After reading so many good reviews on TripAdvisor, we decided to book into Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. We were warmly received at the airport by one of Mandarin Oriental's staff. We had booked prior to our arrival one of the Mandarin's luxury chauffeur driven cars, for our transportation, which was waiting for us on our arrival with cold scented hand towels & water. A short comfortable drive to the hotel. On arrival at the hotel we were warmly welcomed by the hotel team & each given a flower garland & cold scented hand towels. We were immediately escorted to our beautiful Garden view room with an amazing view of the river, pool & gardens. On our way to our room, we were joined by one of the reception managers who warmly greeted us & showed us to our room. Our check in was done in the comfort of our room, I thought this was a very nice touch, specially after a long flight. After we were checked in another staff member arrived to talk us through the room facilities & how everything works. While settling in to our room, we received welcome drinks, arrangement of fresh flowers with a card & a birthday cake was delivered to our room to wish my husband for his birthday which was the following morning. Thank you Mandarin this was a thoughtful touch. The room we stayed in was recently renovated in a tasteful colonial style decor. The room is an open plan studio with a comfortable bed, small bathroom (separate), sitting area, cupboard bar & mini kitchen area (separate). Perfect for two people for a short stay. The room has a fridge with a few complimentary drinks (non-alcoholic) & a complimentary fruit bowl. The bathroom is stocked with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap & the unusual amenities like tooth brush, cotton buds, cotton wool, talc powder, sewing kit, comb, nail files etc. The bathroom had a separate toilet & separate shower, but no bath tub & only one basin. A tight squeeze for two people. The room & bathroom was clean, although the windows with a view could of been cleaned before our arrival. Nice bathrobes & slippers provided. A very handy steam iron, which was so much nicer than a normal iron. Our turn down service was nothing special, but you are left a little card with a quote & a orchid flower on your pillow. I expected to receive a small gift (Banyan Tree Samui does this), chocolate or biscuit (Four season Samui does this) with a turndown service, as we had received in the Four Season Samui & Banyan tree Samui. So I was a little surprised that the Mandarin lacked these little extra touches. The photo's on TripAdvisor don't do the hotel justice in my opinion. Mandarin oriental Bangkok, is is a beautiful elegant hotel. Gorgeous fresh flower displays all over the hotel which gives a special touch. A nice selection of restaurants & bars. Although, if you don't eat during the specified lunch hours then they only have one restaurant, The Verandah which is open for all day dining or you have the option of going for an elegant high tea at the gorgeous Authors' Lounge with beautiful live piano music in the background. The staff are attentive and friendly throughout the hotel. Although, no different from the Four Season service, so it wasn't anything new to us. However, I would say that at The Verandah resturant the waiter staff can do with some more training, as they didn't match up to the hotels standard. I had also noticed depending on what room/suite you book, depends on the extra attention & fresh flowers on your table while dining. In the evening we dined at Le Normandie French resturant. An elegant French dining experience with beautiful fresh flower arrangements, stunning chandeliers & gorgeous decor. A wonderful 3 course dining experience with wine pairing & a few complimentary entrées from the chef. The food was delicious & beautifully plated, waiter staff are trained well and so polite. I loved the handmade chocolates we received after dessert, as another complimentary treat to end off an amazing 3 course dinner. I had mentioned to the waiter how delicious the chocolates were and just before we left he brought me a small bag with a few of the chocolates to take home with me. We also were given delicious macaroons to take home with us before leaving. Highly recommend this resturant. Unfortunately, the spa was fully booked in the day, so we didn't get an opportunity to try out the spa, but hope to try it out when we visit again. We also never got to try out the high tea at Authors' Lounge, as my husband was too full after a late lunch, but it looked absolutely beautiful, with a very friendly piano player playing some soft background music, champagne on ice & 3 tier cake stands with a selection of savory & sweets in a beautiful setting. Although, I never got to try it, I would recommend you do, if you plan to stay at this hotel. I would suggest that you book your dinners & spa treatments well before you arrive, as when we arrived we were told all restaurants were fully booked, but luckily we had booked at Le Normandie in advance. I so wish I had been informed to book the spa in advance, as I would of loved to have a few treatments. The Bamboo bar had a wonderful atmosphere after dinner for drinks & live jazz music. A busy bar with people waiting to get a table and next door is a small cigar lounge with a selection of cigars, rum, cognac & whiskey. Overall a great experience & a lovely hotel, but it's not the only 5 star hotel around. It has old world charm, but not the best hotel I've stayed in. I'm glad I visited to see for myself what the Mandarin hype is all about. I think because we have stayed in a few nice hotel we tend to compare. I wish we could take the best part from each 5 star hotel and combine them to create a truly unforgettable hotel. However, in all fairness this is a great hotel & we enjoyed our short stay & the wonderful Thai hospitality. Collapse
Still one of the best experiences

If you visit Bangkok one should book this hotel only for the experience of it. Plus the location is also great. The hotel is situated next to the river. It is easy to go in to the city by bts or taxi.

My wife and i have tried to visit each year over our wedding anniversary. The Hotel is lovely and the food is terrific, but the service is what sets this property apart from literally all others. The staff is so well trained and helpful, that your every need is taken care of. The new General Manager, Greg Liddell, continues the tradition of the former leaders, and Guest Relations Manager,Mayuree Laolugsanalerd, is so capable, Donald Trump should appoint her his Chief of Staff. We are already looking forward to returning next year. Collapse
