The Best place we've ever stayed in Marrakech

We have stayed at the Mamounia (an anniversary treat), places in Hivernage and the Palmery areas as well as many other riad style hotels. But I have to say that this Riad style hotel was by far the best place we have ever stayed during our stays over the past 5 years. Why? not because of the decor (although that is stunning-especially the new white wing) and not because of the roof top view which is actually one of the very best we have seen giving a view over the entire medina and mountains-apparently we were lucky that there were no clouds on the days we stayed there. Not because of its location-even though we were amazed at the ease of walking around-especially compared with our stays in the new town where everything has to be done by taxi which we hate. Here you walk out of the hotel and in one minute or two at most you are in the centre of the souks. The reason we loved this place and will return and recommend it is because of the wonderfully caring staff. We felt that nothing was too much trouble. Even when they were clearly very busy they still made sure we were looked after. The ladies dont speak english but they did seem to understand and brought us things that we asked for. Sometimes we had to wait for about 20 mins for our mint tea but it was always brought with a smile and a friendly word. Felt that we had been staying with friends here not so much like a hotel. If you like really formal places where service happens at the click of a finger then this may not be for you. Also if you have kids then I think we would have worried about disturbing other guests if they screamed. Lots of little seating areas and quite a few stairs to hidden spots so not great if you have serious mobility issues. But we loved the informality and hospitality and warmth-everyone seemed to be willing to go the extra mile for us-even helping us out with lost luggage at the airport. Also amazing food-the chef is incredible-all authentic morrocan cuisine but served so beautifully. We are foodies and had a cookery lesson for half a day which was really good. We ate our food that we prepared and that was really fun. Only one little gripe and that is that when we were on the roof terrace sitting near the lovely flowers and herbs one of them seemed to be bit overpowering-I think it was a mint or lemony smelling plant-had to move away and ask to sit somewhere else. The lighting at night is romantically done but tricky if you want to read a book. We requested for a lamp and got one right away so it wasnt a problem really. Otherwise hard to fault. Thanks to all the guys here for making our stay wonderful-we will be back-that's for certain. Collapse

I stayed at the Riad Star with two friends for three nights for some winter sun and a chance to relax and we were so sad to leave! It was exactly what we needed. Abdou, Aziz and Mohammed were so helpful - there was nothing they couldn't do for us. Our welcome meal was easily the best meal we had all holiday and the view from the rooftop was stunning, particularly at sunset. Grab the chance to book yourself in for some time by the fire if you can, too! Everywhere you go in the Riad is beautiful and tranquil, and it is only a stone's throw from the souks. We walked everywhere and saw the majority of the main attractions of the city. The staff provided us with lots of helpful tips for getting around and not being duped! Would also recommend getting hammam and massage at the Riad. It was lovely to be able to relax and feel at home between treatments. Cannot recommend this place enough! Collapse

Firstly we arrived when Aziz was not on duty and did not have a good welcome and wanted to leave immediately. This somewhat soured our experience and although Abdul did try to make this up to us we never quite recovered and did not have the best stay. The willingness of Aziz to come and get us if lost and sort taxis gave us the confidence to go out and about and this and the proximity to the souks was the biggest asset to staying at this Riad. we booked the Ebony room because it had two bathrooms however for the duration of our stay the upstairs shower was unusable. This was reported 4 times (as was the TV not working) and each time a promise was that it would be sorted. This meant sharing a bathroom and the reason we booked the room and the Riad was negated. We stayed 5 days the breakfast although well presented and taken on the terrace in a beautiful setting became monotonous and the quality was variable. However on two occasions we ate lunch at the Riad and this was well presented and tasted great. Lastly on leaving day we were asked to leave our room by 12 (although we were not given out room on arrival until 8pm) I asked for somewhere to freshen up and change prior to our transfer to the airport at 3pm and again we were promised the use of a room but this did not happen. Be aware of this if you have a late flight we went to the souks expecting a shower back at the Riad and felt awful dressing in our travel clothes filthy with dust. Collapse

First visit to Marrakech and I chose this RIAD from all of those available based on the reviews. The Medina app is excellent (would suggest a tweaking of app to show walking options between destinations like other apps), loan of prepaid phone excellent as well as unlimited supply of mint tea. The service is uneven due to poor staffing, that is clear. Aziz, definitely understands customer service and is a KEY ASSET for the owners of this RIAD. He compensated for the unevenservicing: towel replacement, no water in fridge, no soap in dish....Long wait times for breakfast service - pancake or egg arrives cold.... The staff were good but they are understaffed & perhaps new...less experienced. I own a rental property and the above is critical. Noise level is high - from white room area & our room adjoined with another (but we didn't use) and could hear everything. Hammam + massage was great but I agree with other reviewer that attendant was sick and coughing during the session. Attendant didn't want to accept credit card payment but Aziz intervened and all turned out. RIAD traditional meal was EXCELLENT...a bit pricey. I intend to visit again but not sure if would choose this RIAD for the above reasons. Collapse

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights at this very good Riad; our first trip to Marrakech. It is a beautifully decorated place; with historical resonance- the former home of Josephine Baker! The gem of the place is the lovely staff who are happy to take care of your every need if you need them to. They offer collection from the airport which we took advantage of. We ate a home cooked (very delicious) tagine on our first night; but the staff were equally happy to recommend restaurants and even made a reservation for us at Comptoir! As cabs cannot drop you off at the door, they made sure to arrange to be at the drop off point to collect you and walk you back to the Riad at night. We ate a lovely breakfast each morning to our own timetable and wherever we wanted to in the Riad - on the roof or next to the plunge pool. We had some issues arise during our stay and these were dealt with professionally and quickly by the staff - especially Abdou (the manager). All in all a memorable and lovely trip to Marrakech, made more do by staying at Riad Star! Collapse
