Unfortunately, the hotel had not received a confirmation of our booking so no room had been booked for us. They found us a room, an executive style (not standard) in the older part of the hotel. The only thing i think could make it executive was the size of the bathroom. It was a double room rather than a twin as requested but they never got the request and i was just thankful to get a room. The decor is traditional (old fashioned) and no double glazing. On the saturday night there was a wedding reception and the music was loud and clear in our room. I phoned reception at about 12.45 am to find out when it would end and the night porter thought about 1am. At 1.30 i phoned again and he assumed it had stopped, if it had, why would i be phoning? i went down to reception and spoke to the night porter and noticed the night manager (so i was told) heading off with some dry cleaning to deliver. Shame about me waiting to speak to someone in authority! the reception eventually finished about 2am. I want people to enjoy their wedding receptions but it was not fair to put us in a room nearby without warning us of possible noise. The wedding reception was in a separate building but the music could still be heard. The morning reception staff were very helpful. They put us in a room on the opposite side of the hotel for the following night, however, this time we could hear the traffic from the road running adjacent to the hotel. It was coming in loud and clear through the air vent in the bathroom! we did get a twin room this time with a small bathroom. The other worry was the receptionist on the night of arrival wanted us to pay for the weekend break when i knew we had already paid Superbreak. Luckily, the receptionist on our departure knew that superbreak take the payment in advance. On the positive side, the breakfasts were good and the lady on duty in the bar on the sunday night was extremely helpful with ordering some food for us even though it was not on the bar menu. The leek and potato soup was very tasty and the crumble was delicious. Collapse

Stayed here for a couple of nights for a recent business confernence, was pleased to be so warmly welcomed after a long drive sadly the room I was given was pretty much on the other side of the hotel which required me to walk through a multitude of corridors and up and down steps. Easier to go out of the hotel and walk around outside I soon found out. Was happy with the room, it had opening windows and was clean and tidy if a little worn however it was well maintained and the bed was very comfortable, WIFI however didn't reach my room... Eatery is where it all went wrong, on the second night 'we' all decided to eat at the hotel however after suggesting 12 of us were to get some grub we were told that they only had 3 staff in the kitchen and they couldn't feed us!!! Long and the short of it is we went into Standish which is a very small town and the only place we found to eat was a Hungry Horse! The breakfast was ok with plenty on offer and the huge conservatory was a lovely place to sit in as you wake up in the morning however the coffee was very poor. Not a place I would return to although parking was plentiful and free and my colleagues suggested the gym was very good. Watch out for the bird droppings if you park under the trees, they are lethal to paint! Collapse

I visited here on a spa day package with 2 friends. I didn't even know this place existed and was pleasantly surprised by what we found. Absolutely gorgeous building with lots of original features which is something I love. The spa was in a separate building next door which from the outside looked a little untidy due to painting that was going on but once you stepped inside...WOW. Absolutely gorgeous reception with complementary refreshments. The staff were lovely and very helpful, talking us through our package. The changing rooms were lovely and clean too.the swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna area was nice but did in places look abit tired and maybe needing a little tlc but again very clean and lovely and relaxing. Not massive in size but adequate all the same. The relaxation/treatment rooms was out of this world. Beautifully decorated, lovely relaxing music, again complimentary refreshments. I've never felt so relaxed and that was even before my deep tissue massage... I have no words to describe how amazing that was. The lady who gave me my massage was lovely and friendly and damn good at her job. Perfect massage. After our spa day we were shown to the hotel restaurant for cream tea. The restaurant was lovely and the view out to the lake was breathtaking. Our waitress was lovely. The scones were the best I've ever tasted as was the clotted cream. Coffee perfect. Glass of fizz perfect. Sandwiches perfect....I was totally stuffed by the end but thoroughly enjoyed everything I ate. Yes the food was pricey but only to be expected in such a place as this. Unfortunately I didn't get to see any bedrooms but from what I saw in the restaurant and the main hall with the gorgeous stairway I absolutely loved it. I would certainly return to this beautiful, quaint hotel. Collapse

Stayed at this hotel on April 26th. Most disgusting dinner in a long time. Cold steak and soggy chips. Uninterested waiting staff walking around eating on the go and ignoring tables that need clearing. Given this place offers wedding receptions - one to avoid. Hollow and insincere apologies at check-out the following morning with no offer of a discount or refund on the previous evenings awful meal. Shocking customer service indeed. Collapse
