Mixed reviews on this hotel but we booked anyway, mainly due to the good reduction for a late booked TUI holiday. I’m pleased to say we weren’t at all disappointed, first impressions when we arrived was of a very smart smallish hotel, the receptionist was very welcoming (all reception staff were helpful and pleasant throughout our stay). I had worked out that as our room had a terrace rather than a balcony that we would be on the ground (or basement) level, only wish we had had a problem with noise and been offered a €25.00 upgrade to one with a balcony as another reviewer was! Fortunately we had no such problem and at least the room was cool to come back to after a day in the sun, it was also very clean and well presented and the terrace area was hosed and swept each morning. Food was excellent, good selection for both the breakfast and evening meal, my only comment was that the starters were a little on the large size for us and on some evenings we struggled to then eat the main course, let alone follow with dessert. Still lesson learnt, we opted to just have the salad buffet starter. Again couldn’t fault the staff, all pleasant and well turned out. The roof terrace, sun terrace and pool areas were all very clean, the hotel wasn’t at capacity when we visited so no concerns re lack of sun beds etc, in fact on our last day we had the pool area to ourselves, other guests all obviously out seeing the sights, nice quiet end to the holiday. We would certainly return, our thanks to all the staff who in their own way(s) made our stay so pleasant. Collapse

We stayed at this hotel from 5th to 12th October,We had a room on the second floor overlooking the entrance to the Hotel, Every morning we woken up my the refuse lorries emptying the bins and the sound of breaking bottles. Tip one request a room overlooking the garden quiet and afternoon and evening sun, The food was average reasonable choices waiters okay most of the time, I felt that Plastic spoons at breakfast for cereals and fruit was poor , Teaspoons seemed to find there way to the tables on the third day so you did not have to take your teabag out with a fork, My lasting memory happened on Wednesday before we left on Thursday,we had gone to Herculaneum on the train on catching the return we were jostled my two young men who jumped out of the train as the doors were closing I realised my wallet had gone but to late as train had left the station. I immediately phoned my bank to get credit cards cancelled this was not easy as they wanted to know a/c no sort code etc, i remembered the details and got the cards cancelled before they could be used, Tip have your Bank information with you not in your wallet it will make life easier. On returning to the hotel reception told me i would have to go to Sorrento to report the theft telling me a 10 minute walk well you would to have run to make that, it took me 20 minutes and I am a fast walker.Having made a statement at the police station I had to walk back to the hotel to have it translated into Italian then walk back to give it in then walk back again. My gripe is I felt that the hotel could have been more helpful to a pensioner and provided some transport. This rather left a bad feeling on what had been a nice week and we met some new friends who were very supportive. Collapse

Loved the evening sunset from the rooftop terrace overlooking the lovely garden, also enjoyed morning sunrise from our 4th floor balcony. A very comfortable room. Hard working staff who go out of their way to make your stay a pleasure.

We were so looking forward to our holiday at this hotel. The pics looked perfect, just our style of hotel, the location suited us (Not in the centre of Sorrento but close enough) the rooms looked lovely, and the food appeared to be (mostly) well received. We arrived late, got checked in then had a bite to eat. We'll let that particular meal slip under the radar for now. We thought that after a long day travelling we would relax with a drink, so off we went to the bar. This was out first disappointment. I asked for a beer and a G&T, and asked if I could pay cash. No I couldn't, I was told. I don't really like having to put everything on a room tab, so after a little argument, with a very unsmiling barman, his colleague said it would be ok. He offered to bring our drinks to the table, along with our change. The drinks duly arrived, but I'm still waiting for my change. We both felt like the welcome was very underwhelming from the bar staff. Its also VERY expensive, so we didn't go back after that, choosing to take our business elsewhere. (See our review of Tony's bar!! ) We went back to our room, which on first impressions looked very nice. We got settled in bed, looking for a good nights sleep. NO WAY! We were in room 3, which we were about to discover was right below the Kitchen. There was a constant droning noise, from perhaps some sort of refrigeration unit. Whatever it was it was loud. Then the air conditioning units, 2 of which were directly above us, kicked in. We got absolutely NO sleep all night. We knew there was no way we would be moved during the night, so we suffered the noise all night. In the morning, dog tired and bleary eyed, we approached the guy on reception. We figured he must be used to this complaint, so anticipated a nice apologetic conversation. What we got was a couldn't care less conversation, with a " We MAY have a room tomorrow, or Friday, or next week" Then he dared to tell us that they had not received any other complaints about any of the basement rooms all summer. We think he was being very economical with the truth. VERY economical. We expressed our dissatisfaction with his response and decided we would speak to the Thomson rep at the welcome meeting. We also got a very lukewarm response from him too. He just kept saying he had to check his paperwork, He said this a lot of times. He said that IF we were moved to a room on the higher floors, we would have to pay, up to £500 extra. He also implied that as we had booked a basement room, we should not really expect anything different. We were appalled at his attitude, and it was obvious to us that he had probably missed the "Complaints Training" day, as he did not offer a single word of empathy. He did, however, agree that he had been fielding complaints about the basement rooms all summer. mmm . Its worth noting here, that nowhere on the Thomson website does it say that rooms with a terrace are actually in the basement. He did agree that he would talk to the hotel that day and see us that night. We were eating dinner, and saw the rep arrive. After dinner we went to look for him, only to be told he'd left. Did he leave a message? No, he didn't. We ended up having an argument with the reception guy (A different one, but with the same attitude) and then with the rep on the phone. (We hadn't slept properly for almost 40hrs). Anyway to cut a very long story short, we ended up in Room 7 (Directly opposite room 3) on the Wednesday. It wasn't perfect, still below the dining room, but it was quiet from about midnight through to around 5:30am when the kitchen staff started work, We decided to get on with our holiday, which was now 12 days instead of 14. This is the subject of an official complaint to Thomson's. Breakfast is a combination of warm and cold stuff, which was very very average. However it has to be said that the eggs and bacon etc, was probably cold because guests just didn't close the containers properly. Nice coffee though! Dinner is a whole new ball game. Yes it's not burger and chips, so marks for that, and on the face of it the menu looked interesting. However food is mostly average , with an occasional decent meal spoiled by a number of undercooked dishes, warm and always in sauce which was given different names but always tasted the same. I did have occasion to send a dish back, which was lukewarm, dry and very tasteless. It was replaced with a different, more edible dish. Service was erratic at the best of times, but there were large groups in at least twice, and they just couldn't cope with all these people eating at the same time. We had a waiter turn up with the next course when we had just started the first, and when we said we were still eating, he just stood there, fully expecting to be able to leave the next course with us. He didn't. The Hotel is very nice, with some beautiful furniture, in keeping with its very elegant décor. Pool area is very nice, and we had no problem getting a sun lounger. However we found that the sun terrace on the 2nd floor was much better. More sun all day, and nice and quiet. Nice views from there also. The garden is lovely, but just seems to be wasted. There's a lot of fruit trees, but it doesn't look like the fruit is used in the hotel. Nice to wander around . :) And you have to go to the roof area and watch the sun set. Amazing views. The hotel is also in a good location, just minutes from San't Agnello square, and a nice 20 min walk into Sorrento centre. Its our opinion, and we appreciate that it's not shared by everyone, that this could be great hotel, but it lacks in a number of areas. And Thomson doesn't get off scot free. They should not be selling holidays in the basement rooms, or at least there should be clear warning that there are noise issues. Despite all this, we thoroughly enjoyed our Holiday, and would return to the area. Just NOT to the Majestic Palace. And before anyone at the hotel accuses us of being keyboard warriors, we did complain to the hotel, at the time. Its not a good experience. Collapse
