We had a lovely visit with the whole family to the Marine Hotel yesterday for Santa Sunday. The choice of food in the carvery was superb and absolutely delicious. We found the staff very efficient and helpful and thank you for managing to keep the 10 children in our party well entertained with face painting, arts and crafts and of course the main man Santa! We enjoyed a overnight stay here with our dog in one of their balcony rooms. The service from all the staff was excellent and the fresh seafood served in the restaurant from their new head chef was some of the best i have tasted. Highly recommended.

As the title above suggests this hotel stay was good (indeed excellent) in parts and less good in others - but nothing a bit of training and some modest investment couldn’t rectify. The purpose of the stay was for my wife and I to go back to the town of my birth for the first time in over 30 years for 3 nights to celebrate my 60th birthday, in company with my father (aka Grandad) who coincidentally celebrated his 85th birthday the same weekend. We had booked a suite for us and a separate room for Grandad. Initially he was put in room 209 and when given the keys was told to “dial zero if there are any problems”. The only problem with room 209 is that not only is there no telephone, there isn’t a jack in which to plug a phone. I suggest avoiding room 209 unless that issue is rectified. We got his room changed for nights 2 and 3 - and I must state here that the various front desk staff with whom we dealt during our stay were unfailingly excellent - a great credit to the hotel. For example my New York based son had telephoned ahead to arrange a specific wine to be waiting in my room. The wrong wine was waiting. The front desk had it changed - but pretty poor execution of an order in the first place. Likewise my wife had asked ahead for a bottle of Prosecco to be waiting on ice for our arrival. It was not in the room when we got there. Training needed I suggest. There was no heating in the hotel on arrival but the fault was rectified by 2200. Radiators are a bit of an issue. The bathrooms are fitted with electric towel radiators which are scaldingly hot and without any visible means of control or ability to switch off. Potentially hazardous to young children, I would suggest. The main conventional radiators in the bedrooms would benefit from individual thermostatic valves I would suggest, thus saving the hotel money and giving the guests a greater choice than ‘on or off’ as at present. Food. We ate in the Marconi restaurant the first evening. Food was ok, nothing special. The design of the restaurant is a little problematic. We had a window table to the right of the main entrance door. A perfectly good table but the raised dias of tables in the centre of the restaurant obstructs the view of the staff sitting at the waiting station who seem more interested in their smart phones than they do on checking whether service is required. For example the bowl for Moules sat in front of my wife for 2 hours presumably because she chose not to get dessert. The only time we got service was by flagging down staff going through the main door to reception. Training required here too. Breakfast was satisfactory, Buffet on Sunday and a la carte on other days. Staff much more on 5he ball than in the Marconi Restaurant. Personally I don’t like the set up for tea and coffee - would prefer a pot on the table. Location. Superb and views to match weather permitting. Beds very comfy. Plentiful parking. Collapse

What a great hotel!! had a wonderful two day stay with my elderly parents. view from our room was stunning. Could have sat all day watching the rollers come in. Staff fantastic and nothing too much trouble. very relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast very good, buffet style but all very freshly cooked. Good value for money in the bistro/bar. Only criticism would be lack of electrical sockets in my room no 116. nothing available at the dressing table. one in the corner of the room to facilitate kettle, hairdryer and charging of devices. Really not too much of a problem though. I understand the hotel is being refurbed in jan so am sure this will be rectified. Will definitely return for another stay soon. Collapse
