We only stayed a couple of nights whilst returning our son to uni. The hotel is in a lovely, peaceful part of the city but only about a five minute drive from the centre. The staf were friendly, polite and helpful from beginning to end. We only had breakfast in the hotel, because we had made prior arrangements, but that was delicious. Next time we look forward to trying a lunch or evening meal. We did enjoy a nightcap in the bar where my husband was spoilt for choice with the array of whisky. Collapse

We stayed for four nights, for the daughters wedding. What a treat. Lovely room, helpful Staff. Wedding superb. Breakfast, what a selection. We asked for a quiet room. As we did not to be disturbed by the wedding guests, even though it was our daughters wedding. Room 9 was at the top of the stairs and only had a small landing. Just what we wanted. Collapse

We stayed three nights and overall had an enjoyable stay. I would stay again, but I do have a few reservations. 1. It was a little dusty and bathroom floor tiles loose and wobbly. I reported a poorly functioning plug mechanism, meant water drained really slowly, was told they would get it sorted but didn't. So there's a few maintenance issues. 2. Wifi was really patchy and no iPod docking station. Probably just indicative of the 'oldy worldy' charm but new can meet old! 3. Bar prices were seriously expensive. I'm used to London prices but I got the impression here that they are taking advantage of a captive audience. There's not much else around in terms of bars, pubs or restaurants unless you trek into town you are a little trapped. Ended up popping to nearby Sainsbury's and buying a bottle of fizz. 4. Lastly but not least as this really annoyed me; we stayed for a wedding and the following day simply because we had attended a wedding the night before, instead of being offered the usual breakfast menu and service we were ushered into a side room, told to sit on big tables with lots of other people and presented with a self serve ready prepared breakfast. I don't mind self serve but it simply wasn't what I was paying for. Tea and coffee was on the table in large jugs and tasted awful. We did ask for fresh tea which we got. The selection of cooked breakfast wasn't the same as on the breakfast menu in the restaurant and it wasn't until I looked at that the next day that I realised what hadn't been on offer. It would have been really nice just to have been given an option to sit in the restaurant and have a fresh cooked breakfast, it was what we were paying for and expected! I complained at the time and again at checkout, I got an 'I'm sorry to hear that and I'll pass it onto the manager' but it felt abit like the stock response and nothing short of playing lip service. I've stayed in Macdonald Hotels, and other similar hotels before and I'm afraid to stay that a few things here fell short of my expectations for a hotel of this grading. Nothing that couldn't easily be put right. The women on reception were really very pleasant, housekeeping did a good job and at the end of the day, this is a beautiful hotel, in beautiful grounds and my room was very generous in size, the bed was comfortable and the shower was massive with great water pressure. I would stay again. Collapse

Situated in the SW of the city this hotel is set in well maintained and lovely grounds, it has a short drive - to take you away from the main road. Plenty of parking. It is easily accessible by public transport - a short 8 minute walk to the bus stop and so convenient for getting to the middle of the city. Lovely old building but with up to date facilities. We had a two night deal which was great value. Dinner the first night served in the elegant dining room was extremely well prepared and presented. It also tasted good! Breakfast on both mornings was of a similar standard - I would recommend the Eggs Benedict Royale. Our room was large - at the back of the building meant it was quiet although it didn't have a great view - at least it was trees and not other buildings. The en-suite bathroom had a bath and a large walk-in shower. Staff members were very pleasant and helpful - only one quibble having to wait to be served at the bar while the barman finished arranging the flowers! However a great stay and would return. Collapse

Got a really good deal with our stay and were absolutely delighted. We arrived with a wedding in progress, but we were booked in quickly and shown to our room, lovely at the back of the hotel away from any noise, so very happy. The only downside is that there is very little view! But the hotel cannot be blamed for that! We were warned that breakfast could be busy the next morning with the hotel being fully booked,so we had room service, which was beautifully presented and enjoyable. The room was bright and clean with no problems there, a couple of things in the bathroom/walk in shower that were not completely clean (around sink taps, drain in sink) but nothing major! But maybe management could take note. All in all a lovely time and will definitely be back if we can. Collapse

Had a long wait at reception to check in,standing holding suit bags suitcases with three children for what seemed like forever, finally one of the waiters came to check us in,we had to ask how to get to our room and must've been sent the longest way you can imagine, only two bottles of water in a room for three people sharing, meal was overpriced and the fish certainly wasn't fresh for the price we paid and my mother wasn't impressed with the steak either certainly not worth thirty quid, rooms were lovely as were waiting staff Collapse
