Before booking our one night stay at the Maldron, I checked reviews and expected a decent hotel; but it was much better than that. A building of some character, the Maldron has obviously had a lot of money spent on it recently and renovations have been tastefully completed. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the carpeting and of the tiling in our bathroom; but there is much more to admire. Our double room was very large and indeed had a single bed as well as a double; and the bathroom was equally spacious. We originally had a room-only booking, but were persuaded at reception by a "special offer" to take breakfast - a good decision because it was excellent and even included the opportunity of a dram to enhance the porridge! We also ate in the Lyric bar attached to the hotel and the seafood chowder there was very good. Add in friendly and efficient staff, and you will see why we would certainly use the Maldron again if we were to return to Derry. Collapse

In the past maldron food has let it down. It was ok but I've had better. Ideal location in the city centre and nice walk around the walls. It is hilly so might not suit everyone. Collapse

Stayed here three nights as part of a group tour. The hotel is nicely located, clean, with spacious rooms and comfortable beds. The breakfast offers a variety of choices and the staff does a good job. The staff at the reception desk was friendly and helpful. Dinners in the hotel were hit or miss. Some entrees were quite good, some not so good. The appetizers and desserts were always excellent. There was an excessive amount of street noise, but it was the weekend. It kept some in the group awake although I was able to sleep. The biggest problem I saw was the very poor room cleaning service.... worst we have ever run into. The room was clean when we arrived. The two rolls of toilet paper were extremely low, but we assumed extra rolls would be in a cabinet. No cabinet, no extra rolls..... used all the toilet paper and tissues the first night. NO ONE should have ever left such a small amount on each roll!! Had to go down in the morning to reception to get our own toilet paper. When we returned that day the beds were made, my nightgown tossed in a pile on the bed, and no clean glasses. Most hotel staff at least fold your nightgown and place it nicely. The following day we left early, returned after noontime, and our room was still not done. Wanted to take a shower and quick nap so had to put the “Do not disturb” sign out. The hotel is fine in many ways. Just expect crappy cleaning service. Crappy service earned a crappy tip. End of story. Collapse

From start to finish we had problems. The lady who checked us in was pushy, I felt rushed and very stressed by the situation but tried to shrug it off. We got to the room, it was very spacious and clean but the remote for the television didn’t work. As said in another review, paper thin walls, both interrior and exterior; could hear every footstep up and down the hall and every car going passed the window. We went out to get dinner and came back to no spaces in the “car park”, we went to reception and were told very abruptly that they don’t have a car park, it’s only first come, first served and said she would get the remote sorted while sitting on her mobile phone. As a customer with a disability and mobility problems my partner had to park far away meaning getting to and from the car was increasingly difficult. On the second day, we were told that a space would be saved in the car park but when we got there, there was a lorry in the way and yet again had to park far away from the hotel. We went out for a walk and came back to a mountain of suitcases in front of the lift doors, several reception staff were all standing seemingly not doing much and left me and my partner to get through the suitcases to the lift, by the time we got there another member of staff put a dinner menu sign right in our way. Throughout our two night stay the reception staff were disgraceful in attitude amd lack of help. The hotel is in a great location and the room was great but between terrible reception staff, lack of parking and paper thin walls it really put a downer on our stay. Collapse
