We booked a two room apartment for the night for a family night out at the Velodrome. The location is ideal for Westfield and the Olympic Park, and sits behind automatic gates. Arrival was slightly chaotic, although the desk manager was doing his best to get the staff working... we checked in to our room, only to find out that the maids had set up the additional sofa bed in the wrong apartment and we had to move. Plus, there would be an additional charge for the sofa bed that hadn’t been charged on the website. The apartment was spacious, and at first glance clean. However, the laminate floor (which was badly fitted) obviously hadn’t been mopped recently (coffee stains near the bed) and the apartment was generally dusty. Linen and towels were clean (although two duvet covers had small tears in them). The toilets clearly hadn’t been bleached in a while, the cooker was dirty and some of the cutlery was dirty too. On return from our night out, no parking spaces were available. Apparently there should have been two spaces left empty in addition to mine, but someone must have parked without authorisation. Given I had paid an additional £20 for secure parking, I feel this is unacceptable. The overnight security found a solution but this left me uncomfortable about the security of my car. Beds were comfy, but we were woken by someone playing extremely loud French rap music at midnight... not sure what we are used to!! Our rooms faced away from the railway, but early morning the noise from the tracks was noticeable. Overall we were disappointed - we had previously had a very good experience with Marlin apartments in Canary Wharf, but Stratford was just OK Collapse

After scouring the internet for a cheap(ish) hotel in Stratford, London I stumbled across these guys. I've never stayed in a serviced apartment before but the price was good and for one night, I thought I'd give it a go. The entrance into the apartments is gated, which for a woman travelling alone, made me feel reassured. They're not much to look at from the outside and the reception desk is there for functionality rather than a focal point but the guy that welcomed me and sorted my check-in was efficient and really pleasant. I opted for a studio apartment and I was pleasantly surprised by its size. I was expecting something smaller but the space was great. It was clean and had everything you'd expect to find in a hotel (towels, iron, ironing board etc etc) with the addition of an equipped kitchen - more than adequate for cooking my dinner for the night. The apartments are close to the railway line but if you want to be close to amenities and travel routes then this is kind of expected. You can hear the trains but at no point did I find them intrusive. In fact I slept with two windows open. I think if you look at this like staying in a mates flat rather than a hotel then you'll overlook the occasional scuffs on the wall and communal areas that need a bit of attention. The one thing that did grip me a bit is the £200 security deposit required at check-in. To me, this seems excessive for an overnight stay - especially when the apartments are covered by many terms and conditions you have to agree to anyway - including no parties etc. when damage is more likely to occur! This could put me off returning...especially as I'm still waiting for my bank to release the deposit back onto my card (nearly a week later) Aside from the deposit it was a pretty good first experience of a stay at a serviced apartment. Tidy but just not clean. Dust everywhere . Stain everywhere on walls. Sofas . Curtains just not worth even 2 stars. Be careful says Parking available but actually its limited and you have to reserve it for £20. Or park 5 mins away at westfield.

Unless you’re train enthusiast , don’t bother ! Overall very average. A number of times per year my husband & I have weekends in London – enjoying what the capital has to offer. We have on many occasions stayed at Ealing at the Doubletree Hilton (which is excellent) The only down side the rooms are quite small which is usual for hotels near and surrounding London. With the above in mind, and the fact I thought if we stayed in a different area – we’d do different restaurants in the evening etc, I decided to book Marlin apartments. The price was comparative and I had stayed in one at Aldgate (penthouse, some many years ago and it had been excellent) On arrival which was easy to find with Sat nav – we had been told unless extra was paid; check in wouldn’t be until after 3pm, which was fine – as we obtained parking permit quickly, in their secure gated car park. I called at their public area toilet (which was, I have to say; dirty and not great first impression) –then headed into the central London. The positive to Strafford Marlin is, its approx. 5-7 mins walk to the train station and Westfield shopping centre – the area is busy and with plenty of shops, restaurants, cinemas and theatre within mins of the apartment. Its Zone is 2 which made tube per day cheaper than staying at Hilton in Ealing. We arrived back to check in at 6.30pm on Friday 1st Sept – whilst I will say 100% my booking stated, I would need photo ID such as passport or Diving licence – and the card used to prepay had to be present and in my name. I hadn’t got my passport with me, but I always have photos on my iphone of the photo page – therefore thought this would be more than sufficient – after all, I had NEVER been asked by a hotel or apartment prior for this for this extra booking in detail. It’s also worth pointing out – within my job as an Office Manager, I book accommodation for staff Nationwide – always paying on my company debit card and often I don’t know staff names staying until day of arrival, as we move staff to suit work