We stayed in the Macdonald Hill Valley golf and spa hotel, near Chester. We enjoyed a blissfully quiet two nights with panoramic views across the golf course. Superb course, very tempting! We experienced outstanding food for both evening meal and breakfast within the hotel. During our stay we ventured out into Chester and beyond the Welsh border to take in the local national trust properties. Fantastic hotel in a beautiful location. Collapse

Enjoyed an excellent stay. The room was spacious, well appointed and had a lovely view of the golf course. The shower was a dream! staff throughout the hotel were friendly, attentive and efficient. The evening meal was excellent with some of the best steak we have had for a very long time. My only quibble would be the lack of vegetables or salad with it. But that is very minor and should not detract from the excellent cooking, high quality produce and superb service. Breakfast was equally good with an excellent range of choices. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Collapse

Overall a very nice stay at the hotel - on a spa overnight stay with dinner, bed and breakfast. The spa treatment was lovely - facial and back massage, a good gym and nice big pool. The main niggle was the evening meal where we were sat in a freezing cold conservatory, where the only heat came from 2 little storage heaters. when the main meal arrived, one was incorrect and had to changed. So by the time it was corrected I’d already eaten my meal. Not really any apologies, just give us a free drink to compensate but then the bill was all wrong and we had to query that. Lovely room overlooking the golf course, comfortable bed and great nights sleep. Breakfast was very good. Overall a nice stay but needs more staff in the restaurant. Collapse

We’re here at the moment and it’s a lovely hotel. The staff are wonderful and so kind. Very accommodating with our 15 month old making her random meals of mash and peas and such like! We are on our second night and both nights a quiet but quite piercing alarm has sounded at 8:30pm and at 2am (last night- hopefully not again tonight!) I’ve no idea what it is and it’s not woken the baby up but it did wake me last night. And I like my sleep so it’s a bit annoying! We also had a random fire alarm this morning about 9am... no notice in the rooms to say when they test the alarm and we weren’t notified by reception at check in when they test... was it real? No idea- but it only lasted a few minutes. Really loud though, worries me about hurting baby ears. Didn’t sleep well last night as a result... hoping to sleep well tonight. I might have another glass of wine (fridge in room for my white wine is a good perk!!) Collapse

Booked in for a one night spa break with dinner, bed and breakfast. See complaint email below: Hi We spoke this morning, when I made a complaint about our stay with you. I wanted to formalise the complaint and put it into writing. I have outlined the issues we experienced over the 24 hours with you: The shower door was broken and falling apart, as I showed you this morning. This meant that after a shower we had to dry the bathroom! > In the restaurant yesterday evening. We were seated next to a family with two young children, approximately 2 and 6 years old I would say. The little girl was screaming and crying, and at one point threw her meal all over the floor including down my wife's leg! We were offered to move seats discreetly, but as we were sat so close we felt uncomfortable moving, although people around us did. Not that moving would have made a huge difference to the ruined ambience. Now I understand that you can't be held responsible for the children of guests, but we felt there could be a policy of no children in the restaurant after 9pm, similar to other establishments. The bar area would have been more suited to a family that late in the evening. On another note the service wasn’t great, but this wasn’t through the lack of the staff trying. The staff were great, but rushed off their feet because there simply wasn’t enough of them. > We decided to have a nightcap before bed around 11.45pm - midnight. I called reception, but didn't get a reply. So I went downstairs to see the hotel in relative darkness, no one around and a phone on the desk with a number to call out of hours. I called no reply. I walked down to the restaurant, into the bar both in darkness and not a person in sight. I returned to reception and called again, after many rings the phone was finally answered. 5 mins later a staff member appeared, and off he went to get ice. He then came back 5 mins later, it was nothing he said, but I was made to feel like I had put him out somehow. This was a 25 minute task in the end! I find it weird that a fairly large 4 star hotel would have an unattended desk at midnight. > Around 12.30am (approx) I called room service to enquire if we could get a snack delivered, when I asked if room service was available I was told 'within reason'! After asking for a more specific explanation I was told we could get cold sandwiches only. So I ordered a coronation chicken sandwich, to be told there wasn’t any available. He then told me he wasn’t sure what they had as the handover hadn’t been done as it should. I suggested I call back and he could tell me. I called back and was told there was ham or egg mayo only. Again I was shocked at a 4 star hotel having a choice of only 2 cold sandwiches available on the room service menu. I ordered ham, and was then shocked at it taking nearly an hour to arrive! > We ordered breakfast to be served in our room at 9.30am as we were on a schedule. I had to chase this at 9.50, to be told it was on its way and had been delayed because of a broken lift. Not sure how that would affect it but that was what I was told. It eventually turned up lukewarm at 10am. The toast was missing, no sauces, salt pepper and no spoon for the cereal! > To then round it off we were unable to shower, wash, brush our teeth or use the toilet this morning due to the water issue. We were supposed to meet friends for lunch in Altrincham, on our way home, at 12.30pm today. We had to cancel this as we were unable to shower and get ready. As you saw I left in shorts and flip flops this morning with last night’s product on my hair! The maintenance guy advised we could use the golf changing rooms, but this wasn’t good enough, nor did we have the time especially after breakfast arriving 30 mins late. We are not one of those awful complaining couples, and in isolation I don’t feel any of the points above (apart from the water issue) would have led to a complaint, but it was just a comedy of errors in the end and all in less than 24 hours. For a hotel who charge £13.50 for a glass of Malbec, and £16 for a whisky and wine the service wasn't up to scratch, and certainly didn't meet our expectations vs other 4 star establishments. Whilst I was writing this, I received your reply – thank you. The offer of a night’s stay is kind and appreciated, but I’m afraid we won’t be visiting again. We travelled for a spa break as you can see from our package, but I wouldn’t travel to Whitchurch solely to spend another night at your hotel. My wife and I are both in agreement on this. I therefore feel that there would be no other alternative other than a refund please. I’ll look forward to receiving your response. Kind regards Rob Johnson I will say that Amanda attended our room straight away to listen to our complaint, was very apologetic and offered a fee nights stay with breakfast. When we advised we wouldn't be visiting again Amanda quickly issued a refund. This didn't make up for the ruined break, and messing up our plans the next day. The spa is good, but we returned from our treatments at 4pm to see the pool had been invaded by lots of splashing and excitable kids. There is also no jacuzzi (my fault as I should have checked), tiny sauna and steam room also surprised me. This hotel is tired, staff are overworked, service is poor and the prices are in line with a 4 star London hotel. We normally stay at The Vale Resort in Cardiff, had been told this was on a par. Really isn't on any level. Hope this is useful. Collapse

My husband and I have just returned from a 1 night spa break and cannot fault anything. Had a wonderful massage from Danni and after a long swim and sauna relaxed in our lovely room before dinner. It wasn't the best dinner in the world but the scallops were lovely. fish a little overcooked for my main meal but otherwise ok. Breakfast was lovely and really hit the spot and there was plenty to choose from with lots of fruit cereal and yoghurt before a full English and then another swim and sauna. left feeling energised and fresh and would definitely go back again. All the staff are very friendly and helpful and make you feel very welcome. Manager should be very proud and anyone that writes a rubbish review (and I have seen a few) must be very fussy or just like moaning lol Keep up the good work guys. Collapse
