Stayed at the hotel for Youmacon, and from check in to check out the staff was always exceptionally friendly and upbeat, and made check in and check out quick and easy. Even the cleaning crew was nice and sweet when I saw them in the halls. The building is beautiful, both it's exterior and interior, and the rooms all have wonderful views of the city. The quick access to the People Mover made this hotel so convenient, along with the CVS and food court in the building. Definitely will come back for years to come. Collapse
A Nice Place to Stay While in Downtown Detroit

Staying for 3 nights, we got to know the hotel and the area fairly well. Here's my assessment: THE GOOD The view from our room, high above the river and across from Canada was truly spectacular. The only negative regarding said view was the ever-present red and blue (colors alternated) neon lighting that wrapped the building next to ours at our eye level. With the room-darkening shades drawn it was not visible at all. However, with our blinds open to enjoy the river view, we felt as if we were starring in the Seinfeld episode in which Kramer's apartment was bathed in the red neon glow of a nearby Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurant. Every staff member I encountered at any time, at any location throughout the property could not have been more friendly, helpful, and welcoming. No exceptions. The fitness center was enormous and had lots of machines from which to choose. The view of the river while on the treadmill also made the workout a bit more fun than usual. Volt, the restaurant/bar in the lobby was good for a cold and rainy night when we didn't want to go out while nearby Granite City Food & Brewery was packed. The view of the river was nice. We shared a burger (excellent) and shrimp tacos (a bit bland) and opted for a small Caesar salad instead of the fries/chips. Salad was good, but fries looked amazing. Liking to enjoy some local fare, a recommended dark beer from Corktown was also a surprising treat! The location of the hotel is great for easy and safe walking to explore restaurants, various event venues, the riverwalk, sculptures and other public art space, historic spots, and the architecture of such a storied city. The People Mover (which stops inside the RenCen) is an easy way to get the lay of the land by taking the 75-cent, 15-minute loop to help determine where you might want to explore later on. THE NOT-SO-GOOD Despite the fact that our room looked clean upon entry, an odd odor immediately drew us to the floor near a dresser, where we unfortunately found a fried pork rind on the carpet. Can't say I've seen that before! Add one to the minus column for that. I recognize that mattress comfort is indeed personal preference, but this one was particularly uncomfortable for both me and my husband. A bit too soft and sagging into the center (and we are not large people), meant that after night #2, we were longing to be back at home in our own bed. The climate control was challenging. We were unable to find the right temperature because the glass wall let in so much cold air. When the blinds were closed and the entire wall of windows was covered, we baked if we didn't lower the thermostat. Similarly, when the blinds were open, you could feel the cold emanating off of them and freezing the room, hence the need to bump up the heat. (Note: it was cold and windy during our stay). ALL-IN-ALL It was a nice visit and if returning to downtown Detroit, we would likely stay again. As already mentioned, the staff was wonderful from start to finish! It was fun to explore downtown, but it was also nice to have enough going on within the RenCen to appreciate being hermetically sealed in inclement weather. Collapse

Our company had a huge conference here and they booked us here. This hotel is huge and gorgeous. The staff was very very helpful and accommodating. The rooms were a very nice size and the bed was very comfortable. The hotel is located inside sort of like strip stores. There is a Starbucks and CVS and several different little restaurants through out. They have both high rise rooms and low rise rooms. All views are great. As indicated I was there for business so the food they prepared for us both days was just phenomenal. We didn’t really have to lift a finger. I would definitely staff here again when in Detroit. The hotel is right across from several little must sees..museum like and GM. The only con was that my bathroom tub was stopped up and I felt like I was standing in a pond while showering because the water was rising up my legs. I was only there two days /one night so I didn’t mention it but I should’ve for the next guest. Other than that it was an awesome stay. Collapse

The hotel staff are amazing and extremly helpful. Every request I made no matter how silly (a minilla envolope to mail something), was met with urgency as if it was the most important thing going on. The housekeeping woman, Tequela, was very pleasant and ensured my room was spotless at all times. Tiffany at the Volt bar should also be recognized for her friendliness. The hotel itself is one of the Renaissance Center’s 7 towers so there numerous food, drink, service and retail options which can all be reached without ever stepping outside. The hotel bar, Volt, has a decent selection of food and drink options, but as to be expected, they are at hotel prices. I had an amazing view across the Detroit river into Windsor, Ontario, Canada. I found it pretty cool to think you are looking into another country from your hotel room. I would suggest asking for a higher floor as the views are better. The only think I disliked was that the hotel does not employ their own security. They utilize what the State of Michigan calls “Security Police.” Though they are what they are through a state public act, the Marriott might be liable if something were to happen and a guest got injured. Though I’m unable to mention my exact job title, I can say with 110% certainty that regardless of Michigan’s rediculous public act, a US Supreme Court could and would not hold up the legality of Michigan allowing Security Guards to act as Law Enforcement Officers. Though they all seemed polite and professional, they are not LEO’s and it is dangerous to allow them to wear anything that says the word “Police.” Other than that, this hotel is amazing and within walking distance or a very short drive from just about everything in downtown Detroit. I was very disappointed with my stay at this Marriott property. The room had dirty sheets that were supposed to be changed. In the process, another guest was checked into my room while I was staying in it. I only found out because my key did not work and went to the front desk for a replacement key. They said that is why the guest came down and said someone else's things were already in the room. The manager then went to the room ahead of me without telling me to check out the room rather than accompanying me to insure everything was okay. I only found this out because I complained about the sheets not being replaced and the bed being made to look like they were replaced. I know something was not correct because loud music was coming from my room (I did not have music playing when I left my room for dinner) when I returned to it but could not get in due to my disabled key. This is not what I would expect from a Marriott property. Collapse