reactively. With the above policy in place, the business could never use Marlin – we use Flexi-lets to name another company and never have problems either with checking in or quality of their apartments. Reception or Concierge (as they call it) is very small and staff whilst friendly – I think would benefit from uniform (but this is personal thing) as I think it sets a certain standard. Together with myself, there was a young lady whom had been trying to check in since 3pm, she too had forgot her passport but again like me; had a photo of this on her phone and the card she’d paid with originally was present. She explained she had had to cancel her room and re-book paying extra (for the same room) in her boyfriend’s name who drove to the apartment to provide his passport ( not sure how far he’d travelled to enable this) My husband and I explained living 3 hours away we would not be doing this and if the ladies could offer no solution a Manager should be contacted as it was late on a Friday and we wasn’t prepared to be messed about like the younger lady. I did say, if I were to be a fraudulent person – I had gone to some trouble – having got photos of both mine and my husband’s passport, purse full of cards in my name and even one had a photo of my husband on it- what I would also state is that the company secure additional to the rent of the apartment a £500.00 bond in case of damage – & told this secure hold can take 5-10 days to release – which could pose problem depending on personal finances. As there is no check out procedure carried out with guests , you’re entirely in their hands to say if you left the apartments as found. (I took plenty of photos on entry and exist) After 45 mins we managed to get checked in after the ladies cleared this with their manager. The younger lady was most upset that we’d not had the 3.5 hours hassle she had suffered nor had to pay extra. The reason she was given, was I’d stayed prior – although I’m not sure if this was checked – it was many years ago but might still register on their system – I’ll give them benefit of the doubt and say this was the truth or perhaps they knew my husband and I wouldn’t be quite as obliging to spend 3.5 hours plus, trying to sort something that fitted their ridiculous policy. When they do have your passport all they do is photo copy it – so in the end they have exactly what both the lady and I had –a photocopy! After all the hassle to enter the apartment you would expect it to be of really high standard and the clientele to be of such too, after all they seem very particular whom stays. This is not the case. The rooms have not been updated since I stayed with them (poss more than 10 years ago) – it’s still the terracotta colour furnishings of sofa and rug etc they dress all their properties in – both of which have seen cleaner days. The flat is very average / just satisfactory – nothing to get excited about. It major problem is , it isn’t modernised for use – there is no central heating (electric rads on walls) when we stayed it was roasting hot and doesn’t have air con either. You could open a window, but as you are sat almost on top of the railway line – you’d not hear yourself speak if you opened the windows – the train noise is very loud and they pass on average every few minutes throughout the night – I wouldn’t stay on the above basis alone. But coupled with its other faults just adds to the overall picture. Kitchen – no kettle (we had to request one, which we did get with extra tea bags ) Loose coffee provided but must be used in cafeteria – not one to use, so useless Kitchen starting to peel in places and marks on wall above sink Bathroom – Flat above must have had a leak and this has come through – you can see it’s an old stain – but this has just been left. It’s wouldn’t take much – possibly few hours to sort at most, to strip, Zinsser it and emulsion again. Shower screen doesn’t come far enough over for the fixed shower head so water sprays over On a good note – which is important to remain balanced review – the water is lovely and hot and great water pressure. Bedroom – wardrobe doors no longer stay shut – but small problem and room is fine. Ceilings – have random sello- tape – no idea why The cleanliness of the overall flat is – satisfactory – not great but certainly not as bad as the disabled toilet I’d seen on arrival. Their Managing Director states in their literature – they ‘put guest satisfaction above all else, with simple ethos of quality, service and valve and constantly striving to surpass their own high standards’ ………this is certainly not true and far from it. ‘we want to exceed your expectations each and every time and that’s how we became serviced apartments industry leader’ – if this is leader the rest of the competition must be very poor – although personal experience suggests other providers are much better. I think Marlin have over the years – rested back on the laurels and not ploughed profits back into the company – which was seen in the poor maintenance, lack of upgrades to buildings, and staff. On coming back following our evenings out – we were greeted by a drunk man hanging out of the flat window above reception main door - and 3 security men – this we felt just added to the full picture of Marlin – if they’re are aiming at high end clientele with their over complicated daft check in – they certainly are million miles apart. In a highly competitive market – you are advised to seek alternatives which are equal in price but much better. Also, when the emailed to ask for me to complete questionnaire on my stay – I did so- and at end of the survey said – ‘error press return’ – to be then told – ‘questionnaire didn’t exist!! ‘ - They only want to hear good feedback not constructive perhaps Collapse
