It is always dangerous to go back to the same place and expect the same outcome, fortunately the trip this year was even better... We were familiar with the unusual layout and distance from the beaches, however this year we fully utilised the spa and sought out the beaches that weren't mad busy. This is a perfect hotel for families who do not want the claustrophobia of the beach resorts or who want to indulge in Spa heaven. Carolyn Brown is a star in leading the Spa team and even in managing my children in the Spa was faultless- thank you. We will be returning next year and look forward to the positive changes I know you have planned Collapse

Lovely 5 star hotel room for improvement but very nice. The hotel is up in the Forest Area of Portugal about 50 mins from Faro Airport and there are nearby beaches 15mins drive away. It is best to hire a car unless you just want to rest around the pool all day. There is one restaurant which is only 5 mins walk to but the other restaurants you really need to drive to or get a Taxi as they are only accessible via a busy road. The rooms are all lovely have a small kitchen area with dish washer microwave sink and 2 burner induction hob and a fridge. The cupboards have cutlery and plates glasses and cups but no pans. We presume you have to hire them from reception we didn't need to as we ate our every night. The hotel is 5 star so expect to pay 5 star prices in the restaurants bars and shop. 1.40 euros for a large bottle of water. The hotel has a pizza/pasta restaurant which only opens a few nights and also there is the 5 star restaurant which opened about 3 nights when we stayed in August but was very expensive so we didn't bother. There are two swimming pools which were cool but you needed this as the temperature outside was 34c. The pool on the lower area is for children/adults. The upper pool we heard used to be Adults only which we thought should have been the case as when you wanted a swim in August you had to fight for a space in the pool for so many kids and inflatables it was ridiculous and kids jumping all over the place....an accident waiting to happen. By 3 pm each afternoon you would see people trying to find sunbeds to lay on and having to lay on the grass as there were none available. Maybe if it was a pool for adults only and the kids were asked to use the lower ground pool this would not have happened. Our room was not cleaned before 5 pm until the day before we left. We had a late flight and asked if there was a courtesy room where we could shower and change we were told to use the outdoor pool. This is the first 5 star hotel we have ever stayed in that has not offered a courtesy room and we have stayed in a lot of hotel worldwide. We were an adult group of 4 which had spent a lot of money to stay for a week here and when we were told this we were not impressed to say the least. The Barman Kyle was very nice and a very friendly chap as was the Scottish Spa Manageress sorry cant remember her name. We would return to this hotel for sure but would make sure we were going to be able to use a room to shower and change in if we had a late departing flight again. Collapse

We have just returned from this hotel as a family of 2 adults and 2 children (age 3 and 6) and had a lovely time. We were half board and either had breakfast and lunch or breakfast and dinner. We found the hotel prices for food and drink extremely reasonable and good quality. The main downside of this hotel is Breakfast is very very busy, we would go to breakfast for 9am and it was chaos! Queues for most food stations - I think the hotel really needs to re-think there breakfast layout as it seems dangerous the amount of people in such a small space. By 10am some food run out. The pool is also abit disappointing and small for the size of the hotel and it is also freezing! Our room was cleaned daily but not until about 5.30pm at night when we was getting ready for dinner so would have to all sit on the balcony while they cleaned. The room was huge and very modern, lovely to have so much space! We visited the cocktail bar one night with a fantastic Scottish Barman (I can't remember his name) who made great cocktails and it had live music (Wednesday and Saturday evenings). This is the only evening entertainment for hotel. You ideally need a car as there is minimal going on in terms of entertainment at the hotel so is good to explore the local area. We drove to Lagos (25 min drive) and spent a day on the beautiful beach there and also went for an evening to Vilamoura (45 min drive) and and evening in Albufeira (25 min drive). Staff very friendly (apart from the staff at the main pool bar who act like it's a hassle if you ask them for anything and lots of giggles and smirks when serving. Overall a lovely holiday and great value for money. Collapse

Stayed three nights here on a family break in Portugal. We had a standard suite and a larger family suite, the main difference being the larger and more equipped kitchen in the latter. Location: about 20 minutes up the road from the coast to Monchique, close to the Monchique spa. The location offers easy access to the coast but also great views and a mountain feel. The design of the hotel makes the most of this as it is set into the hotel on lots of levels. The design is very smart but it does make for lots of lift and stair use and the two rooms we had were 5 mins apart. Monchique itself is a pleasant small mountain town, there is a big supermarket on the left as you drive in. The hotel has an excellent and free double level car park. Rooms: excellent. Suites have an ok size bedroom, large living room with sofa bed and two bathrooms. The design is clean, new and smart. Bed comfort not the best but that aside the rooms are notably good. The wifi through the Tv is great. We made good use of our little kitchen to have lunch a couple of days. Food: again excellent. There are two restaurants included on half board, one Portuguese and the other pizza/pasta. Both offered generally good service and excellent food at night. Breakfast good quality but the buffet area is far too small and becomes a scrum. Pools: weak. Main pool is on a lovely terrace. Nice deck. Too few sun loungers and pool unheated. Some people like this but for me it is not on in this type of hotel. Smaller kids pool looks old and is in a corner near the road. Kids enjoyed it but also unheated. The hotel has its own spa but we didn't use this Overall nearly rated as average because of pools but boosted by rooms food and location. If you don't mind using a car then it would make a nice base to stay in the hills and go down to a different beach each day. Collapse

I read alot of the reviews before booking so was well aware of some of the small complaints Ie, coffee and tea not being replenished, rooms not being cleaned daily ect so my expectations were moderate. On checking in I was concerned how isolated the hotel was but it turned out just fine, we have children aged 2 & 6 and found the daily shuttle bus excellent, we visited Alvor & Praia Da Rocha which both have fantastic beaches. There are also a couple of very nice restaurants in Monchique which is 15 mins (10 Euro) in a taxi. Alvor which is around 30 Euro in a taxi if you wanted to spend the evening there. There isn't much to do on the complex but there are decent swimming pools including a children's pool . The staff were excellent, all very helpful. Our room was cleaned most days. Kitchen is basic enough but you can just about cope making nice dinners. Overall rooms were very good standard. We stayed self catering. My main negative is the prices charged by the hotel for food and drink. I'm perfectly happy to spend money on a top end meal but I found the prices were at least 30% higher than other top restaurants in the area, service was average and quality not as good. We also felt quite rushed. A can of Sprite was 3.50 which is 300% more expensive than other restaurants, the evening we arrived we got 2 sandwiches and a salad ordered to the room and the bill was nearly 50 Euro, the hotel shop is also priced unusually high. A kids variety pack of cereal charged at 7 Euro. I would return here but I would go self catering and wouldn't waste any money on food & drink in the restaurants. It also wouldn't stay half board as I wouldn't want to be tied to eating in the hotel every night. I do think the price of accommodation is good value so would recommend. More of a 4 star than 5.
