - all cement and glass and metal. Leave breadcrumbs if you want to try and find the restaurants for instance. The concierge lounge was simple but had great service. Rooms and bed were fine, but Marriott seems to be lacking in some simple helpful additions lately. A hook or rack for towels or a place to hang a shaving kit would be a welcome addition. Lack of ventilation fans shows the buildings age as well. The Lobby Bar had decent food as well, though it can get noisy. Collapse

I'm a frequent guest at this hotel. The website espouses that the construction is complete, a brand new renovation. I stayed on the 15th floor. It sounded as if the construction was in my room it was so loud. The construction is scheduled to cease for the evening at 1030 p.m. However, it was so loud that even setting the TV volume at 50 was insufficient to drown the noise out. I am told it is ongoing. I have a headache from the absolute incredible volume of the drilling. Collapse

My husband, daughter and I stay at this hotel every Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. We run in the Detroit Turkey Trot, so we get a discount on the room ($130). We've done this for about 9 years in a row now. Before this year, I would say that our experience has always been pleasant. This year, unfortunately, I describe it as disappointing and below average. I booked the room, like I said, at the same time I secured spots in the Turkey Trot (July 2016). Written directly on my online reservation was a request for, "2 beds instead of a King." Makes sense since we have 3 people and our daughter is 13 years old. I brought a printout of my reservation receipt with me when we checked in, however, upon check in (5:30 pm), I was informed that all of the 2-bed rooms were taken. Mind you, this is a LARGE many-story hotel. The person checking me in said they could get a roll-away bed in the room, however, at no extra charge. Ha... as if I was going to pay extra for a roll-away bed anyway! I let them know I was disappointed, but tried to just go-with-the-flow. After all, I was there to enjoy the holiday. We got our keys, trucked our luggage down the hall and up the elevators to the 11th floor, found our room and lo and behold, none of the keys would open the door (strike 2). We used a phone near the elevator to call and someone came up and let us in, however, told us we'd have to go back down to the desk to get the "new keys" because we were given "old keys." Really??? As soon as we went in the room, I called about the roll-away (I didn't trust that we were on a "list.") and the girl said it would be about 30 min. I asked if we had to be there and she said "no" so we left, had drinks and appetizers in the hotel bar and then ventured off to dinner in Detroit. Upon returning to our room around 9 pm, we opened the door to find (of course) no roll-away bed. (Now 3 1/2 hours after check-in.) (Strike 3) I called again and the service woman told me it would be a 1 hr, 45 min. wait. Okay, WHAT? I explained that 3 hours prior I was told it would be 30 min. She said there were 7 people ahead of me.... WHAT? I asked to speak to a manager. She told me they were all busy at the front desk and she'd have one call me back. (Strike 4) At 9:30 p.m., I couldn't take it anymore... no bed... no call from a manager. We wanted to get some sleep, as we were all running our 5K in the morning. So, I go down to the lobby, wait in line, get to the counter and recount my story to a "manager." He sent a girl right then and there to go find me a bed. He also told me that next time, I should call prior to the stay to secure 2 beds. I showed him where I put it in the reservation. Usually when you call, they say, "We can't GUARANTEE." Also, I would have thought that booking in July for Nov. would be early enough to secure 2 beds. When asked if that's all he was going to do for me, he stumbled a bit and then I said, "How about free parking or SOMETHING for my troubles?" He said he couldn't give me free parking, but he gave me this ticket and said it was good for discounted parking. I kind of just stood there, looking at him and then he said he'd take my $28 bar bill off my tab. *SIGH* "Okay," I said, "So the bed is on it's way NOW?" He said yes. About 10 min. after arriving back to my room, the girl from the front desk showed up with a bed. By the way, when we checked out of the parking garage, the man at the booth said my coupon was completely useless. (Strike 5) Anyway, I hate when you feel like you're getting poor service because you got a discount on the room! This is the hotel at the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit. You'd think they'd have much better service than that. PLUS, they know how busy it is that night before Thanksgiving!!! They should have been better staffed or something! When I was waiting in line to talk to a manager, I heard another couple checking in and they requested 2 beds also and were given a king, except they had 4 adults staying in the room!!!! So, what did the manager do for them? Of course he happened to magically find a room with two beds! Good things: Parking garage is cheap and there's a bridge to the hotel, rooms are newly remodeled, views are great, hotel bar is cool, easy access to people mover Collapse
