Stayed here Dec 16th for what should have been a relaxing break. Went to book a table for dinner only to be told restaurant closed for private function. Complained no advance notice if this and that had we been told would not have stayed , was bluntly told emails were sent out. ( was offered taxi to go eat out). Food available in the bar which was obviously crammed due to no restaurant and full of rowdy offensive men! ( receptionist on check out confirmed there had been issues) Ended up with over cooked steak as room service! Home and husband leaves poor review following request from Marriot for feedback to find that reception manager informs him email was sent. Receive copy of said email which was sent to an email address no longer used and not the one booking was made by. Best bit however is the fact that it was sent approx 2 hours after we complained. Clearly someone thinks we are too thick to notice!! Rooms/decor - tired, wallpaper peeling, grouting around bath mouldy and dirty. Looks stunning from the outside but looks are definitely deceiving. I’d suggest staff take a trip to Manchester to the Victoria and Albert to see how a Marriot should be! Collapse

We just wanted to thank you and your hotel staff for such a fantastic stay at the hotel on the 9/10th December 2017. Every member of your staff we engaged were friendly, attentive and very professional. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone and everybody went out of their way to make our staff enjoyable. We have stayed in many hotels around the globe and this short stay is certainly at the top of our favourites list. The superior room (264) and the bed was very welcoming, lovely and warm and the two corner windows overlooking the gardens and the golf course was mesmerising, especially in the snow. Dinner in the Tempo bar/restaurant was very good with the scallops and fillet steaks, from the Cast Iron menu, cooked to perfection. We had a few massages in the Spa and used the leisure facility again spot on enjoyment. All in all a highly enjoyable recommendable stay at the hotel. Thank you again and please pass my comments onto your departmental heads and management. Collapse

we went the 6 0f us, it was my mums 86 birthday. we have been to many afternoon teas and what a joy they all were, I mean at other venues, so we expected more or less the same. oh how not to be in this case I am sorry to say. I only tell the truth and write honest reviews, so here we go, we were down stairs and it was cold not a Christmas sparkle any where. the waitress came and asked if we wanted tea or coffee, then out came the drinks in plain white chunky tea and coffee cups, the sort you have in a road side café. then the cake stands came and no china plates just the bog standard white plates. with about 12 or 14 tiny finger sandwiches, egg, ham, and tuna. the cakes were not good at all we couldn't slice the scones open they fell apart so dry. some jam dropped in a dish like it had just been churned out of a jar. and a pokey tiny dish with a bit of cream in it. the coffee was almost cold I had to ask for some more hot water, and the tea was so weak it was almost none existence. I'm not a person to complain on the day because I didn't want to spoil the day any more than it had been. so I telephoned at 10,oclock next morning to ask to speak to the manager, who the girl on reception said he was busy and would telephone be back, but now as it gets to 4.30 I don't think that is going to happen. I am only writing this review because when the bill arrived it was a massive £106 pounds with an £11 service charge. that's £17.66 each which in my eyes was a complete rip off. we wont be back ever. This is a memorable hotel. The location is outstanding, and the hotel is set in awesome greenery and very scenic surroundings. The hotel building itself is fascinating from the outside, although it becomes quite bland and "corporate-style" anonymous on the inside. The hotel is a 3-dimensional maze, corridors take you all over the place and a map is useful to find your room, with the additional problem that you need a good sense of the third dimension with small flights of stairs going up or down to keep you at the same level, even if you don't get lost. Good bar, and very nice restaurant (even though it serves the exact same menu found in each Marriott cast iron grill across the UK). Service is reasonably good - some people are more service-driven than others. Not sure it's good value for the rate paid, but I spent a comfortable night in this hotel. I believe that I will return, and that is enough said in a review. Collapse
Good hotel, but watch the morning traffic if heading South

Striking and characterful from the outside but very standard corporate feel and decor inside. Breakfast is good (it’s help yourself to cooked, cereals, pastries), rooms are fine (much like any Marriott). Grounds are impressive but on business trips you aren’t likely to benefit much from that. Dinner options are pretty good - restaurant or Sports bar (limited menu there - eg burgers, Fish and Chips). If heading towards Derby in the morning the short run down to meet the A61 gets busy by 7:30 and by 8 it’s really slow progress. The A38 South is also heavily congested from 7:30 onwards. Collapse
